CAR VS TRUCK - Rear Underride Crash Test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Crash test car vs semi truck
Modern semitrailers for the most part do a good job of keeping passenger vehicles from sliding underneath them, greatly increasing the chances of surviving a crash into the back of a large truck, recent tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) show. But in crashes involving only a small portion of the truck’s rear, most trailers fail to prevent potentially deadly underride.

I had an accident like these ones many years ago; I was under medication and fool of me I was driving a long distance trip. I must confess that I fell asleep and crashed a trailer, I was driving a 1998 dodge sedan with no airbags, the difference of speed should have been of around 40 mph and the impact was in between 30 and 50% of the front of my car on my side! Fortunately the trailer had a very strong full-width dot bumper, very low and with posts at the outer extremes of it. My car was absolutely destroyed and I got hurt mainly on my left arm but not too bad as I was conscious and left my car walking by myself!! I was extremely lucky.

I saw this happen in real life when I was in high-school about 11 years ago when texting and driving dangers weren't as well known or regulated. The semi truck stopped at a red light and the person in the car was texting and driving going probably 30mph and didn't stop in time. It was fatal, obviously, and scarred me for life. I refused to drive for about 5 years after I witnessed that, and still after I have the utmost respect when I'm behind the wheel because of how dangerous it is to operate a vehicle.

why do American Trucks have so much space between where the wheels are and the end of the trailer? Here in Europe trailers are built in a way that the wheels are as close to the rear as possible

And that right there is the problem but for some reason they ignore it. Sliding axles should always be at the rear of the trailer and only moved forward for maneuvering purposes.

The axles can slide back and forth for weight distribution adjustment.

Last year there was this exact situation with a family I was close to. (If you wanna see the damage look up “Van Horn crash”) A mom was carpooling her kids along with another family’s children when she slammed into the back of a truck. I guess these guard rails didn’t exist and this is the aftermath. It was also found out later that the mom was distracted while driving. 2 lessons learned from that horrible event.

Had a similar crash one month ago. A massive tree fell right before my windscreen whilst doing 35. It bounced back up and struck the windscreen head on, rolling over the roof. I can hardly believe I survived that one.
