Carpenters - The Rainbow Connection

Музыка

Recorded in 1981 for the "Made In America" album, this performance is a work lead by Karen. The song was recorded with just piano, bass and drums, and vocals by Karen to introduce the song for the other musicians and to familiarize them with Richard's arrangement. Had the song been completed and included on the album, other instruments would have been added such as strings and horns, and later, Karen would have come back to the studio and recorded a new vocal track. Karen recorded the song at Richard's request, but simply didn't like the song, and so the song was never completed..
Years later, after Karen's death, fans learned of the track and begged Richard to release it. In an interview, Richard stated, "If I ever released it, Karen would come down and get me!" But twenty years after Karen recorded "Rainbow Connection," Richard began work on the last Carpenters album, a Japanese CD entitled "As Time Goes By" released in 2001, and he decided to complete the song and include it on the CD.
To put this song into historical context, it was recorded a year after Karen completed her solo album, an album which she decided to shelve at the urging of A&M. She then returned to the studio to begin recording what turned out to be her last Carpenters album, "Made In America."
Her solo album has been described as her effort to change her image by breaking away from traditional Carpenters songs and recording songs with more risque lyrics in a higher tone of voice. She may have viewed "Rainbow Connection" which had been introduced by Kermit the Frog in "The Muppet Movie," as a step back toward the type of song she was trying to break away from. But she obliged Richard by laying down a vocal track, but ultimately, she didn't like the song enough to pursue it any further. But her vocals, however "begrudgingly" they were recorded, are nearly perfect, and show her extreme professionalism towards her craft.
Most Carpenter fans like "Rainbow Connection," but are divided on two aspects of the song: the toy piano and the "angel" voices in the chorus. I like the song just the way it is and it's among one of my favorite Carpenter recordings. Of all the videos I've created using Carpenters songs, this is the first one that made me cry when I viewed it for the first time after its completion. There's something about it that makes me miss her all the more - I'd like to think that she's happy wherever she is and that she's finally found her rainbow connection.

It's 2018, and I am 31. As an immigrant from China, I grew up listening to her songs as a way to study English. After living in the US for 12 years, I still find Karen as one of my all-time favorite singers. She has such ease in her powerful and beautiful voice that penetrates the soft spots of your soul and heals all your sorrow. She might be way before my time, but great music can touch people through time and across continents. R.I.P. Karen

My Dad loved Karen Carpenter and when we lost him earlier this month, this was the song that came on in his final moments of life. He couldn’t speak those last couple weeks and I think that this was his way of telling us that he was going to be okay. People always say things happen for a reason and I know that there’s a reason this song came on. It gives me so much comfort. Rest in peace, Daddy. I know that you found it.

The winter before my favorite cat died I used to rock him, whenever he was restless, and sing this song to him. The notes of the Rainbow Connection are now filled with memories of his purring and clinging to me and looking up at me with his big green eyes, as though I was making something better. Maybe it's sappy. Unless we find the Rainbow connection in our love for each other. Be it for a pet or a human being.

Fun Fact: I worked with a young child who we’ll call “E.” He was diagnosed with autism. I was an ABA Technician and was trained to help him express himself in ways “we” would understand. He loved to play in the sand. He LOVED the water and so did I. He NEVER listened to me unless we were doing something of the sort. I discovered he LOVED The Carpenters. Explicitly “the rainbows song 🌈.” We listened to it RELENTLESSLY mostly because he loved it, but mainly because I loved to sing it to him (I can sing WELL). We connected tremendously and I believe it was due to this song. I’ll never forget “E.” 🌈💜

The Rainbow Connection Carpenters Why are there so many songs about rainbows and what's on the other side? Rainbows are visions, but only illusions, and rainbows have nothing to hide So we've been told and some choose to believe it I know they're wrong wait and see Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection The lovers, the dreamers and me Who said that wishes would be heard and answered when wished on the morningstar? Someone thought of that and someone believed it Look what it's done so far What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing and what do we think we might see? Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection The lovers, the dreamers and me All of us under its spell We know that it's probably magic Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices? I've heard them calling my name Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors The voice might be one and the same I've heard it too many times to ignore it It's something that I'm supposed to be Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection, the lovers, the dreamers and me Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection, the lovers, the dreamers and me

This was recorded at a time when I knew The Carpenters who were customers of mine at Paramount Camera, in Downey. I was there when Rainbow Connection and Those Good Old Dreams were recorded - for Made in America. (Karen invited me to the studio.) I remember that she HATED Rainbow Connection as it was "Another Sesame Street" song and she wanted to be known for more sophisticated music. However "Sing" was a huge hit for The Carpenters and it also came from Sesame Street. It wasn't until years later that I heard Rainbow Connection on a compilation CD and thought, "Karen is going to have God strike Richard dead!" Even though Rainbow Connection is a childish song, her professionalism stands out - as it does with everything she recorded! We all miss Karen!

As John Bettis, who co-wrote 38 of the Carpenter's songs, said, when he heard her sing for the first time when she was 16. "She had that God given voice, without working at it, the first time she sang. It was a voice the touched your soul."

I love the Carpenter's version of this song. I first heard it on their Carpenters Gold album. Karen's voice is perfect in this song. I knew it was originally unreleased and was finally released by Richard years after Karen died, but didn't know it was a first cut vocal track and not a final recording. Her voice sounds perfect just the way it is. Sorry to hear that Karen didn't like this song, but the song makes this Carpenters fan very happy. The Carpenters also had another hit with a song first sung by the Muppets. The song "Sing" was written for Sesame Street and was originally sung by the Muppets on that show in 1971. The Carpenters recorded and had a hit with it 2 years later.
