Cod liver straight out of the can will surprise you, it's not fishy. The same way people would expect salmon sashimi to be fishy, but it isn't.

For some reason I just can't eat more than a few small bites of it. It's just so intense and oily by itself, but when mixed with the sardines and other ingedients to mellow it out it goes down much easier.

I basically just do this like I do tuna. Codliver and sardines go blended, then mix in chopped pickles/relish, generous pepper to taste, chopped boiled egg and smoked paprika and maybe some mustard. I'm not a total carnivore so I scoop it with celery. The sardines are usually fairly salty so I don't add any extra salt.

I added my cod liver to my egg salad, it was yummy. But when i ate it straight out of the can, my firat thought was that it reminded me of pate. Maybe mildly fishy pate, but good pate!

Hi! I wanted to share a recipe of something I have been makin'. I'm on an OMAD and STRICTLY carnivore with Monday all day fasting! It's a 3 day - "fish casserole" kind of creation. Consists of a can of Albacore tuna in spring water, a can of sardines - wild caught in water and a vacuum packed large piece of wild caught alaskan salmon (coho or sockeye) from Trader Joes, all cooked on my outside covered grille. I put the salmon on a foil boat out on the covered grille and while its cookin', I make a foil boat platter with about 20" of foil, folded long way in1/2 and then cup up the outer edge (about an inch) to make a boat. Then scoup in the tuna (after draining water) and the anchovies -drained- and break up it all and stir it up. After the salmon cooks (about 15 minutes) I scoup it into the mixture and break it all up and stir it in. Then I scoup it all into the foil boat and flatten it out and put a couple scoups of beef tallow (fat) on top for oil. Then back in to the grille for about 10 -15 more minutes. But I also make about 6 local free range raw eggs whipped in a bowl and pour it on top and kind of stir it in. In 10 minutes I have a 3 day casserole that I divide in three and last me for 3 meals (days)! It only comes to about $5 per day to eat! It's awesome!!

The reason I am here is to find a way to make cod livers edible. I'm not looking for a pure carnivore diet, just thinking since I like sardines, anchovies, oysters, mussels, clams I might be able to work in cod liver - it is such a power house addition to what we consume, I gotta give it a try. The egg salad type of recipe I saw elsewhere looks like a good prospect but I will trying this one too.

  • @ColinStuckert

Gabriel, i would always opt for cod liver whole primarily since it's unlikely to have been heated. Then a cold process cod liver oil would be next option. Both good

It almost seems that our body recognizes nutrient dense foods and wouldn't consume too much of it at a time. I love cod liver but after a can, I feel so incredibly satiated that I can not eat any more of it. I think part of the reason is because of the fat content as they come in its own oil. With beef liver I can eat more( since it's leaner) but definitely not as much as muscle meats like steaks. Our body is pretty good at not poisoning itself. Most Vitamin A overdose is associated with supplements or if you eat some arctic mammal's livers which has concentrated vitamin A. One thing that I like to point out though is that the more palatable we make our foods, the more we can eat it. I can eat way more liver pate than liver in it's original form. So I would try sticking to eating liver in its original form as much as possible and I would think it's generally safe to consume however much you desire.

I know this is an old question but yes, you can eat too much liver. With cod liver, limit your consumption to one can or so a week. Vitamin A is fat soluble and can accumulate to toxic levels in your body.
