I was flying that night from Nantucket to Islip Airport on Long Island. I was heading west and they were heading east we passed each other around Orient Point on the eastern tip of Long Island. It was a very Dark Night. A very high overcast so we could not see any stars or the moon. The visibility was very good. I saw the lights of Rhode Island and Connecticut. The visibility had to have been at least 30 miles. I landed at Islip and drove home. In the morning I was watching TV and saw this story on the news. I was STUNNED and I told my wife what happened the night before and she couldn't care less. We are no longer married. That night still bothers me today. I also still remember the day his father died and could show you exactly where I was sitting on the Gym Floor when the announcement was made that the President was killed. I'm now a 71yo Veteran and retired pilot and I can't remember what I did last week but I will remember those events until I die.

Thank you for mentioning the visibility. I have never bought what the press has said about the reason for their crash. I'll never forget when the news broke that their plane was missing and people on the ground were being interviewed and they said it was CLEAR that night and one said he saw an explosion over the ocean. Then....I never heard from them again. They were silenced. Now, you see satellite data on the internet (which wasn't available at that time) and it clearly shows the visibility was very good on that night (just as you said). We may never really be told the "truth" in our lifetime but what a memory and experience for you.

I too remember where I was when I heard that JFK was assassinated - age 18. I spent 6 mos working before going to college. I had gone out to lunch, but instead of going to eat, sat in a Catholic Church quiet and somewhat meditative. Then I realized to pick up something and walk back to work. When I walked in - I heard that JFK was dead. Don't remember saying or doing anything. The rest is a blur. I had a date than evening but cancelled - I see myself sitting on the stairs over looking the living room, watching the tv. Again - all I remember is watching tv. about everything that went on. To this day, when I see anything on about the assassination of JFK I tear up or cry.

John was not qualified, nor experienced to operate his aircraft under instrument rules in the conditions he was flying in. He was basically still at a student level with his flying skills. He was known to engage in risky behaviors without forethought and poor impulse control.

The strange twist of fate is that Lauren came into this world with a twin sister and left this world with her other.

I saw a video with guests comments of their wedding. She was over two hours late to her wedding and left the guests waiting in a tiny church with no air conditioning. When she showed up she had a flimsy excuse stating she couldn’t quite get into her wedding dress. I think she was having second thoughts. I think if they did not meet a tragic end they would have divorced and if Jackie was alive l do not think she would have approved of the marriage. May they rest in peace along with her sister who was killed as well.

I agree … she wanted the name, the fame and the money. I don’t think from reports stated that Caroline Kennedy approved of her mainly because of the drug use. The Kennedys are doers while Carolyn quit her position at CK and hid out in their condo. She made a nemesis of the press and public with all those miserable, scowling random photos. She was no innocent ingenue and having lived with John prior to the wedding, she was well aware of his public popularity. Her mother was not in favour of the match as she apparently said the night before the wedding. I think that had they lived, they would have divorced years ago and she would be only a footnote in his life. Instead she is now an icon because she married well and died young.🤔

I think ANYBODY marrying jFK Jr. would have faced a tremendous amount of challenges. No matter who they were. Along with all the good things, so many speculating, judging, rumours.

Reading what really happened to John and his losing control of the plane was his programming the wrong frequency for his approach to the runway. That mistake caused him to become disoriented and to eventually crash the plane. Tragic but not uncommon as disorientation is high in the number of mishaps that occur in General Aviation. Tragic to lose John and these two sisters. The poor parents ! It's a good thing, Jackie was already dead. That would have finished her off.

apparently there was a pilot who offered warning about the haze. but was rebuffed. Also, John could have flown north of Long Island sound and followed the coastline which would have avoided going over open sea between Long Island and Cape Cod. John also had a sore leg. The plane was controlled by foot pedals.

I'm afraid to fly especially at night to be totally honest. Landing scares me. Sometimes landings can be pretty rough. I can't imagine the terror they went through. I just pray it was over very fast. Poor souls.

