Best, clearest step-by-step instructions I've seen. Thank you!
Ahh I can’t believe I missed it!
First time here, great job explaining the game in a simple way!
Where did you get the binder pages that fit these cards? I am having difficulty finding it.
This game looks great. Your videos are great. You are the bloke who did the fantastic Car Wars video of how to play. We watch that every time we play CW and need a top-up on the rules. You sir are a top bloke.
Thank you!
Now that I understand how this is played, I think one of the most fascinating things about this game to me is how it's basically entirely non-positional. In the vast majority of abstract games, like chess or go or checkers, the positions pieces occupy relative to each other is incredibly important. In homeworlds, positions basically don't matter. All that really matters are combinations.
probably not the abstract for me then as smart positional play tends to be my thing.
This is the worst interface I have ever used. I mean I think really ever. It is so complicated to do the most simple things. Honestly I still can't figure out how to move one effing Bird to another environment when I need to. Too bad because the physical game is so fun this app could've been so much simpler and way more fun. I'm not spending more time struggling with this game. It's managed to suck all the enjoyment out of what is otherwise a very wonderful and relaxing game.
I bought Homeworlds after watching this video. Came back to thank you! It's my all time favorite game! The only downside for me is that I can't find enough people to play with. I simply can't believe this amazing game isn't among the most popular ever. Anyone wants to play on Board Game Arena?
Do you play on abstract play? I play on BGA sometimes, but only live, and I prefer Homeworlds Live for that anyway, but that requires arranging a time to meet on that site and play
@@StrategicGamesEtc Thank you! I'll try Abstract Play.
@@willhelpforfree feel free to send me a challenge I prefer 24/12/72 time controls (+12h/move), but I'm okay with default or something in between if you want something slower. I'm Samraku there.
I miss the original construction rules. Not being able to have bumper spikes and a safety cage makes NO SENSE LOL... 6th ed looks like a dumpster fire... but if it makes people seek out the original and far better rules the it's a good thing.
NOT a dumpster fire. I've played since the 80's.. this version stays true enough, and is so much more playable (no longer takes 6 hours to play a 5 second combat)
It's a horrific rip off, very disappointing. The Original is a fraction of the price, allows for more cars, better customisation and encourages you to use your brain.
It's a shame to see everything dumbed down when it comes to gaming. Also the cost of this is obscene, especially what they charge for cars when you can just pick up matchbox cars for far less... I can't see this catching on, but it does make me want to break out the original and design some cars!
Great stuff - thank you for the details!
Is the app different from the Steam version
Can I play with no internet connection for custom game with AI?
I'm gonna check it out for ya buddy 😂. I was looking for a new, not very violent, just pretty (card) game to play with friends and I saw this first on steam. It's now (at the time of writing) at a 50% discount (the normal price for steam is €20). But the app is €10 by itself. So I want to play it on mobile first and compare it to the steam version. To be continued...
To answer in short: you can play offline and change a few settings, but nothing significant, as far as I'm concerned. More accurate info: The game has the option to play against an "automa" player (whatever knows what the difference between AI and automa is), which you can configure with, besides the three normal ones, a "custom difficulty". And besides the "automa" player (which can't be replaced with "normal" AI) there is an option to add up to three AI's, each configurable in three different difficulties. But, these can't be customized (as much) like the "automa" player. So you can add up to four opponents, making a total of five player games. I suppose the "automa" is different from AI because it is more configurable. But really, it's just AI, isn't it...?
I found out what the "Automa" entails: it is a game mode you can also play with the physical deck of cards, so not an actual AI. It is designed around the idea you can still play the (physical card) game when nobody else wants to. But because the app allows AI to play I'd say it is not really the way to play, unless you really like the "automa" game mode.
I have to say that the design rules in the original are more fun and the game seems less complicated than this revamp. I say stick with the original, it's cheaper and looks to be waaay more fun.
Cool playmat! Did you get that custom made? What about the tin you carry the game in... can't seem to find a 4" tin like that. I have gear envy now 😂
Hey, do you remember the extensions prices ? (Leaders and cities) Thx
Great video ❤
In your partial cover example.... would the automatic defense count only from an attack from the yellow cars left side to red, or both the left side and front? The front arc doesn't pass thru the cover, but does that matter...?
