@@Svstrauser Indeed, and when you really DO construct a coherent, synergized, and efficient EDH deck it will show on the table. Wasn't the most efficient but the first thing I ever built that made people truly scared was a Momir Vig big creature deck. Could create infinite mana, infinite turns, could spew out all of its creatures in a single turn. Was fun stuff.

I bait my opponents using my life. I let them think they got me on the ropes which makes them over confident and make play mistakes. By the time they get me down to low health I have them locked down and stripped them of their resources. Breya, is at the helm of my cEDH

its funny, because I play a lifegain deck in casual. I sometimes have a completely clear and useless board and still my opponents treat me like Im their worst nightmare because I'm at 47 Life........

I also wanted to point out, as far as Delay versus Counterspell goes, that Counterspell sending the spell to the graveyard is OFTEN worse than Delay having it exiled for 3 turns in cEDH.

Delay shows the obivous threat that comes in 3 turns to everyone, so people, especially your opponents will prepare and spend a second removal/counterspell to deal with it, which can often be used to your favor.

This is actually pretty good for people who don't play CEDH or are completely unlikely to play it either. I'll never play CEDH cause I'm one of those folks who groans whenever a Dimir commander shows up cause I know they're going to Consultation + Oracle to victory. However what you said about learning about dead draws and card evaluation is worthwhile. I have plenty (way too many) cards in my casual decks that end up being dead draws. It's why I took my Gavi deck apart - it was completely dead draws to me (half the time I needed to keep the card 'in hand' just in case my opponents had a reason to play and she was doing nothing.) Learning the CEDH card evaluation will help tone up casual EDH decks as well I think

Just started playing cEDH earlier this year, really appreciate these tutorials they help a lot.

All great points incredibly relevant for tuning non CEDH decks as well thanks 👍

I prefer cards that are versatile, other than cards with modes I will give a couple examples, please critique or share the knowledge in the future video. Nowadays I usually run winds of rebuke over cyclonic rift and the idea has been challenged by other people, but my reason is the versatility of winds of rebuke: It can save your permanent, mills away cards people who just search with tutors to put on top of library which you see in almost every single game of cEDH. Cyclonic rift in cEDH will be used to bounce one permanent most of the time, sure when you overload it can be powerful but it's 7 mana that doesn't win you the game but only set back the board presence, you might even be helping another opponent by returning key cards or tapped mana vault/grim monolith they benefit from replaying them. Same reason I also run predict in my Elsha deck, it can be used to manipulate my top or get rid of other people's tutor on top of library while drawing 2 cards. Another card I don't see played in cEDH deck but I think is very versatile and a great card is memory's journey. I run it in my FC sliver deck: it recovers my key cards, it combos just like timetwister loop but opponents don't draw (combos with noxious revival and extract), and it can also disrupt graveyard strategy, shuffle away opponent's tutor put on top of the library, and even thassa's oracle + consultation combo by shuffling 3 cards back to the library if oracle is the only source of blue devotion.

well, winds of rebuke is a wincon in double scepters, while cyclonic rift is only a board wipe.

This is a really well done series with great presentation and quality. This would have been super helpful for me when I was first learning how to play cEDH. But even as a player with some cEDH experience under my belt, this is still interesting and informative. The content here is vital for understanding the cEDH format.

I love this series. I’m a big commander player and I wanted to get into cedh the decks I have in the works are thrasios//tymna, Derevi, Selvala, and kenrith with Zirda as a companion.

Glad to see my boy Kenrith make an appearance in the video. I only play him casually and he’s downright amazing there, so I can only imagine the power he possesses in cEDH (from what I hear consultation scepter is quite popular)

If possible could you do a Deck Tech on a previous Tier 1 CEDH deck?

A good learning experience. I am not a CEDH player by any means, I am nowhere near good enough I don't think. But I am trying to push my K'rrik combo deck up that way, and maybe gain a deeper understanding of how I should be thinking about things during games. I know I often make sub-optimal plays, or don't get the threat at the time. But always learning.