From all accounts, but in particular the poignant memoir of her boyfriend prior to JFK, Jr., Michael Bergin, Carolyn NEVER should have married JFK., Jr. I'm not saying she didn't love John, but her temperament just wasn't suited for the life that he led and would continue to lead. From what Bergin describes in his book, Carolyn was a dominant personality, someone who needed to be "in charge" of a relationship, and she would have done much better if she'd married the private citizen Bergin, as he wanted her to. If one is to believe Bergin, Carolyn actually asked him on several occasions to "rescue" her from her marriage and its glaring spotlight, but that he wasn't willing to be the "spoke" that broke Carolyn's marriage to John. Many have speculated that, had they NOT died, John and Carolyn would have divorced . . . and I'd say that's a safe bet. Like Michael, John was also tiring of Carolyn's incessant need to be the one pulling strings and calling the shots.

It's hard to see what JFK Jr saw in Carolyn Bessette, she presents as emotionally cold and lacking in charm. But I feel it's no coincidence he was drawn to a cool, masculine type like his late mother Jackie. That's the only small comfort to be had from these tragic deaths - John's mother did not live to see it. After losing his father in Dallas that horrific day, I doubt she would ever have come to terms with the even more premature death of her beloved only son. So many aspects of the plane crash are reckless and troubling, it's almost as though he had a death wish. But he had no right to risk the lives of those two young women.

Esp. since she had known what it was like to be married to a celebrity - JFK - and asking her son to keep that in mind - some people handle it well others do not. (Since his wife - always looked uptight - I don't think she handled it well.) However, even before they were married - it didn't seem like Carolyn processed the kind of media attention she would be getting. Actually John always looked at ease with the attention. I remember when he failed his bar exam and the front page of a newspaper (maybe the Daily News) had in very big letters: THE HUNK FLUNKED. Carolyn just never seemed like she really wanted to be his wife. She never seemed likeable. She was frequently pictured looking angry and smoking a cigarette in her own world. John’s flight instructor reported that the plane John flew had a SINGLE button that would’ve flown automatically, but John apparently didn’t know about this, because he hadn’t completed all his flying lessons. The accident was totally avoidable! No wonder the mother sued John’s estate. All this fawning over a guy who has done nothing to merit any of the adoration heaped on him - except to be born to rich & politically famous parents, and to luck out in the gene pool and received his mom’s good looks. Failed the bar 2x, can’t even fly responsibly.

No, he was not inexperienced during daylight; they are saying Lauren Bessette was 2 hours late to the airport and that is why they left almost at night time, after 7 pm or around there; he would have made it just fine during daylight had they left at 5:30 pm. The crash took place very close to Martha's vineyard; he almost made it there, but it was totally dark with no light on ground being seen yet.

IF Jackie was alive she never would have approved of their marriage. That marriage never would have taken place especially after that huge fight out in the Park where it made Inside Edition TV. Carolyn called John a Bas-ard & hit him. No mother would like a girl who would do something like that to their son especially making it onto tv showing the whole fight. Jackie was a private person & over protective with her only son being a mom I don't blame her. Also IF Jackie was still alive John would have never returned to flying which he promised his mother he would stop & he did until she died.

Before John married, my pretty younger sister had a chance convo with him at a Martha's Vineyard bar one evening, not realizing who he was at first. He was dressed very casually, was alone & chatted with her while standing at the edge of the bar next to where she sat. Seemingly he had stepped in for just a quick beer before heading out, but politely introduced himself as 'John' when it hit her who this handsome, unassuming fellow was. Unexpectedly he paid for her drink just before he exited. She was gobsmacked for years over that chance encounter! A friend of mine from Greenwich, CT, knew of Carolyn Bessette from a distance & said she was gorgeous IIRL---the most beautiful girl at the school who was popular & known to be kind. And yet these two striking humans may have been mismatched, but we'll never know how their marriage would've played out... IDK why they didnt choose to take a town car that night instead of that fateful plane ride, even if they were running late...

