Carly Rae Jepsen on embracing loneliness, joining a dating app & her relationship with Call Me Maybe
Ойын-сауық
Carly Rae Jepsen may be a huge pop star, but like many of us, she spent a lot of time alone over the last couple years - and she’s the first to admit that it wasn’t always easy. She was separated from her family, mourning the death of someone close to her and dealing with the fear a lot of us felt during the pandemic. But on the flipside of all that, she used that time to explore and reflect on what it means to be lonely. Through that exploration she created her latest album, The Loneliest Time. Jepsen sat down with Tom Power to tell us more about it.

This interviewer is so damn skilled. Guiding the conversation without interrupting her, I feel like he truly let her be herself and feel good about her work.

Carly Rae Jepsen is for the people
She's incredibly underrated. I always felt that she sounds like what Taylor only dreams of sounding like on her pop albums. Emotion, Dedicated and The Loneliest Time are all modern classics. The latter suffered the ill-luck of being released the same day as Midnights but I genuinely think that The Loneliest Time is the best pop album I've heard this year.

Never understood the point of pitting other artists against each other...they all have their unique sounds and strenghts🤷♂️

@@andrespalacios1909 Let's put it this way. I love both artists for different reasons, but when I see them in a similar genre, I find Carly's music far better and often addictive. Taylor's still incredible on albums like Folklore though. Can't imagine Carly pulling something like that off. But I could be wrong!
This album completely changed my creative workflow. Questioning if the content being made is “for yourself”, or “for others”, is an absolute game changer. Channeling from the heart of self, and getting out of the way. This is meaningful life lessons.
Her explaining the “Du du du du” in Bends to disassociate makes sense now and kinda wild😢
On repeat since came out. She topped herself in quality, this is hands down her best album.
She is so freaking humble for how talented she is.
Her whole insight about connecting with others through song, and not just thinking of herself or her own experiences in writing... Gosh I love her humility! Rarely do we encounter an artist who INTENDS to relate to her audience and includes them in her music. I've always thought CRJ's music has this timeless universality to them, that her persona/voice takes a step back and just beckons you to join and sing along - that you may be even more important than her being just confessional. Relatability in music is not a weakness.
Painfully underrated artist. I love the point about being an album artist and not a single artist. I can play one of her albums from beginning to end and enjoy every song.
Never minded her music but somehow landed on this video and she’s more philosophical than I expected. Cool.
The albums SO DAMN GOOD
Carly is truly the definition of pop music🌈
she seems like the sweetest person in the world.
This album is about to become my personality for a whole year.
She is a true pop genius and just seems like the most genuine person! This album is so special - thank you Carly!
She seems really lovely.
Absolute banger of an album. Been a Carly fan for a long time and this album hits so many different emotions for me. It's just so damn good. 👍

The whole album it’s amazing! My favorites bens, surrender my heart, no thinking over the weekend, sideways, go find yourself or whatever I just love her so much!
always know there's something more to her. just to hear her talk so openly about being lonely. oh how i couldn't relate more to her songs than i already do. admire this woman so much
She's such a lovely person. I love that she is so deliberate with the songs that she does release and does her listening circles and see what connects. Those extra steps make all the difference. And she's just freaking adorable! When she was talking about her songs and she asks "is that for me?" Lol so cute
I love this woman sm. SUCH a treasure of an artist
So earthy, grounded, humble and articulate. Refreshing!
She's the closest to an actual smart person making music which isn't just about hating men or plain depression and hopelessness, it's nice
Finally had the chance to listen to the entire album today from beginning to end. Another stellar record from Carly. She's such an underrated artist. I hope this album gets the proper visibility, attention, and popularity it deserves.
Carly is so humble and genuine. Not having the big popstar ego. ❤
This lady just keeps putting out incredible, fresh, thoughtful, emotion-full music.. This album is growing on me with every listen. Thank you Carly for doing what you doing!
It's so cool to hear her explaining her creation process and the amount of steps she goes through to realease an album - from thinking of a song, writing it down, playing it to people to see if it meets her criteria of "relatable"... it's so amazing how dedicated she is, and IMO it really pays off, cause she never miss 💙 every song is a blast!
I love that each album has its own vibe and feels different, yet they are all undeniably a CRJ album.
Call Me Maybe, gem from the past, evokes a great era.
Just saw her at Glastonbury UK. What a joyful, happy & uplifting experience. A truly beautiful lady spreading happiness to sad old Brits.❤️❤️❤️
Unfathomable that she was lonely! She is so beautiful and she sings & performs so well!
She is such a wonderful artist 💛
We need MORE of this in our world. Such a beautiful human being and an awesome album. Wishing you nothing but the absolute best in the future!!
I hope Carly finds someone she can grow old with. She seems like such a genuinely nice person!

