Also known as an American Flamingo, the species is found across the West Indies, northern South America, and the Yucatan Peninsula. It is the only native species of flamingo found in the North America. The species is closely related to the Chilean and Greater Flamingo. In fact, it was once considered conspecific with the latter. This view has been considered incorrect due to a lack of evidence.
