The problem is the short straight sector of the N2ZW which makes response sluggish, then it hits hard because the needle is rather lean in the second sector, then is moderate till WOT. The needle is from down low to WOT: rich > lean > moderate. The 38 pilot should be ok even if temps are below 8° degrees centigrade. You cold try a NECW/NEDW needle or if cold a richer NECH. For all of the NExx needles it can be said they are (again from low to WOT): lean > moderate > rich and give a lot crisper response from low throttle openings then get progressively richer till WOT and hence feel linear. If you want to compare the N2ZW and the NECW they have the same (W=) diameter of 2.375 mm but the NECW and its brothers have a longer straight section avoiding the burbly feeling down low. Most important, the NExx needles are way thinner therefore richer in the last sector and can be run with 160 or 162 main jet instead the 165. Average riders or riders that mainly do technical riding without a lot of wide open throttle will like the smaller main jets. Racers will prefer the OEM jet (165) that in combination with the thinner needle delivers even more fuel. If you have both needles (N2xx and NExx) you can see the difference between the tips with bare eyes. Unfortunately I couldn't attach a pic.

Vsdy informative! Thanks! Advice on 23 Sherco 300? Stock needle(clip in top.postion) 38 pilot/165 main. Sea level is from 900 to 2000 ft. Still isn't cleaned up at quarter throttle. 35 pilot scares me about being too lean. Thanks for any reply!!
