Moody Gardens Penguin Encounter

I'm uploading this so people who are interested in doing the penguin encounter at Moody Gardens in Galveston, TX can get a better idea of what all it entails.
Please keep in mind that my experience was somewhat unique and so it will probably not be the same for everyone. I was "lucky" in that when I bought my ticket for the group penguin encounter, I was actually the only ticket sold for that time slot that day. So, instead of a group encounter I got more of a private tour.
In this case, I believe because I was an adult and I was calm (and because my biologist tour guide was awesome!), I got to meet more than one penguin as is the norm for these encounters. If you are in a group and there's a lot of loud kids in there with you I don't think they will usually bring in more than one. And also I think touching the penguins is also not guaranteed.
The king penguin at the end is actually the first penguin I met who, it turned out, was not interested in painting for me that day, so I got to meet Hendrix! He is a very charismatic penguin and he really enjoys doing these encounters and being with his towels! The penguins in this video are Rockhoppers, King and Gentoo penguins.
All in all, I would highly recommend experiencing this encounter if you're at all on the fence about it. It's very cute and the money all goes toward conservation.

But the penguin is not a wild penguin. In most cases, the only animals that trust us are those that depends on us for food.

I cannot stop watching the part at 2:13 to 2:26, he was REALLY excited and joyful when he got praises and compliments for his Artwork, he takes SO much Pride in it as well!!! He’s the most adorable creature in this Universe!!!

I love Hendrix. I met him when I did Sea Camp about an year ago. I got to keep the artwork. I wish when I did it I got to see all the penguins. But I was happy to meet him. Thank you so much for sharing this video. I wish I got a video when I did it.

Because their feet are all the way in the back as these animals are adapted to a life in the water, coming to land only to nest, to moult their feathers or to rest (*but only if they are extremely exhausted*).

*+Peter Jongsma* I think it's when you get to know an animal for so long you'll notice very subtle differences like a small patch of fur on the thigh sticking out more than the others. I wouldnt know though cause i've never been blessed with penguin company ^^

No you don't feed them. And, yes they let you touch them but I'm not sure if it's a guaranteed thing.

They're identification tags. Just like those that Canaries & pigeons have on their feet. Their purpose is to help with the identification of particular individuals as each one has a particular code of letters, numbers and colors that is UNIQUE to the bird that carries it and makes it easier for the keepers to know who is who, as it's usually just too hard to tell them apart in a large group. It's basically a Penguin's version of an Identity card.