This feels like watching my online college class, unless it's far far more enjoyable :))

I found this video, I'm considering going into my first cedh build or improving one of my decks as far up into cedh as I can. Lots of good information here that makes sense....at least until I compare what is said to my play experiences. The two don't line up.

So true, I was testing out See the Truth from Core21 in Elsha and I thought it would be great. I've never cast it from the top of my library.

I really enjoy the speed and interaction of CEDH, but Card Selection is the main reason I don't think I'd ever be able to play only CEDH. 99% of my pet cards aren't good enough for competitive tables. 😂 One day, I'll make X Spell tribal work in cedh. One day, once I'm rich and can afford a 4c manabase.

You could always do a Zaxara deck with misc. freed from the real and pemmin's aura combos and then random good X spells. While it might not be completely cEDH, it will be higher power since Zaxara Freed is actually a cEDH deck gameplan.

I feel like it would be important to mention that a big upside to Delay over Counterspell is the game is usually over before that spell becomes relevant again. In standard EDH, that card is still a threat so a regular counterspell might be a better choice.

I think another really important consideration when evaluating commanders is what colors they give you access to. Mono-colored commanders (especially white, red, and black ones) have a much higher bar than a four-color commander.

I loved the first question, but I'll be honest in saying that there are a ton of combo loops that may be contingent on an activated ability of an artifact or enchantment, which is where Krosan Grip can prevent those loops from happening on the stack where Nature's Claim would be useless. Certainly an edge case, but something I think about a lot when I see combos + how Krosan Grip can prevent them

Love this series! Just getting into cEDH and this is reinforcing a lot of good lessons. I was wondering, do you guys ever do any "rate my deck" content? I think it would be a great idea to have people from the community submit their ideas for cEDH decks, and to get your opinion on what it's power level it would be. In any case, keep up the great content!

are you going to make a video of card management? Would like to see more in to what you think when it comes to discard effekts like when you have to do a turn one or zero force of will. what do you discard and how to make up for the card loss?

A good way to choose a CEDH commander is does it fit these criteria: 1. Is it a draw or ramp engine? 2. Is it part of the infinite combo? 3. Does it contain blue? 4. Does it cost 5 or less mana? While blue is not required for a CEDH commander, counterspells are one of the most powerful resources in the format and not playing blue gives a disadvantage in that respect.

Yes but that also shows that forcing your game plan is as efficient as interracting with other but ofc blue (and black) are the most interractive colors (but lets not forget about all non-blue counterspell like pyroblast that are omnipresent in all decks that can run them)

I think another important part about card choice is does it thin out your deck? There's a reason partners are so commonly played. Having a 98 card deck is a huge advantage to a 99 card deck. Also, being able to run 8-10 fetches thins your deck out quicker for less dead draws.

Why don't more CEDH players play Brushwagg tiibal? On a serious note, this was incredibly informative!

I will always consider Demonic Consultation a trap tutor. It WILL exile stuff that you need, if you use it as a tutor.

I've been thinking if running Oona's grace (2U target player draws a card) would be a viable way to stop decks that exile/mill/draw their own deck as a win-con... while it wouldn't work if Jace/lab man is already on bord, if the library is "out" and they cast them, it kills them, and can be used when oracles etb goes on stack... but it's 3 mana...

is there a list of best card type for each color for cedh somewhere ? like removal draw etc ?

Loving the new series. How do cards that depend on what color your opponents are running like compost or similarly restricted effects get evaluated?

They are more meta calls than anything else. There are some that are considered to be "evergreen" like Carpet of Flowers, simply due to the abundance of Blue in CEDH. You'll almost never sit down to a table without blue being present. Remember, decks from things like the CEDH decklist database are templates, and you should always adjust as necessary to your meta. Have fun!

@@PlayingWithPowerMTG That, and Carpet of Flowers is good not only because there almost always is blue, but moreso there will always be islands. I've played Carpet of Flowers in a casual playgroup and all three of the other decks had blue. But all of their blue sources were guildgates, cycle lands, battlebond lands, orchards, etc. Three wasn't a single island played the whole game. Whereas in CEDH, if your deck has blue and you need blue, it's going to be a fetch land that grabs a shock land, so there will almost always be an island on board.