When checking cover, the sides being fired to and from don't mater. If you can draw any line from any part of your card to there's that crosses cover, you have cover. Checking cover is completely independent from checking fire arcs.
Excellent overview video. Thank-you. Are you still playing these days?
Not as much. But that's more because of all the game's I've gotten since Car Wars than the game itself. However it'll remain in my collection for the foreseeable future.
Incredibly upset they only have 7 types of dice, so you can't do the ten-type pool deck.
Thanks, spent a lot of time searching for this info and you laid it all out perfectly and clearly. Thanks!
Thank you! Great explanation and review! Definitely buying this.
I loved the aesthetics of the original game and this one. This is my favorite Steve Jackson game series of all time.
As an original player from the 1980s, it looks a massively different game from the original concept, and a very very simplified version. The cards seem to determine what you do rather making in game decisions. I get the build system with points, in the past it used to use "money", so you could campaign and almost roleplay the game (which myself and friends did). This seems to be a simple "arena" styled game only. Is there any other options than the cars? There used to be trucks, bikes, boats, aircraft and even tanks. Different weapons have different ranges and accuracies (I presume this is done by which dice you pick up, the original used just off the shelf d6) the game reminds me a lot of Battlecars system rather than the original Car Wars. And I'm not criticising the game goes the way people want to play. Though I do see the special dice and expansion packs as a cynical ploy into the CCG genre of milking money from the players. I do find it disappointed that the best point of the game was reviewed as being able to use Hot Wheels cars in the game. --edit I think I've just realised why I would probably not look at this version. It's a board game now, rather than a tabletop game. Originally Car Wars could be a sprawling table top game. (The original release with just the road, you could just roam around your table or floor with the road templates and take out old cards and add them to the road in front. --second edit Also, and again I apologise this is more "This is not Car Wars any more" rhetoric, but the design side used to be a big part of the game. Now it seems they are trying to make it ultra simplified. No top armour or cloud weapons any more from the example.
Totally agree. I grew up with the original Car Wars Deluxe and loved the gazillion different tokens for cars, trucks, boats, oil slicks, potholes, pedestrians, expansions (boat wars etc). The fold-out gridded city and road maps, buildings, etc. The build rules were somewhat complex but made things incredibly interesting and engrossing. This looks like it might be fun as an alternative to Gaslands, but this doesn't seem like the Car Wars I'd want to play.
A really interesting and original list. I am particularly interested in Fantasy Realms and Century Golem Edition. Thank you, I learned a lot
A friend and I are trying 6th edition for the first time tomorrow (we both played 1st edition back in the day), thanks for this video it was really helpful in getting a grasp of where to start.
over complicated version of a game that wasn't broke when it first came out. Play the original because you don't need all those playing cards and ridiculous gizmos to play it.
Great Car Wars content! As an avid player in the 80s I'm really bummed that I missed this Kickstarter. I would love to see you play some games so that I can follow game play better. What are your thoughts on a campaign mode, or is this purely one off game play? In the original the campaign was really what made the game enduring.
Thanks for the video explaining stuff. What size is the play area?
I so much agree with you with all what you said. I've submitted my suggestions to improve the game so many times on Steam forums (and my review there too) but nothing ever changed. Multiplayer was/is horrible with lots of disconnects and issues involving Karma loss (that hasn't been solved yet). UI is clunky and very disorganized. The app could have been SO much better but they focused way too much on the visual and neglected the GUI. Too bad cause the game is neat. Unfortunately it seems that only a few devs are able to nail digital adaptions (CGE, Dire Wolf and Handelabra are the best ones out there)
I much prefer it how it is. The very bottom tab tells you everything you need in a single click. Declunkifying it so it "looks better" will reduce its usability dramatically. All the information you need can be found with only a single click. You can't do better than that on a small phone screen. Text is already as small as it can get. Buttons are technically well below spec.
