Car Wars 6e Buyers Guide - Everything you need for $36

Car Wars 6e is shipping to backers now and it's good. Very good. A classic game now with modern game play. But it's also expensive. In this video I'll give you a quick overview of the game and then go through each of the 27 items and let you know what you may or may not need or want. At the very least you'll know more than you ever wanted to about building cars with cards.

Linked weapons, thematically, are two weapons you can fire with a single firing action. In the old game, they had two separate to-hit rolls. In the new game they're a single to-hit roll, but with more dice - so more potential damage - and, as you point out, they allow rerolls, which normal weapons can't do when attacking.

Really good guide. Can't wait to get my stuff from the KS and play. I'm excited for the big change from the older editions to the new in the ease of creating cars and getting them to the table.

The road tiles set includes all of the counters from the rules box, and the two turn keys. In the rules set they come punched. In the tiles set it's an unpunched chipboard countersheet.

Ooh, I did not realize the tile sets included 2 turn keys - good to know. And possibly worth getting the tile set over the extra rules box if you’d rather have the tiles over dice but still get the extra turn keys.

The $36 spend he recommends is a great way to get into the game if you're on the fence or just want to try it out. You'll still need a way to keep track of armor, speed, etc. without the little dashboard sliders, but life finds a way.

Agreed. Most of those can be tracked with dice. The only thing that is slightly more involved is tire damage and speed for knowing max speed and control counters - but there are already tables that help with that, so it’s an easy $50+ savings to do it yourself.

Oh... the "S" on the shield is a skid mark. That makes sense. I went for a core set and watching this now, the second set of dice from two two-player starters would have been nice.

Agreed - I wish the core would have come with two rules boxes so you'd have the extra dice and turnkeys. As is, it's better to get two 2-player sets than 1 core since for a like $7 more you get the second rules box with adds a lot.

Your $36 starter set doesn't include the dashboards...I would definitely consider the dashboards required to play.

They are helpful for play. But 5 six sided dice and 2 ten sided dice replace the sliders. Then you just need a table to map tire damage and speed to how many control tokens you get as well as max speed. In other words, dashboards are optional. Turnkey, bases, and dice are not. But if you do want the dashboards, grab a two player starter and you’re all set as a starting point.

@@chrissteele7472 That strikes me as a pretty big pain in the butt, and not a good first experience with the game. After playing it, I would not at all recommend trying to play it in such a super fiddly way. Ex. You don't need the special dice, you can just remember what symbols are on how many sides and assign them numbers...but doing that is a fiddly and worse experience and will leave a bad first impression. It's a bad way for people to introduce themselves to the game. I don't think they could not make such a table on the game in the first place if they aren't able to reference a dashboard, since how many control token you get and for which reasons is not in the rulebook, it's only on the dashboard.

@@DigitalMase While I think your counter example is contrived (mapping dice is way different than tracking numbers), I don’t disagree that you should just get a full stater set. But keep in mind the starter cars have a dashboard printed on them. And printing out the overlays is not that hard if you are trying to play on a tight budget, which is the point of the $36 entry point. But if you have the money to spare, yes, buy the full game, it’s worth it.

It's a horrific rip off, very disappointing. The Original is a fraction of the price, allows for more cars, better customisation and encourages you to use your brain.
