Peter Thiel is one of the few people that understands the real danger of having somebody decide for society what is allowed or proper and what is not. That road is a very very scary one if you choose it.

Enlightment about obvious reality is always stunning. It is like a citizen of North Korea leaving it and being pushed into a free world, the more scary world where you are responsible for your actions, where you compete, when you do hard decissions personally and nobody can help you.

The ending sums it up. Peter has had his argument thought out in his head for over a decade and has been advocating for it. He knows his position. All I hear from Reid are questions about "the true nature of reality" and getting to the bottom of true and false. Peter has the clearly defined viewpoint. The left has to decide where it stands.

Peter Thiel it is clearly the case that Food, Medicine, and Shelter (land-use-and-zoning as Thiel says) need to be regulated, as their demand is likely to become inelastic fast in certain conditions that are probabilistically more prevalent. Land-use and Zoning ... how do you propose we fix this?

Far too short for deep conversations like this. Things were just getting started, the end felt rushed and unnatural. I'd say shoot for 2 hours minimum. Very disappointed in Mr. Thiel on the topic of free speech when hate speech briefly came up. His breathless virtue signalling about not defending hate speech as if it is a crime shows how spineless people in leadership roles have become. You don't have to agree with the hate speech to stand in defense of free speech. After all it's the worst most uncomfortable speech that needs protection, not comfortable speech everyone can accept. If you outlaw hate speech you break the protections freedom of speech grants all of us and it'll then only be a matter of time before government decides speech against a political party or against a policy, or against some other issue important to those in power is hate speech. Defend all speech, even hate speech, by staunchly standing up for and insisting on freedom of all speech any time the topic comes up. Having to listen to the occasional obnoxious hate-monger is a small price to pay to remain free. Allow the public square to ridicule them no need to make any laws against any kind of speech. Remain spineless and virtue signal every time it comes up and it won't be long before laws begin to change.

Why not just say "diversity of ideas" ? What's with all this race and sexuality stuff? Do black people and gay ppl think differently because they're black or gay? Is being gay or black a different kind of human experience that requires us to take it into consideration when we have an interlectual discussion? And if it is, shouldn't we start investigating the uniqu way these people experience reality? maybe they have super powers.

that's exactly what peter thiel points out in his book "myth of diversity" between, there is more diversity within groups than between groups. So the whole concept of getting people who look different in order to get more diverse ideas is invalid

  • @rickeysmith321

Kytsche actually it makes perfect sense. It depends on what level of analysis you're working on. If you're talking at the group level, you're necessarily going to have to use low resolution, broad, general terms in order to encapsulate the whole group while remaining truthful and factual. If you dont care about truth or facts then you have more leeway but who wants to build anything based on a non-truth. At the individual level is where the saying "there is always an exception to the rule" is literally played out. That is specifically why individuals within groups are more varied than groups are varied unless you're just being absurd trying to compare apples and banana's.

Peter you dodged the question about hate speech. Hate speech is what offends Liberals. If it offends Reps Liberals media (95% of all media) doesnt categorise it as hate speech.. The same as antisemitism - it is not what is insulting J e w s not being based on facts but what they subjectively consider forbidden to say. BTW you dont even can use the word - because it is cesored. So hate speech is not the problem, the problem is control over objectivity of these who censor free speech and limits it more than it can be tolerated. US constitutaion doesnt know idea of hate speech. So in terms of being American what is the basis to censor anybody in US internet? What true american way, legal way? Isnt censorship the way to ignore constitution? USA is simply not american anymore.
