    Thanks for the quick reply. I recently cleaned the carb bowl and jets due to a green color build up junk all on the inside, im guessing from using ethanol cut gas. I should be getting a rebuild kit in within a week or two. Thanks again for your time. Have a good one!

    Hi Junkman learned alot from your vid. I have a question. Before I rebuilt my 400cc yamaha kodiak atv carb it was idling fine, but would bog out when I gave it more then 1/4 throttle or more. Since installing the rebuild kit, it no longer bogs and revs up great, but it idles too high.The idle adjustment screw located near the throttle cable seems to have no effect. Is there another adjustment that I missed? The carb is a slide valve Mikuni. Thanks

    Well depending on the carburetor it can be just another name for the pilot jet, however a few carburetors have a pilot and slow jet (as they call it) as well as a main jet. In these carburetors the slow jet is to provide a smoother transition to from the pilot (only in operation at idle speed) to the main jet. They are usually only found on CV type carbs.

  • @thejunkman
    @thejunkman12 жыл бұрын

    @altlandf Changing a combination of the pilot and main jet (go up/bigger numbers) is what your going to have to do. Ethanol is not really much of a problem in pump gas as long as your jetting is correct for the elevation, air temp and density. Also running a stabilizer in the fuel will help the fuel stay at its best. Ethanol doesn't cause overheating, lean jetting does.

    My 92' dr 650 seems to be flooding itself while at and idle, it will stall at stoplights and even clutch shifts from second to first. Would a typical carb kit likely fix this problem? Did I even diagnose the problem correctly?

    So i just bought a 92 ninja 600 and it ran fine when i was test driving it, but as i rode off with it i noticed it started to bog down and then when i went to stop it just died before i even stopped. After riding it for a few more minutes it would start but wouldn't idle. it would just bog down and die. If i left it alone for 15, 20 minutes it started right up with no problems idling. but then same thing after riding it for a few. im thinking this is a carb problem??

    I live in Pa and right now the temps are around 25 to 45 degrees out. The problem I am having it's hard to start. Once it warms up it runs pretty good. How do I get more fuel to the engine when it's cold. Another thing in our area we have this garbage called ethanol in the gas. It's suppose to be less than 10 percent but I think it's causing my Honda CM 250 to overheat. This is a air cooled engine. How do I get the carb to run richer? I think with the ethanol it's running way too lean.

    Great video, this seems to be the only one I can find based on the mikuni bst34. I'm rebuild one for a friend's yamaha ttr 225 and It's having a problem with leaking through the float bowl drain. I would just assume it's a float issue if it were any other carb, but since this one was ridden pretty hard the nipple for the drain line was broken off. I'm afraid this caused a small crack that's allowing fuel to bypass the stop screw. I can't find replacement bowls anywhere. Do you perhaps know where I could get my hands on one?

    9 жыл бұрын

    Patricia Vittner Yes you will need to jet the carb as it did not come with the machine. It will need some adjustment to the machine you are putting it on. The main jet does not have anything to do with the idle quality. Read up on my carburetor jetting page and it will give you an idea of what setting(s) to change. www.thejunkmanadv.com/motorcycle-carburetor-jetting.html

  • @thejunkman

    @thejunkman

    8 жыл бұрын

    +GERMAN SHEPARD How do you read the manual? I am not sure how to answer that, the manual should have a table and a description on how to do it for your specific bike. 5E31-3/5 is the needle profile, not the clip position. The manual will state the clip position (if adjustable). I have a jetting page on my website (link in the description) that will help you understand the other adjustments. However the first thing is to return the carburetor back to factory specs per the manual.

    Not sure why you bought a new carburetor. Carburetors don't go "bad" unless they get physically damaged and your "old" one is probably fine. Have you checked to see if the new carburetor is even jetted to the correct factory specs? Sounds like you are not getting any fuel. Also for faster answers from me please leave your comment on my site. I hate KZread commenting system so much it is hard to find or answer questions here.

    question i found out about my jet needle on my 1987 tt225 it has 5 notches it's currently in the middle with a clip, the lower you put the clip the bike run rich, the higher you go it runs leaner, what would you set it at? the manual does not state what to set it at! also if i set my air fuel mixer screw under 3 1/2 turn the bike runs ruff and the manual states 2 1/2 to 3/4 turns?

  • @thejunkman

    +GERMAN SHEPARD Start in the middle position and then test from there. Read about jetting on my jetting page for recommendations on maybe a main jet change if going to the extremes on the clip position doesn't help.

