Advances in transportation are neglected, because budgets don't calculate based on things like infrastructure, improvements in education, healthcare or ANYTHING that benefits the needs of society. Investment in our "financialized" economy is going to the development of weapons, data harvesting and surveillance technology. Our preoccupation with being the hegemon instead of considering cooperation, has led us into a state of permanent war. Funding "friendly" nations in their conflicts and sanctioning those we perceive a threat has proved disastrous. Without becoming overly Nationalistic, America needs to move away from globalization, rebuild our manufacturing base and put our citizens back to work.