My rationale on why I play Vial Smasher over Tymna is IN MY PLAY GROUP basically everyone is running some sort of green acceleration or things like Najeela. If I Pyroclasm or flamesweep at the right time I literally can win uncontested XD to me that makes Smasher good in my pof at least!

One card I'm curious about is Power Sink. It costs X and a blue, and says the following: counter target spell unless its controller pays X mana. If that player doesn't, they tap all lands they control and empty their mana pool. Is that a viable counterspell option? It seems like it would be, because the opponent is forced to pay some amount of man regardless of whether or not they want to keep their spell (barring other counterspells, of course).

Is xenagos god of reavels good enough in the commandzone cause I’m having hard time seeing any gruul decks get into cedh

If you guys are interested in content ideas I think it would be cool after you finish this series to make one showing how to progress a deck to cEDH, by that I mean take your typical Prosh food chain deck (outdated I know) Show a version thats around $200 that can be used with non cEDH tables and how you can sub in and out cards based on the tables you play with. That way someone can make a deck and slowly over time build it to cEDH but at the same time have one deck they can have a sideboard of subouts to power down to meet the tables needs for the average EDH table.

Depends on your build tbh, I could see it as a target you can get out with recruiter that provides a fast clock and can carry swords really well while you are staxing ppl out but since the main wincon usually is infinite Mana with the monoliths it doesn't really help with that.

@@GamerdevilPro It's an awesome turn 1 or 2 play, but when my life total gets lower due to Mana Crypt, Ancient Tomb, fetch lands and my opponents, it's a card I wouldn't want to see later in the game, so I think I will cut it for an Aura of Silence.

Now that the commander death trigger rule has changed. Can kokusho be a good competitor in cedh?

I'm curious, I've been building an Alesha, who Smiles at death combo deck for a while and I was wondering why they're aren't as many graveyard strategies in cEDH. I understand that it can often be removed with rest in peace effects, but I find the resiliency to reoccur threats as well as stax pieces just too good to pass up. On a separate note, are cards like anguished Unmaking good in comp? It is rather expensive at 3 mana, but it is incredibly versatility, wanted a professional opinion.

Nice of you to mention Elsha, I'm currently having issues evaluating the following card's for my flex slots against each other: Supreme Verdict, Path to Exile, Revoke Existance, Abrade. What I want is the 2 best cards to deal with the currently hatebear/hatepiece heavy meta. I feel like going just by Mana Cost or Instant might be right, but will it work out? Had several games now, in which Supreme Verdict would have been god-tier useful. Having Personal Tutor also make me more confident in using Soceries for specific cases.

I use terminus as a way to wipe the board with reduced resource investment. I also have played supreme verdict but was bit too rough on the mana.

If you find yourself wishing to have a particular card in your deck, I feel that is a good reason to include it and test it. _Personal Tutor_ is fine I guess, but being a sorcery limit it, because you need to preplan your play if you don't have Elsha out or a way to draw cards which would give your opponents plenty of time to play around, and even with Elsha out, Personal Tutor is the most effective when is on top of your deck, which need extra support to put it there or keep it there (like Scroll Rack or Top), _Mystical Tutor_ don't any of that issues and have extra targets. I would suggest _Disenchant_ instead of _Revoke Existance_ because is an instant and can be used regardless of your Elsha situation. Now between Path to Exile, Disenchant or Abrade, depend between how much of those hatepiece you want out are enchantment, if few or none, then maybe Abrade might be better choice because is the most flexible

I'm definitly in to make bold choices to try out.^^ I mentioned Personal Tutor because I have it now and makes access to problem solving sorceries better, sometimes instants don't solve every issue I've had (more on that in a bit). It does not replace Mystical Tutor, which is an always include, rather it replaced Merchant Scroll. Disenchant is most likely better, the exile clause is not as important as I might fear. Now I already of course run just creature removal in the deck, recently I found my self able to combo, but still had to deal with Mystic Remora or Grafdiggers Cage on opponents side. With only Wear // Tear in the deck and all win cons are storm, I feel like needing another card like that.