She's got boyfriend y'all, it's the beach house guy towards the end with the phone call. That's her actual bf
I love her latest album The Lonliest time compared to Taylor's Midnight.
This is such a fantastic album. Some cheeky Canadian humour in there from Beach House and The Loneliest Time, great bops all the way through but also an album you can let play from top to bottom and enjoy it the whole time
She never misses and this new album is another incredible piece of work. Great interview! Also got to see her in SLC last week. Third time seeing her live! Her new show is amazing. I’m curious what music from Loneliest Time she might add to it. When I saw her she did all of the pre release singles as well as Go Find Yourself or Whatever (amazing to hear it for the first time live)
Carly seems like she'd be fun to just hang out with and talk for hours about literally anything.
Love CRJ so much. She and her band put on such fun and high quality live performances too.
She’s so well spoken and wise wow no wonder why she makes great songs
An awesome interview for a perfect album!
She has a very beautiful voice and soul.
now this is an interview, so calming, fun and informative
I listen to metal. Death metal. Technical Death metal. I am not ashamed to blare Carly Rae Jepsen in my car with the windows down. The list of things that keep me up at night, what people think of me doesn't even make that list. Love her and her music makes me feel good.
Carly is very highly rated I don't know why people keep calling her underrated
Great interview! The new album is amazing and heartfelt 💗
I cannot believe it took me this long to realize how fascinating and creative she is. I've only recently finally taken a deep dive into her entire output...and it's all so good.... And watching this interview now...the first time I've ever seen an interview with her, after just a few minutes in, she really reminds me of Aurora in a lot of ways. The total freedom, and intelligence, and eccentricity, and...kindness. There's definitely a very cool similarity I see. I'm glad I finally gave her stuff a chance....she's the best. :}
This album is guiding, supporting, comforting and pushing me, through my own transformation. So grateful for her courage to share so authentically 🔥 🙏
great interview, and the new album was such a treat!
Judging by this comment section she has very nice and appreciative fans. 👌

she is so insightful and thoughtful about the creative process. such a great listen
What a fantastic interview. This guy should have a national tv show
Love carly so much!!! shes a pop genius and her songs bring me so much joy and feeling😭💗💗
Carly Rae Jepsen is a gem and her music is catchy and timeless ... a classic❤
Omg, I’ve always liked CRJ but I just fell IN LOVE! Wow. What an incredibly beautiful soul. I love how present she is for this interview and how thoughtful she is with every word. 🖤
excellent interview!!! She's so down to earth and kind!
Great interview! It's amazing what happens when people truly care and connect. A fan all the way from Brazil.
The album was excellent. I must have listened to it through at least three or four times already.
Carly is amazing, not only is she a singer and a star. She’s also like everyone else, she is no different to the society we live in with the pandemic + recession.
Shes down to earth. Always wish for her happiness❤
Her album is gold, really really good! More people should listen to it;)
The explanation of beach house has really made me like it more, I wouldnt have guessed that
I adore this lady. Awesome interview, CBC.
Cool to hear her perspectives, but interviewer was a bit odd here. Seemed he was trying to push his thoughts onto her or push her into a box rather than just hearing what she's saying. He didn't seem to really understand where she was coming from with most her answers. Was just awkward and she did great being polite lol.
Carly you so so good, greatest pop artists of this era. TLT is a treasure ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great interview! And the album is amazing! Also, does anyone know where her shirt is from? I love it
Her new album is SOO good!! ❤❤❤ solid!
Love her authenticity
love this woman so much
Great interview!
Love Carly and love the album....great interview too. Tom asks great questions
Western Wind is my favorite song she has written. It's perfect.
I wish I had words left to express ,how special she has made my life
This was a good interview. Carly is a sweet woman who really is down to earth. She is the kind of person who would be fun to share insights with her.
Asireion I barely listen to other artists that are not on my stan list. I am a big Lady Gaga fan. And this one TIKTOK video explaining why Her Emotions album IS THE BEST ALBUM of 2015, I, immediately streamed it. Girllll, I CANNOT STOP LISTENING TO IT. HUHU. ALL OF HER ALBUMS! I AM PROUD TO SAY THAT SHE'S MY TOP 2 ARTIST FROM NOW ON. LOVE HER SO MUCHHH
You are such a good interviewer!
to say nothing of Carly's eloquence, this was an all-around lovely conversation to listen to. great work, great questions! thank you

Just when I thought I couldn't love CRJ any more... Thanks for this interview!
“SO NICE to see you” okay Carly
Bro WHAT, ive heard her music over the years, and theyre catchy, but just not my style; i listen to the most random mix of stuff. But holy hell, ive never actually seen her as a person, and she is drop dead gorgeous. Im actually taken aback, moved. Wow.
Queen of music👏
Can u imagine being a regular average Joe and matching with Carly Rae on a dating app
I love the way she jokingly introduced Beach House into the interview 🤣🤣
carly rae my queen i love her so much so intelligent so talented so well spoken truly one of a kind

Lol yes Tom more handsome now. Good vibes, love how she talks about intention in her music, is it connect/touch the audience? Solid album
