Carbon Steel NDT Mag Particle (Testing the NDT Guy)

►SUBSCRIBE for new videos every Monday and Friday: goo.gl/FRdNss
Today we're having a little fun trying to create some cracks and testing the NDT guy to see if he can detect some unsavory welds! We put a solid piece of copper on top of our root pass and ran a cap over it. In doing so, we are trying to create a series of micro cracks and see if the NDT guy can pick them on with a Mag Particle NDT test.

    Hi Bob. One question, how come adding a copper wire to the weld causes a crack, but the copper coating on MIG wire is OK? Is it just to do with the amount of copper included? Thanks, always appreciate your teachings.

  • @ExtremeBlastoise

    @ExtremeBlastoise

    The coating is less than a micron thick, some bacteria are thicker than that. Its either a tiny amount of copper, or rust particles in your welds.

    I work in the petrochemical and lubricants industry and I see ndt inspectors doing Magnetic Particle Inspections on the welds of Vertical storage tanks. I see the magnetic particles are in powder form in this video, will this not fall off the vertical tanks when applied? apologies for the ignorance I am inexperienced. any guidance ?

  • @ILLMATIC2222

    The powder is magnetic, meaning it while "stick" when the inspection equipment introduces a magnetic current into the welds of the storage tank.

    Question for anyone with an answer: I briefly worked at a factory that had welders (I was not one, I know nothing about it, hence me being here 😊). One day while a guy was welding, he accidentally stuck something into his hand and it caused his hand to inflate like a balloon. It was at least double the size. It looked horrifying! I always wondered what exactly happened. What did he stick in his hand? I never got to ask. Thanks!