Supreme verdict is way too expensive and not really viable. Path to exile is just not that great as it gives your opponent free ramp. Revoke existence can be good but between it and abrade, I think abrade is better since with enchantments you can always remove them with a bounce spell right before you try to win. Abrade gets rid of drannith permanently which is a threat that you can't merely deal with with a bounce spell. Edit: abrade over path as abrade basically kills most creatures anyways so they both kill creatures but abrade has no downside of giving ramp and also gets rid of cards like winter orb.

Love the video, but am curious about a few cards that the guidelines leave in a weird place. 1. Force cycle from MH. Which are playable? Is the black one playable for instance? 2. Blasphemous Act. It seems to be a good sweeper, but I rarely see it in cEDH lists. Why? 3. What is the cost limit on counterspells? Specifically Cryptic Command. 4. Foil. Playable or is the 3 for 1 too steep?

1. Negation and Vigor. Despair has a very small window of being useful and there are better recursion effects in black. The other two have effects that do so little that they are not really playable even in EDH. 2. There has to be a large number of creatures to make it worth the casting and generally when you are playing creatures you play so few or they are part of you combo win for that turn. 3.2 or less Cryptic is cool and all but it has a very prohibitive casting cost with three blue pips. 4. Too steep of a cost since one has to be an island and cEDH decks have a low amount of lands to begin with, holding a land in you hand plus another card makes it very awkward to play.

Is Doubling-Season a good card for a deck which is built around +1/+1-Counters (Atraxa) or are alternate cards like winding constrictor better?

If you're just doing +1/+1 counter stuff you're better off running the new Branching Evolution from Jumpstart. It gives you the doubling counters half of DS for 2 less mana.

People are brewing Lurrus, but so far no one has come out with anything of substantial value.

Can you do a video similar to this but card evaluation based on group metas? Like which card is better to pick based on the meta your playing? My biggest struggle is my "MAYBE BOARD" and having this fat stack of cards that I'll add or cut depending on how our meta flows but it's always the hardest step in deck building for me. Do I add 1, 2, or 3 of this card type? Should I add a 4th to be safe? Should I cut this effect for a similar effect based on my meta? Should I cut 2 of this effect since I have 4 of it already and add 2 different effects to balance out for 2 and 2? It's questions like that, that really put my brain into a knot. The hardest part of building a deck for me is this situation and my 1st build of a deck, I'll have a stack of like 400 cards and make cuts over the course of a few days before I finally get to a build I feel comfortable with, then the meta molding happens and I'm ready to give up lol. I've only been playing cEDH for about 2 years and my "maybe board" is something that eats me up when I go to sleep at night haha.

Any feedback from anyone in the community with more knowledge than me is always welcome for input. I'm not stubborn, I will accept all teachings from you elder dragon lords (😅) I have a solid foundation of cEDH, I understand pet card's aren't always welcome, not every new deck is a primer, the friendly sportsman ship and no pub stomping for fun or power hunger. I respect the community and have been following for a long time but about 2 years ago I took all my decks and fusion-ha'd them together, like Kid trunks and Gohan in the Buu saga, and made a Muldrotha flash hulk deck. After flashes ban and some more learning, I switched over to tasigur recently and run a more control/spell slinger deck than a value permanent strategy like I did in Muldrotha. 6cmc on Muldrotha and 6cmc on tasigur, I learned very quickly how strong the power of delve is and grew a soft spot for the banana boy.

I've been playing magic since Innistrad, EDH a couple years after, and really grew into cEDH 2 years ago when a friend brought boonweaver to our barley more powerful than precons, game night. (rip sadface kinda night) I would love a video based on my suggestion or part of the video at least haha. I'll call it.... Molding to Your Meta!

Emry can be competitive. He enables combos to be performed. Urza is more stax / advantage. They are both good (Urza is just a bit better).

