Caroline Myss - The Martyr (The Power of Archetypes)

Hi, everybody,
This week I'm doing the martyr archetype. I've encountered this archetype in numerous people who tell me that they have the martyr.
Oftentimes people with the martyr archetype find themselves in circumstances where they do a lot for family members or do a lot for the people within their group, and they seek acknowledgement for what they're doing. But it's just never provided. Often because the person from whom they're looking for that acknowledgement is incapable of giving it.
For this discussion, I thought it'd be a good time to present a template through which you can look at all archetypal patterns. It may just help to understand even more how power progresses through us, and how an archetypal pattern manifests through us.
Thank you everybody, I hope you enjoy this discussion on the martyr archetype. I'll see you next week.
Love,
Caroline

Wow because of acceptance your hard path becomes your energy path and changes the atmosphere and the suffering is lessened, wow

I was at the job level for a long time and it was a big struggle for many reasons. When I finally accepted my circumstances, even though I yearned for change, things started to move. It took me 2 years, but I'm now a director in a position I love (very science meets community) and I feel like I have purpose now! I know this archetype well. Thank you for your videos!

This is SO profound and so relevant! When I stopped needing acknowledgement from outside myself and started acting on what resonated with me internally, my whole experience started to change. I also had to learn to allow others to help and support me - to stop framing offers of help as somehow weakening me, and starting to trust the process in moments when I was feeling vulnerable. I learned that the Universe always supports me when I let go and allow the process to unfold - help is always there if I am willing to allow it. In fact, I had the most heart-warming experience of people actually thanking me for asking and allowing them to help me, just because I was willing to ask (I actually had to be right up against the wall to learn that lesson - I found myself with $24, no work and a young child to care for, so I HAD to do something!!).

@@miracle-pi5ws Sorry to hear that. And not everyone is aware enough or in a place to be able to realise it. But that was indeed my experience, and in that case, probably because when I asked her for help, I also offered to help her, as an exchange. In the end, we exchanged our skills to help each other, and no money was required to change hands.

When I left the community college I attended I was living at home. I didn't announce to my Mom I wasn't returning. I just didn't go back. When my Mom noticed this she made her feelings about very clear about seeing home doing nothing. I HAD to go get a job. She wasn't about to tolerate this behavior. So I did through a family friend. I worked for 41yrs and over those years I had problems with authority figures. I did not like being told what to do. A lot of resentment built up over those years and @ 70 I'm still diffusing the anger. But you have given me clarity into my personality. Thank you I found a huge part of myself in this class

Thank you for this video. ❤ I know I have a strong martyr archetype within me, I have been observing it and studying it within myself for years. Even though I intuitively got to a lot of the insights you talked about in this video (it’s like you narrated my aha moments over the years), I am really grateful to hear you talk about it and to have a resource to come back to and revisit when those martyr tendencies come up again in new ways. To hear and be reminded that no I don’t want to be disempowered no matter how tempting and familiar it can be when I feel like I’m running out of endurance.

Thank you, Caroline. I love your Archetype series. They are so thought provoking. I am wondering how the Martyr archetype will evolve over time. So many cultures & societies have reinforced this archetype in negative (as well as positive ways). I am thinking of the many nurses who are fed up with working in the health care system who are leaving it & proclaiming that they are understandably fed up with the obvious lack of support. Some or many may have been playing out the martyr archetype. Being fed up with the imbalances within the broken health care system, patriarchal top heavy imbalances & distortions may push, press, challenge & evolve this situation to another expression & manifestation of the role of service, nursing & much more.

Wow, this is my dad. He constantly insists on helping us and then complains about it. We walk on eggshells around him trying to thank him for all he’s done but he drains us by complaining. It’s confusing to know what to do as a child but I have come to realize there is nothing I can do. Tupac Shakur also fits this archetype perfectly. He insisted on identifying with the pain of black people in the US. His parents were apart of the black panther party so he was primed ready for his destiny. Fascinating 🙏🏽

Was Jesus a Martyr at the "calling" level? He was God's only begotten son, who was called to die for us...I know, I really reached out on that one. It's where my brain went to. Thanks for the insight Lost my home in flood and had to fight for our community buybacks for our destroyed homes.. So thanks for the clarity of having to do something I had no choice in but to do the right thing. The first government targeted me seeking financial remedy for us and their systemic corporation they set up victimises and abuses us to not pay. It’s a year and a half later a senate inquiry and now they seek to grossly underpay. The first political party set up the group with 1/5 the resource needed and 1/4the the money needed intentionally to financially sanction us as we vote differently than their party. The gov has since changed but the corporation the last party set up has a nasty culture to aviod deny gaslight and hinder obstruct their function and senate urgent directions to pay. We have been denied a voice on the oversight and 90% of the disaster money goes to developers and the last gov mates away from the victims/ survivors. I am still trying to get the money to buy a new home but they make us feel powerless to disable our right to the money promised they don’t deliver ethically. The group uses vertical violence and has a dishonest hostile unaccountable non transparent architecture

the martyr doesn't want others to have the choices she passed on to gain access to her guided cage of acceptance for a lifetime. She pulls her children in for a lifetime. She is the reputation savage at the workplace of the other woman, for she is not dependent on her self for her soc. sec., ins, or rent. Other women are a competition. to her.