She really changed in appearance

I always thought that John could have done so much better in picking a wife. A blessing they had no children. John was not not an experienced pilot and should not have been flying at night or in bad weather. And the two women were late, which made it a night flight. Had those two ladies not been late, all three might be alive today. Assuming the ladies knew his limitations on flying, they made a choice, which tells me that no one in that plane was very intelligent.

His mother is to be blamed for his poor character and of course his limited critical thinking, which was just bad genetics. However whatever he lacked in intellect he made up many folds in appearance and charm. He was very handsome and had the right surname.

She wasn’t adopted. Her parents broke up when she was young. Allegedly her mother wanted a more affluent life. She marries a rich surgeon from Greenwich CT. and they move there. Supposedly the girls real dad wasn’t in the picture much afterwards. Later on after Bessette died a reporter tracked down her real dad (who owned a hardware store in white plains) to ask about her and he was very angry and wouldn’t talk about them. He also said he hadn’t seen them in a long time. I always got the impression her mother ousted him so she can hook up with the wealthy and socially connected Doctor from Greenwich.

It was a article written about her they interviewed the ex boy friend it came directly from his mouth if she was nasty enough to beat on JFK Jr in public in a park then i have little doubt that she was out of control

I heard she was very kind and generous with a good sense of humour. John Jr. dated plenty of women and could have chosen anyone but he chose Carolyn. She was wise to quit her job at CK given her fishbowl life with John, and if she had bern allowed time, would have eventually found her niche. I don't think people remember how incredibly intense the media scrutiny was on this couple. I absolutely believe they were murdered because of John's intention to run for NY Senate. Eye witnesses report on seeing an explosion that evening and were silenced, and I'm not convinced he didnt have a flight instructor with him as he always flew with one. Many controlled events and tragedies in history have been covered up and I believe this is one of them. I believe Carolyn sensed danger to her life on some level ahead of time, and hence, was deeply conflicted. That doesn't mean they didn't love each other.

Sad that the three died so very young. It seemed as though the marriage was pretty much doomed from the beginning due to the lack of privacy and her inability to tolerate cameras and the news media always on their tails. Many people thought her beautiful but I was not a fan of her stark look.

i thought it was a great dress for a long, lean figure like hers. she liked to keep clothing simple and pared down, no jewelery or much makeup except a bold lip color. i liked her style, the less is more thing. her beautiful mane of hair and the color was striking also.

I don't think their marriage would've survived. She was not ready for life in the spotlight.

I never really believed she was in love with JFK jr. She may have been an individual incapable of loving someone.

When JFK Jr died, I felt such sadness and grief. It was such a tremendous loss. He was a great man and offered so much to the future of helping our country in the he political realm. Jackie raised an awesome young man. He was great in Journalism also. Felt the same for Princess Diana, so very sad both died so young. Some day we will know why they died so young.

She is right near the top of the list of the type of woman that I cannot get. She has an exclusive look, and it would be absurd if she was ever with a normal looking person. She has that unattainable look. Similar to Rosie Huntington Whitely.

I trink Brooke Shields was a better Match for John...I never liked Carolyn...she was not pretty and didn't like all the attention she was getting so why was she with John when she didn't like the life in the spotlight?????

They argued that morning she was twoing and foeing about going 2hrs late to airport...John had told best friend her drug use was causing the abusive outburst from Caroline...And suspected she wasnt faithful as she often accused John of this but could prove is wasnt fooling around but couldn't dismiss her unaccountably...there story is complicated and was destined to end sadly in tragedy...

There are tons of videos and photos and interviews with people who knew her and she seems to have a toxic character, she was very choleric and arrogant and all he wanted was to be loved and have a companion in life and a family. But he could never make her happy! I will never understand what he saw in her!
