BMW F20 engine N13

How far I went to understand the reason why the car doesn't start or crank? Is the reason; dead DME, FEM unit, battery, short circuit or integrated supply module?
00:00 Intro
- The car worked great about two weeks after the timing chain change!
- The engine does not crank or start
- Various check control messages will be displayed
- Driving stabilisation failure
- Flat Tyre Monitor (RPA) failure
- Starter / ignition failure
00:55 Fault diagnosis with ISTA-D
- A total of 65 fault codes !!
- Main fault code: S0392
- No communication possible with engine electronics
- Other modules have CAN faults stored due to missing messages from the DME
- Let's look a little more closely fault codes
- Main suspect: power supply for DME.
- It would appear that the DME is not receiving power
- Or the DME itself is faulty!
- Reset engine control unit DME
- Check voltage supply, integrated supply module
- The engine control unit is not responding
04:44 Check all fuses
- from the trunk, engine compartment, REM unit and also FEM unit
- Replacing the battery did not help with this problem!
05:24 Diagnosis Integrated supply module
- Let's take a closer look at the Integrated supply module,
- It supplies power for DME
- Check that the relays of the Integrated supply module are in ok
- Measure resictances from relays from integrated supply module:
- DME main RELAY, Valvetronic RELAY and
- RELAY for the ignition and fuel injection
- Resictances should be approximately 230 Ohm
06:16 Dismantle the Integrated supply module
- check the fuses from inside the power distribution box
- Dismantle with heat gun and sharp knives
- Carefully! Do not cut too deep to avoid damaging the circuit board!
- The power distribution box contains fuses and relays
- Normally, If one of the fuses or one of the relays is faulty,
- the complete power distribution box must be replaced
- They say that fuses and relays cannot be replaced separately!
- Remove the circuit board from the housing
08:48 - Remove FEM front electronic module
- Liquid found on the FEM unit connector ?!
- Let's take a closer look at the FEM module!
- Remove all connectors and loosen red lock
- Unlock top positive battery cable connector and disconnect battery positive lead
- Release bolt and remove control unit
09:52 Dismantle FEM unit
- Remove fuses and do not mess up the order of the fuses!
- The protective film on the circuit board has melted at one point
- PIN 1 is for engine start signal from FEM to DME
- There's green liquid in plug connector!
- FEM unit back in place!
14:10 Measure voltages from components and sensors
- Measure the voltage from the DME engine control unit body
- At this point I started to doubt the DME unit,
15:48 Dismantle engine control unit
- At this point, I decided to order a used DME motor control unit!
Let’s continue with the next episode! Stay tuned!

My purpose is to encourage people to do things themselves!
Plus, this is a nice hobby for myself and at the same time I have the opportunity to save a lot of money by doing all the maintenance myself!
I’m not a professional with cars or motorcycles, I just want to learn how to do things myself.
If you do this service yourself, always check the correct instructions in the official service manuals. This is just my way of doing it!

Water go inside on cable between front window and plastic cover that supposed to seal... go more down on cables package and go inside flowing on them. I had the same problem but i catch that and sealed all with silikone

I have the same issue with the same two codes, happened after I got my spark plugs and ignition coils replaced. Car drove 100mm after the change and lost power. The car started twice after that and hadn’t started since. Been 3 months and I still can’t find the issue. Any idea what it can be?

@@Zikiss ok first you should check is ISM cut it open and check if fuses are fine if not replace those fuse and than clear those codes and if those codes are gone you're good to go if not then issue must be in the dme unit i did the same thing

If you didnt have communication to the dme, I really dont know why you spent most of the video tearing apart the power module and fem…. All you had to do was check four grounds at the dme, back probe power wires at six pins (same connector as grounds), check both can networks, and flex ray with scope. Any losses at that point and then back track. Just seems like you took the loooooonnnngggg road for no reason
