"Sing" was originally written in 1971 for the children's telly programme Sesame Street. The song gained mainstream popularity when recorded by The Carpenters, who relieved Big Bird'of his duty and took it to the top of the US adult contemporary chart.

Karen quoted that Sing was a fun and easy song to sing. She said that she loved performing the song because she loved seeing the children's facial expressions. A beautiful woman with true class.🌹

I was in jr high when this came out and our music director was in love with the album and had us do a whole spring program with the music from it.

There's another version of this, with video, that they did in Japan in front of a live audience. You're right she was often not the happiest person, but she's singing *in Japanese* with a bunch of Japanese schoolchildren in the background providing the chorus, and her face lights up like a Christmas tree. It's the same song, but in Japanese and really cool.

in japan the carpenters released a live album and in concert she sang this song in japanese. and had a childrens choir on stage with them/ they did this also in other countries with local children singing with them

It's a Sesame Street song by Joe Raposo, who also wrote "Being Green" (Kermit) and "C is for Cookie".

You probably heard the song on Sesame Street. The first time I heard this song on the radio, I was on my way to my girlfriend's house. When the kids started singing la, la, la, la, I started singing with them. I ended up passing my girlfriend's house, as I kept singing la, la, la, with the kid singers. Yeah, it made me forget where I was headed. To this day, 45 years later, I still sing the la, la, la, la when I hear this song.

Thanks for this - your reactions are priceless. Personal note - The Carpenters came to my small town of New Castle, IN in 1974 (I believe) and performed at the high school fieldhouse. My first concert ever, and they had notified choir teachers around the county ahead of time to have about two dozen local children rehearse this song so they could sing along, onstage, with Karen. I didn't get chosen but one of my best friends did. What a thrill for that small midwestern town. I've always believed Karen had the most beautiful voice in popular music, so thank you for the ride down Memory Lane.

From Sesame Street they did a version of the Rainbow Connection

In their live concerts, the local elementary choir kids got to be onstage and sing it with them....you never knew what might happen, but all the ones I saw sang it with no mistakes. Was such fun and Karen seemed to enjoy those kids so much.

Broke me this one did, the only song my father ever sang to me as a small child.

When they toured across the US & overseas they reached out to local communities & had their local children’s choir go on stage to sing that part. They were amazing!

When they performed this song on their 1974 tour they brought out a local children's chorus to perform with them. It was great to hear live.

This is one of my favorites for the same reason. This is often forgotten or overlooked.

I was driving to my girlfriend's house to pick her up for a date, when this song came on the radio. When the kids started signing la, la, la..... You asked whether Karen was the drummer on all their songs. When they first started out Karen was the only drummer for the group. As they got more popular Richard started worrying about the fact that Karen at 5'4 literally disappeared behind the drum kit. Karen saw herself as a drummer not a singer. But finally Richard convinced her that at least on the ballads which were the slow sad songs that they got most recognition for she would come out front and sing. Also Karen's drumming style was perfected in front of live audiences which is a louder type of drumming then you would use in the studio. She was a great studio drummer but on a lot of the master recordings that you're playing the drummer was a really really legendary guy named Hal Blaine. And often they would both play. There is a clip on KZread- several of them as a matter of fact look up Karen Carpenter drummer. Richard wrote a song about the early days in their childhood when he was experimenting around with overdubbing on a tape recorder and this is when he was maybe seven or eight years old, and Karen wanted to do something and it turns out that she wanted to drum so the parents bought her a drum set. And Richard wrote a whole song about that. But in this video that's on KZread it shows Karen running back and forth between all these different types of drum and percussion instruments cause she could also play the glockenspiel and bass and other instruments. As great a singer as she was she was not just a singer. And about "Sing", one cool thing about this song is that they always performed it in their live concerts and in every town that they played they would make arrangements beforehand to find a local children's choir and they would bring them in have them backstage and then when it came time to perform sing they would bring them out. That had to be a thrill for a bunch of kids.

One of the children's voices in the choir is actually Karen. She sang a guide vocal in a high voice so that when the kids came in to record their part, they could sing along with Karen's voice. You used to be able to hear Karen's isolated vocal without music here on YT, but it seems to have been removed.

Another nice reaction DayOne. Here are a few not-so-well-known Carpenters' jewels for you to try. They're all somewhere here on YT, at least on audio: 'One Love', 'A Place to Hide Away', and 'Crescent Noon'. There are other favourites, but the last mentioned is a true tour-de-force. If I were asked to choose the best intro to the blessed miracle that was Karen's voice, this is the one I would choose.

We were meant for joy, love, happiness, but we were also made to learn how to be more patient, loving, and caring, for it's hard for us. Songs like this, and singers like Karen are the great reminders of our eternal purpose: la la la la la, la la la la, la la la, la la la la la la love

Gratz on 3k! I always think of my mom now when I hear this song. The Carpenters were about as close as she got to listening to contemporary music back then. She enjoyed singing a lot, especially at church, and when she passed away several years ago, I put together some of her favorite songs to play after the memorial service, starting with this one. "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" is a popular Billy Joel song, and I remember you saying you like the saxophone so when you get around to checking that one out, look for the one from his 2008 concert at Shea Stadium. You might also like David Sanborn if you aren't familiar with him yet, "Maputo" is a good song to start with.