  • @thejunkman

    @thejunkman

    8 жыл бұрын

    +jeff 16 When you had it apart did you check all the settings per the service manual? The float needle valve is what controls the fuel flow into the carburetor, if the float height is too high or too low this will affect how the fuel enters the carburetor bowl. Sound too low from your description. You will need the service manual to set it properly as carburetors vary from machine to machine in their settings. Also the needle valve itself could be stuck or worn, replace if needed.

    Neither is better than the other. They both do the same function, just with a slightly different design.

  • @thejunkman

    It is fairly possible that the diaphragm is the problem. The only real way to know is to disassemble the carburetor and inspect it for tears or pin holes. I also could be a blocked passage with dirt or varnish from old or poor fuel.

    Short answer is yes, however ALL fuels today can have their problems if left sitting for long periods of time without using a fuel stabilizer. Key to success with any fuel you use in a carburetor equipped machine is to consistently use a stabilizer so if the machine has to sit for weeks on end the fuel will not varnish or "flash off" leaving deposits that can clog jets, passages or deteriorate rubber seals. Check out my website for more info.

    You probably have some debris that is only partially blocking a passage in the carburetor. When you turned the petcock it probably dislodged some old dirt or varnish. Or possible debris on the bottom of the tank caused it since when you turn to reserve it allows the fuel to flow from the bottom of the tank versus the dip tube via the "on" product.

    Well a carb kit shouldn't be $100. If it is just the bowl gasket leaking that is pretty cheap and an easy fix. If it is leaking out the overflow you have other issues inside the carburetor. Visit the webpage and leave a comment on the video page and it will be easier for me to respond. Follow the link in the description

    You are correct, modifying the stock exhaust will probably mean you will have to adjust the jetting slightly for the difference in flow characteristics of your modified exhaust. Given you have no idea how a carb works I would first study up on basic theory first so when someone gives you advice you have some idea what they are talking about. Explanation would be too lengthy for a comment here. Contact me via Facebook and I can "try" to explain or help. However I cannot recommend any changes

    what is the purpose of that little "button" spring on the needle valve?

  • @thejunkman

    It helps east the "shock" and vibration from the engine or if in the case of motocross bikes landing off of jumps and things, otherwise it could damage the brass tang.

    Measurement should be taken with the tang just touching the needle valve.

    I am not sure what part you are talking about unless it is the air OR fuel screw. Comment on my website if you have more questions as I can explain better with out being limited by number of characters.

    Well it is hard to pin exactly down which setting or settings to change. Watch my carburetor jetting video for help in understanding what you should change. You are running rich so you need to lean out certain settings, probably the main jet for starters, but maybe the jet needle clip position. Watch my video to understand how these parts affect the air/fuel mix in the carburetor at different throttle openings. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gWlnxZOBqKanpaw.html

    fyi...the goverment passed a bill that allows oil companys to now be allowed to use up to 15% ethanol,they were at 10 % before...there are products out there that you can use to offset the ethanol..car engines can handle it fine so can inboard boat engines...all outboards,atvs...small aircooled engines can have problems running on it, newer bikes are suppose to be able to run on it, 2 strokes have problems at the 10% especially the outboards

    +Victor Martinez Most likely it is. You probably have dirt in the carburetor bowl that is blocking one or more of the carburetor jets or passages. A full dis-assembly and cleaning is needed. Re-assembly using the service manual to set it back to the factory specs and that should cure that problem.

    +Victor Martinez Putting a straight pipe on will generally cause your air/fuel mix to be lean. You will have to jet a little richer. This could be your problem as well

    Yes it happens to be a mikuni carburetor. Try driving out the pin with a small pin punch and a brass hammer. Be VERY careful doing this.

    I am not familiar with that machine/carb. I would have to look into it. You sure your adjusting the idle speed adjustment? "Like" my facebook page and comment there. I an respond to you easier over there. The links are on my channel page.

  • @thejunkman

    Your on the right track, but you probably don't need a rebuild kit. Your problem is probably just a combination of poor fuel, dirty fuel, partially clogged jets or passages. Your "flooding" problem is probably a lean mixture problem from one or more of the the aforementioned issues. I can rule out a sinking float as you didn't state that the carb was overflowing out the vent hoses or being wet in the air box. Hit me up on Facebook for an easier way to converse.