Quite useful indeed, I'm new to cEDH, currently experimenting with Kinnan. Is it smart to run some big creatures with him? If so how many would be too many? His ability is quite pricey, even with discounts from Familiar etc. I've seen e.g. Selvala ran with Ghalta and Kogla which seem like a good fit for Kinnan as well.

Cedh kinnan is more often focused around generating infinite Mana, drawing your deck, and winning with thassas Oracle. Big dudes just don't do enough to immediately impact the game for the most part.

I'm interested! I have a Kara deck in the ''focused'' range of power and It's very fun to play, but not cedh. I'm curious to see it. I guess it is built around hatebears, but I wonder what the wincons are.

Why do people run talismans over signets? Less restrictive I’m guessing, because they can tap for 1 where signets have to tap for 2.

Because in a situation where the lands you used to put out the artifact can no longer be used because they are either destroyed (Armageddon) or they don't untap(Back to Basics). When this happens, signets can't be used anymore because they require 1 to use while talismans are useable as a stand alone Mana source.

Good video but I must ask: Why would the gap between 2 and 3 mana be larger than the gap between 1 and 2? From my understanding, 2 is twice as much as 1, but 3 is only 1.5 times as much as 2. Is there something more that I'm missing?

Techniqually you are right, but its more about how much mana you hold up for removal/counters. Holding up 1 or 2 mana in a fast paced game where you must develop your boardstate as fast as possible is far more affordable than 3 or more. Not to forget the chance of the spell you cast getting countered. If it gets countered, then its much better to waste low cost spells

Great question! it's difficult to make an entire explainer in the comments, but overall it's about more than just multipliers. It's about what the numbers represent. The less you spend per resource, the more you can do. Also, the more something costs, the longer it takes to be able to use it in the first place.

If you have 3 mana total, a 3mana answer will use 100 percent of your mana while a cheaper answer will let you play something new or you can hold up a 2 and 1 mana answer.

There's a question i want to ask to help me understand the mindset you have in cedh. Is the card standstill cedh worthy?

It doesn't really see any play in the decks we've seen. Could it have a home? Maybe, but it depends on the deck. It could have a home in an enchantment matters stax deck perhaps!

This is more of a card question, what do you think about unsubstantiate seeing play over something like remand?

unsubstantiate is seeing play because it essentially "combo" with Dockside Extortionist. This is especially good in turbo ad nausem decks because it is a counterspell/removal/ritual depending on board state. Remand is just a very unreliable counterspell, so remand sees almost no play.

Ziyan Li the problem why I don’t like unsubstantiate as much as remand is that it doesn’t draw you a card. It has more versatility but it’s losing you a card in hand for not much more versatility. For bouncing a creature, the most use I see is bouncing a commander like tymna or selvala which is much more of a tempo advantage, or maybe bouncing your own dockside. The return a spell seems much more useful in cedh, so I feel like a card in hand can be worth that little bit of versatility. I think it also depends on the deck, because cards like blink of an eye are played in many mono blue decks and that’s definitely not the most amazing card to see play

Unsubstantiate is good for the reasons cited above, but is also good for things like uncounterable spells (Dovin's Veto, Abrupt Decay, etc.). Remand is used because it replaces itself, but the spell overall isn't great. It doesn't see play over other countermagic.

I really love partner commanders, so what about Brallin and Shabraz. I understand they may not be amazing, (you'll almost never use Shabraz in cedh, but brallin is the win con), so are they worth it? I mean, it's half of a win con in the command zone but it doesn't give card advantage or anything.

Brallin and Shabraz are very good CEDH commanders in my opinion. I think they are top tier (or at least close to being top tier).

Brallin // Shabraz is good for CEDH. Brallin is good as a combo wincon, but with all the wheel effects used in the deck, Shabraz is a great blocker/beater. Never underestimate the power of a huge flyer!

Unless it's to steal a wincon you know already exists in other decks, it probably is not.

Only reason I run Korsan Grip vs Nature's claim is because in my meta there's an Omnath deck that is reliant on sac outlets to kill the board, so being able to remove the outlets before they can be used is a bigger pay off for me.