It's Machete... not Machete... I mean Machete
Forgive me . . . ^ _ ^ I've only just found this video, as I've not been keeping up with SJG in recent years . . . I just watched SJG's Jimmie & Randy's half-hour one-v-one game play video. 1:19 you say you've got a "16pt" build there, so I must be misunderstanding something, as F+L+R+B = (2+3) + 1 + 2 + (2+2) == 12..? Where are the extra 4pts of build? =O So if I've understood (from your 3/4hr "How To Play" vid), the Build pts are "always" 4x the Armor/Crew pts, right? If you've got 4pts for both Armor & Crew, then we're rightly expecting 16pts for Build . . so 4pts are "missing"..? Alternatively, it was "meant to be" a 12pt Build (as shown), then you're "only supposed to have" 3pts on Armor & for Crew..? Have I understood these 6e basics correctly? =D It's been AGES since I played original CW, and I LOVED the Origin Systems "Auto Duel" game based off it, as well as the old RoadWar 2000 games (most esp. for the road combat tactical strategy elements), and then the GEM that was the Interstate '76 game . . . <3 The Maneuver Key and the raised bases -- and the fact you can fit Hot Wheels to them! -- make for very appealing aspects of this 6th Edition. :)
Had the first ziplock bag version, cut out the counters, and played it to death with Ogre, GEV, Wizard, and Malee. Got the big cube as well and looking forward to it. Anyone know why it was expansion 1 and 3? As well as playmat 1 and 3? What happened to 2? Looking to make or find a well designed insert for this game.
I only recently (past couple of weeks) found out about this game but it is fantastic! It amazes me that there is so much depth hidden within just a handful of components and a couple of rules. I appreciate you covering it more in this video, particularly the "strategy 101" for new players (which I absolutely am). I'm looking forward to trying to get better at this game, as it just seems so fascinating.
Yeah I found out about this game 3 days ago after hearing about Martian chess for the first time. For both games hours later. Just tremendous
Thank you! That is remarkably useful. Well done!
I just happened on this. Your explanations are clear, and I would show people this if they were going to play. Excellent!
Nice video by the way, very clear and reassuring for anyone wondering how difficult Ashes Reborn is to learn
I have only just started playing, I have a question regarding recovery. If an ally has 1 health, 1 recovery, how does this work? Once the ally receives one wound it is destroyed without a chance to recover so why have one recovery?
I have literally never played that game, but if it has boost mechanics like an armor that boosts stats, then maybe the recovery can come in handy later???
@@riku1neo I don't know of a unit that has 1 life and 1 recovery. But yes, alteration spells like Root Armor can give your unit +1 life or some such. Then it would be useful. It sounds like a unit that you want to boost.
Where do you get the round travel case version?
There is a Container Store container which Andy Looney discovered was the perfect size for the 36 pyramids needed for Homeworlds. Pyramid Arcade contains a sticker that perfectly fits the lid, but you need to find the container yourself.
Cool video, i came here looking for the VHS' called Car Wars by K-Tel XD
Nice video bro
Thanks for this series. I'll be playing my first 6th Edition game after New Years, and these are a great intro.
Just a heads up regarding 14:30 , the probability for a coin-flip that can be rerolled is 75% to come out in your favor. - - The defense system could actually be better than 75% because if you don't need to use it you can save it for later.
I don't like gizmos. Aside from the balls, everything looks like a prototype. It's also fiddly with too much down time if playing more than 2 players.
Can I play this game offline?
Yes, and I explain it in another person's comment
Hm, realized watching this video I don't have some of the higher cost upgrades (e.g defense system, concealment system). Were those with Miniature Set #2 (not included with Double Ace)?
Those both came with the Uncle Al's Upgrade pack.
Great guide...thank you for this!
Glad it was helpful! As soon as I get the last 2 expansions, I'll do a breakdown for those as well.
Oh... the "S" on the shield is a skid mark. That makes sense. I went for a core set and watching this now, the second set of dice from two two-player starters would have been nice.
Agreed - I wish the core would have come with two rules boxes so you'd have the extra dice and turnkeys. As is, it's better to get two 2-player sets than 1 core since for a like $7 more you get the second rules box with adds a lot.
