@@ThePianoFiles Thanks for the correction-yes; the art of performance generally was so different then, before the Logical Positvists got their hands on all printed texts, music included. This playing actually SAID something!

Great (but I really don't like how this piece ends - almost as if Brahms is saying, "Sorry for being so jolly; I'm really a 'Serious Composer', you know"!)! Thanks for posting.

To my ears, this starts presto not allegro; surely too fast to make complete musical sense? To make matters worse, the "diddly-dums" in the middle section are so rushed as to sound ridiculous. The reprise is slightly less hectic, but it still doesn't "work" for me. Thanks for posting anyway!

It's funny: so many people talk about "profound", "inspired", "intense", "emotional", "musical" playing, but what does that actually mean? Why is Performance A profound, inspired, intense, emotional and musical and Performance B not? What makes it so? There's mention of tone quality and phrasing, which of course are important, though there is surely no single, unequivocally "beautiful" tone quality that suits every piece (would one use the same tone quality for Mozart and Rachmaninoff? Surely not) and phrasing will also differ greatly depending on the piece; there is, less helpfully, talk of spontaneity and "artistry", but, again, what do such epithets mean in practice? Taking liberties with the score / tempo / pulse? When you start thinking about it, it's all pretty impossible to pin down and, ultimately, comes down to a matter of taste. Some people will prefer Performance A and some Performance B. As for this performance, it certainly creates an appropriately sombre mood or atmosphere, which is what we experience more than merely hearing a succession of notes and chords. Does that make it profound, inspired, emotional and musical? I guess so ... Thanks for posting anyway!

A performance that is separate from the world's being, truly possesses your consciousness into a trance-like state. Up there with Géza Anda's DG 1966 which is slightly more rigid and conservative than this one, but I consider them both my favorite.

Exquisite performance of a piano version that J.S. Bach would have loved. (Seriously, J.S. Bach would have gone bananas over the modern piano, and he would have immediately understood and loved jazz music.)

Chopin’s Etude in E has always been my favorite. I have read that he said it reminded him of Poland, his home. The piece has been labelled “Tristesse”, but I never thought it was sad. I saw a French TV movie entitled “Baisers cachés,” and realized that the Etude’s emotional journey exactly matched the movie’s. My hobby is making videos, and I knew I had to put them together. So if you would like to hear Youri Egorov turn Sadness into Love, try this: Nathan, Louis and Youri kzread.info/dash/bejne/nIOokrGGnpPAlag.html

So many liberties taken with the score, and yet it feels like she takes none due to the confidence with which she plays. I’m starting to suspect that ‘confidence’ is the only thing modern pianists actually lack compared to older ones… people should be encouraged to play like this, not shamed for it.

I love the fact that there’s no affectation in the whole playing. Rachmaninoff, since the first chords, let purely the notes tells to us what they mean, creating an interesting and irresistible harmony. It’s deep and super clear
