What a great Baroque opera renaissance we live in with all this male voice talent that's come along! Or am I just late to the game....either way, I could listen to the singing all day. Sundays are now Baroque Day. This sadly provincial American would love English subtitles so that I could appreciate the plot more, however. If only I'd stuck with French in college.....and added Italian.

So eine wunderbare Aufführung. Eine DVD von dieser Produktion wäre fabelhaft. Nur eine CD wäre zu wenig.

Spettacolo magnifico in ogni senso. Un grazie a Margravial Opera per il coraggio di aver messo in scena questo capolavoro del barocco. Biasimo per La Scala di Milano che ci ha proposto l'opera in forma di concerto per una sola sera. Miserabili!

A 2:32 quelle effroyable aria de torture ! C'est dans les situations les plus désespérées qu'on détecte les vrais héros, et cette performance où Franco est affreusement malmené , tabassé, renversé, affublé de lunettes et d'une frange qui le font légèrement loucher ne doit pas être facile à chanter en virtuose comme il le fait ...IL est exceptionnel .

Mi piace la musica barocca.

For some reason I couldn't leave a comment but now it allows one to. Right....This is a totally stunning opera in all ways . Porpora,s work transcribes beautifully to this period and probably any other modern setting . The singing and acting by all, is fantastic. Lezhneva and Faglioli excel , as does Cencic. I love this stunning stage production with it's colours and lighting but without doubt the star of the show is Porpora's composition. I would make a comparison to David McVicars Guilio Cesare both for singing and spectacle but now think this beats it. I must also include the amazing orchestra and George Petrou. The music is so beautiful. I am still playing this whole spectacle every day. Thank you from . England.

Great staging and singing, wonderful costumes; the jaded upper-class interiors of the first act are both fun and engaging. I've seen this a few times on Mezzo, happy to see it uploaded to KZread!

There is the libretto online , but they’ve made cuts and inverted the order of a couple scenes

Musically wonderful - staging appeared jarring. I would rather see a more 'straight' version of an opera so rarely performed.

Quel opéra , quels acteurs ! Mais ce qui me choque toujours autant c'est le hurlement ridicule incompréhensible qui détourne l'attention de la camera sur le canapé alors que Franco vient de terminer une de ses 2 performance les plus virtuoses de cet opéra; qui réclame un souffle exceptionnel et s'achève sur un incroyable festival d'octaves ! Le public doit être surpris et choqué lui aussi par ce détournement (aria de 1:2O jusqu'à la fin de l'acte 1) . Et je suis déçue et dégoûtée aussi par le gros lapin empaillé qu'un des enfants lui secoue sous le nez vers la fin alors qu'il chante vers 3:27 .Pourquoi ? Ca casse l'ambiance et le force à revenir dans la réalité , ce qu'il fait , et tellement bien qu'on ne sait plus si cette action ridicule a été calculée .... Il doit être trop bon , beaucoup trop bon....

Кто зает, почему мужские партии поют женскими голосами? Зачем барочные композиторы писали мужские партии писали для кастратов? Насколько мне известно, женщинам нельзя было выступать на сцене, но мужчины-то могли петь. Наверное, такая мода была.

Filme pastelão. Os mexicanos são melhores. A chanchada brasileira também. Lamentável. Elenco de alta qualidade musical, ótimas direção musical, orquestra e coro, todos desperdiçados nessas adaptação e produção medíocres.

Wonderful baroque opera in a wonderful baroque setting but an opportunity ruined by a crazed and ignorant director..

@@lorenzocassani8169 Basically because he doesn't understand the dichotomy between the baroque theatre, the baroque music and the totally inappropriate staging, This presumably is intended to be in the 1920's gangster style. It doesn't work and it's a nonsense. Great performances by the artists though, I bought the CD but will never watch it.

​​@@RollaArtis yes, Carlo Il Calvo was supposed to be set in the Middle Ages. Still, I prefer this production over those weird modern ones with ugly costumes and scenarios that don't have any meaning. I mean, take the latest production of Vinci's Catone in Utica, the one shown at the Versailles opera, as an example. It's simply absurd.