Keep in mind that mana abilities like Ashnod's and Phyrexian Altar's can be activated even with a spit second spell on the stack. Of course they can't do much with the mana until the Krosan Grip has resolved.

@@hiddenleaf414 Well you can't normally, but you can activate mana abilities. since the sacrifice is the cost of the mana abilities for those specific artifacts it works

I want to make a cedh deck with Mikaeaus, Triskelion and Tooth and Nail. Is it even even possible to make a cedh deck with these cards because their Mana costs are so high.

You'd be better off running the deck known as "Honorless Meren". Maren is a value engine but is not required to win. Another important thing to consider when building a cEDH deck, or any deck, in general, is how effective is the deck when your commander is taxed out of the game. Honorless Maren, a deck that I run myself, works to get protean hulk on the field, and then win through a hulk stack, sometimes 2 hulk stacks back to back. You'd use this to fetch for Mike and Walking Ballista, not Triskelion. Trike is a dead card in cEDH and is extremely costly. I'd be willing to go over the combo with you in detail if you'd like in DMs, or, if you play MTGO I can even show you. The deck is capable of t2 wins with a perfect draw, and has a second backup wincon as well.

@@zaexyr9503 Thank you for answering me so extensively. If you only have Mika. and W.B. the combo doesn't work because W.B. needs two counters; one to deal demage to a player and one to itself because Mika. give it plus one power and toughness.

@@tilmang861 That is when you use a sac outlet you already have in play to sac WB again. It will return to the field with a 1/1 counter due to undying. Then, you ping your target, sac WB again, and repeat the process.

Why isn't the mineoplasm competitive anymore?

Love this new content, but please pick better background music. It sounds like a cheezy infomercial, or like I'm sitting in class again. The information in the videos so far is good but the music makes me want to tune out. I'll keep watching no matter what, that's just my 2 cents

Good video :) Although.... I would prefer non-game play videos in addition to rather than instead of gameplay videos

The lifegain is pretty irrelevant in cEDH so i doubt it. The draw is great but youd have to play your commander for 6 mana first. Its alot of mana to invest into a card that only draws you cards. Tho i think every commander can be some kind of cedh

If you want to run an esper deck and don't care much about casting your commander and don't want to play Zur. the 4-8 life you'll get from him is not much, but better than nothing i guess. I also think that any commander can be cedh viable since it can only be there for color identity or if you want to challenge yourself, but not using it is a waste.

Its a hard color tp do anything with due to cololess being slow compared to other colors

My Elsha deck is unbelievably broken. It can win on turn 2 or 3, not just consistently, but constantly lol

Not gonna lie, kinda upset that when you did "Is your commander part of your wincon?" you didnt do Najeela. The Elsha example you used needs to find 2 cards, Najeela, for example, only needs to find 1, there by absolutely minimizing your 'dead draws'. You also didn't take into account 'ease of removal' as a consideration. Najeela(to use her again as an example) doesn't use Bear Umbra or Sword of Feast and Famine even though they combo with her because an opponent can remove the target creature in response (Bear Umbra on the stack and Equip Trigger for Sword). But for a quick 12 minute video, you did great. Maybe you could do a more in-depth series that references these intros?

I hope that people watching this video will realize that their is not a good reason to ban Lutri in edh, especially after the Companion rule change

crovax 13 they banned it before the companion change and copying a demonic tutor, removal spells, consultation, counters or anythjng like that wasn’t bad when you had an extra card for free anyway and it was only 3 mana

@@jakobostheimer4066 before the Companion rule change I was on the fence about supporting the RC's decision to pre-ban Lutri. I feel that banning cards in edh is a playgroup discussion. But after the rules change its hard to argue that Lutri is a "free" card

crovax 13 While it certainly wouldn’t make the cut if it was in the 99 and something else could make it instead, the fact that there is NO opportunity cost to include it makes it extremely powerful. That was the main problem with Lurrus in Vintage and Legacy. The card is just okay, until there’s no opportunity cost to run it. Starting with an extra card in hand, no matter what, is an advantage when it comes at no cost.
