CARPET + UPHOLSTERY CLEANER RENTAL | DIY Sofa Cleaner | Affordable $40 Rug Refresh by Rug Doctor

We weren't really excited about the cleaning job the professional steam cleaners did (which wasn't cheap), so we decided to give the carpet + upholstery machine rental a try. Here's what we thought of the experience + the outcome. (Unsponsored, as usual.)
I'm definitely not a professional cleaner, so I always recommend following manufacturer instructions!

Just some words of advice for next time. You never wanna put soap in the machine. Instead dilute soap and water in a spray bottle or garden sprayer depending on how big the area that needs to be cleaned. Spray on surface and let it soak for 15 mins. Come back with the machine and just hot water and make a wet pass over the area. Then do a dry pass without water to extract as much water from the area.. turn on fans or ac to help with dry time. Do not open any windows or doors until carpet is clean :) great job tho!!

“Do not take cushion covers off or wash in washer machine”, but I take mine off and throw them in the washer and air dry them as the spin cycle takes out most of the water and doesn’t take long for all my cushion covers to dry. I enjoyed the video and so satisfying!

That's crazy how clean it got your carpet! I was just pricing replacing our carpet, but after seeing that, I will give the Rug Doctor a try. (Bought a used sofa that could use a good clean, too. Guess I'm going to get my workout!) Thanks!

I would buy my own machine so you can clean as often as you want and dont have to go and rent a machine and be crunched for time. Plus the cost of machine rentals and having a pro come out, you can get a great carpet cleaner and have it when you need it and also know who's dirt is going through it. With animals a carpet cleaner is a must have. I have the bissell proheat 2x revolution pet pro. It gives me the same results as that big guy. Just easier to move around and the formulas smell amazing.

Very good job done, I love how fast the stains came up, you carpet and upholstery looks like new Makes you feel that way too. Your car looked bran new again. You should watch one of those people Who clean a a care, that maybe only a year, but they have several kids, and boy the guy got a bucket Of French fries, candy gum, but they never cleaned up. They left the car until finally they took the car to be cleaned. (Wonder what it cost ) anyway it’s really interesting to watch, he make it look new again. I Like watching people take something that looks bad and makes it bran new. You did a fantastic job Everything was all new again, and you did it, yourself. Bless you. 👍👍👍

I would put an old bed sheet around the floors where you're cleaning so the drips and spray won't get on your floor.

I just cracked my windows overnight, and I'm 99% sure they were dry by morning. I've already trashed them again, so I'll have to do it again and note the drying time this time! 😂

Just buy a carpet extractor, you can get a decent spot machine for 300 to 600 bucks. It may sound like a lot, but you only spend the money once. By the way I own a cleaning company, if that means anything.

I rented one of those today from The Home Depot for $22 for 4 hours. I live in San Diego. I bought a 16 ounce bottle of detergent that you mix with 4 gallons of hot water for $5.99. I didn’t get an upholstery attachment, maybe that’s why it was less than the $40 you paid, or maybe you live in a higher demographic area.

@Faffy - Sorry for the late reply. I cleaned three areas that were about 3x3 feet or 3x2 feet. One by my front door, one in the middle of the living room, and one by the entrance to the kitchen. It took me quite a while. I probably spent about 30 minutes on each area, so about 90 minutes total. I went over the front door area literally 20 times. It worked pretty well but I really thought it was going to get cleaner much quicker. I guess if you clean the carpets regularly it’s easier to upkeep them. The areas i were cleaning were really dirty and hadn’t been cleaned in a while. I shouldn’t have let it go so long. Honestly they still need more cleaning but I only had the rental for 4 hours and had to return it.

Home Depot is listing that the cleaner is 44 lbs, so it's definitely not a cake walk to carry. I just let them air dry and they were dry within 24 hours -- no couch covers yet! Still haven't found any I like! :(
