Carl Friedberg teaches and plays Brahms Ballade in G Minor Op.118 No.3
Музыка
Brahms and Clara Schumann disciple Carl Friedberg teaching his student Bruce Hungerford how to approach the Brahms Ballade in G Minor Op. 118 No. 3 in a lesson that Hungerford recorded, followed by a full performance of the work by Frieberg at his July 24, 1951 Juilliard recital.
Not only is the playing of the 78-year-old pianist daring and blazing to the point of being volcanic, it is incredibly expansive in phrasing and adjustments to tempo according to the musical content. Even as he stretches phrases, he never loses the line nor the pulse; while these adjustments to timing can sound unusual to modern ears, they are, in fact, aligned with the structure of the composition and how the composer expected such nuancing to be employed.

Thank you so much for this. It is wonderful to hear his voice and thought, and this performance is even better than his other one on KZread. No other performer even comes close.
Exciting to be able to listen to a student of Clara Schumann and Brahms .
It's amazing to hear him teach. Thank you for posting! He is my teacher's teacher's teacher (Edmond Battersby, Barbara Holmquest, Carl Friedberg). Battersby, my late teacher, was a brilliant communicator, and both he and Holmquest kept these musical values alive and passed them down most convincingly. As always, I'm very grateful for your interest and promotion of these amazing traditions!
Thank you so much for this upload! I had countless arguments on pedalling with teachers who insisted passages like this had to be played dry.
Goosebumps!! Wonderful record of a magnificent musician. So much to learn from his prodigious musicianship and spirit!
What a treasure! Thank you!
