That's how The Era of Maldonado was born.

The '74-'95 system would have been extremely simple, had they made one tweak : - Skip 1/2 as permanent numbers .. each team would be given a permanent number starting with 3/4 , 5/6 , 7/8 etc ... - the championship-winning team would have then run 1/2, and F1 would have simply skipped that team's permanent numbers for the year. - if they don't win the title a second time, they revert back to their old permanent number, and the next champions get 1/2. Boom, that simple!

Interesting trivia involving 17: drivers picking their numbers for 2014 were handled one by one based on the 2013 standings. As such, by the time they got to Jules Bianchi, all three of his choices were selected (7 - Kimi, 27 - Gutierrez, 77 - Bottas). He then picked 17, and the rest is sadly history.

Poor Charles Leclerc. He wanted #7. When drivers first gets to get their number, Kimi had wanted 6, but knew Nico Rosberg wanted it because it was both his father Keke and his wife's lucky number, so he pick #7. 4 years after Nico retired, Nicholas Latifi picked up #6.

One anagram of XVII (17) is "vixi", wich means "I have lived", with the implication "I am dead". Thus, 17 is considered an unlucky number. 17 was Jule Bianchi's Number...

Very good video. I loved it when Kimi was asked what number he wanted as his personal brand number when that numbering system came in and he chose the number 7 simply because that was the number already on his car. He just wasn't bothered about coming up with anything different.

I mention that in another Comment. Ferrai choose the 27/28 in the Past, because 27 was the House Number from Enzo Ferrai. I was wondering back in the Days why they have those strange Numbers. I mean there was no 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 ... in the Grid. So why did they have the 27? Later than i found out, it was the House Number from Enzo Ferrari.

Strange, dont you think? To give a Top Team those Numbers, while other Top Teams drive with 5/6 or 7/8. That 27 was Enzos Housenumber is Basic Knowledge in Italy. You will not find one Italian Ferrari Fan, who dont know that.

Karl S. It can impossibly be the reason why Ferrari wore those numbers on the car, if you watch this video Chain Bear explains how the numbering was organised from 1974 until 1995, the reason Ferrari got the 27/28 was because they adopted the number from Williams after losing the championship, which was won by Williams that year, the rule back then was that the winning team swapped with the previous winner the season before. But in this case because williams were so low down at the point the number 27/28 were handed out to them, when Ferrari lost the championship to them they went all the way down to 27/28 because they swapped with Williams, it’s what chain bear explains here as well

Also in 2002 the numbers 18 & 19 weren't present, because: The Prost team was placed into receivership in November 2001, and was liquidated by the receivers in January 2002. The absence of Prost meant that the car numbers 18 and 19 were left unoccupied for the season. Phoenix Finance bought the remains of Prost Grand Prix and attempted to enter Formula One starting at the Malaysian Grand Prix with former Minardi drivers Gastón Mazzacane and Tarso Marques. However, their entry was rejected by the FIA for not purchasing all of the Prost team. They still attempted to race at Malaysia, but race officials prevented them from competing in the event, even with a court appeal. (Yep, I'm a lazy f**k and just copy and pasted that from Wikipedia.) This resulted in Toyota running the numbers 24 & 25 despite only having 22 cars on the grid.

My favourite is 21 and it was last used in 2016 by Esteban Gutiérrez

Maybe no driver picked n°15 because it is still perceived as a "3rd" driver's number ? Nobody would like to be 3rd in a team of 2 as it would clearly put you behind your teammate. With any other number, you can at least pretend to start off a season on the same level as your first opponent : your teammate.

It only makes sense to give the constructors the car numbers. If you have a good year and finish 4th in the constructors I would be proud to have numbers 7 and 8 on my cars. Nothing like bragging rights that you can visualize.

Yup, I'm not a fan of permanent numbers. I guess I get why they did it (the driver keeps getting moved deeper into the car) but...put their frick'n name on the side like they used to. Nobody has enough sponsors (the reason for removing the names and shrinking the car numbers) these days anyway so what's the harm.

I quite like the idea of a modification to the 1973-95 system. Teams pick two consecutive numbers to use permanently, except they use 1 and 2 when they have the drivers' champion. No shuffling or anything: that way Ferrari can always be 27 and 28, Williams can always be 5 and 6 etc.

Our national sport (Slovakia) we feel the biggest passion for is ice hockey. One of our most beloved and talented forwards of all time, Pavol Demitra, played as NO.38 for his entire career. Best known in his NHL years at St.Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks. He was killed in a Lokomotiv Yaroslavl tragedy in September 7th, 2011, just months after finishing his international WC career in Bratislava. Since then, this number has not been worn by any other team representative in WC ground.

So why didn't anyone choose 15? Just a coincidence I'd say.

The rule is very simple (extract form the FIA 2019 Formula One Sporting Regulations, article 9.2): "Prior to the start of the 2014 World Championship season race numbers will be permanently allocated to drivers by ballot, such numbers must then be used by that driver during every Formula One World Championship Event he takes part in throughout his career in Formula 1. A driver’s career in Formula 1 will be deemed to have ended if he does not participate in an Event for two entire consecutive Championship seasons. Any new drivers, either at the start of or during a season, will also be allocated a permanent number in the same way. The only exception to this allocation process will be for the reigning World Champion who will have the option to use the number one. The number that was previously allocated to him will be reserved for him in subsequent seasons if he does not retain the title of World Champion." You choose a number and stay with it for your whole career, no matter what your favourite number is, what is better for your marketing, or whatever. There is some kind of a "loophole": If Max wants to change his number to 3, he needs to retire from Formula 1, convince Ricciardo to retire as well, wait until both numbers are avaliable, then convince some new driver to take number 33 while convincing every other new driver not to take number 3, so when he wants to be back he can't have his old number and would have to choose one that is not in use, then choose number 3. Nothing is impossible, so I will say this is very unlikely. Actually, I would bet $100 with anyone on that move not happening.

Mercedes took both unlucky numbers 44 and 77 so......

Bottas originally took 77 while at Williams; he moved to Mercedes when Nico Rosberg (6, now in use by Nicholas Latifi) jumped ship with title in hand

Well Lewis choose 44 which happened to be one of his karting number and now look.

It's really interesting to me that so many people have favorite numbers! If it was me I would just pick randomly

I grew up with the number system from 96 to 2013 and never questioned it. But when they introduced that permanent number for a drive I thought that was genious, putting an emphasys on the driver and their marketability!

What I want to know is, when they had "permanent" numbers from 1974 onwards, why didn't someone just say, we'll reserve 1 and 2 for the winning constructor and the following season reserve their old numbers for them to slot back in? Would've made so much more sense.

it all changed because Dale Earnhardt in NASCAR was so associated with his number 3 that he started making a shit ton of money on black #3 merch. F1 saw it and wanted a piece of that sweet merchandising action.
