Capture One - Session Culling & Photo Rating Tutorial

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video we discuss the myriad of tools available in Capture One for culling, sorting, and rating your photos. I also talk about the difference between a session and a catalog, and why I prefer one over the other. A somewhat strategy heavy video upfront with hard drive management, so please hang in there!

    I have been using Lightroom for very many years and have just decided to move to Capture One. I was told 'you will find it a really steep learning curve', but I haven't. I find it better designed than LR, more capable in a number of respects and nice to use. But I didn't really get the whole sessions thing until I watched this video - your explanation makes it very clear and I do see now how it could be useful. Thanks.

    Great video! Thanks for your information. Does this method still applies in August of 2021? My question is, how do you move the trash folder outside de session and where do you put it and how to link it to the session. Thank you.

  • @sedetweiler

    Hey there! Yup, all of this is still valid. You can decide where the trash goes easiest by using the Capture One context menu that pops up when you use file explorer. You can click on any folder and select "Set as Delete" and C1 will dump stuff there. Cheers!

    Still wrestling with C1 after coming from LR, but your helping me quite a bit. My question is similar to one already asked. When you click on “capture” it brings up all your images and pretty much fills up the whole screen. When I do the same it will only fill up half the screen, so I am seeing fewer images than what you are showing on your screen. I have clicked on everything I can think of but still not enlarging. Any thoughts. I am on a mac. Thanks

    Does a "session" get overwritten when you import a new set of pictures ? If not, is the a quick way of deleting a session, other than going into "users" and manually deleting it ? Otherwise a drive will quickly be filled up.

    @@ericleszkowicz898 the easy way is to open your file explorer while capture one has the session open you want to modify. locate the directory you want to use for trash in the windows explorer, and right-click and choose Capture One - Trash. You can also do this in capture one by just finding the directory you want to use for trash and designating it as the trash.

    @@sedetweiler On your video, when using the loupe shortcut (ctrl space) your tool does not change. In Mac C1 20, it does. (P default shortcut) and you then need to reverse to the tool you were using before.

    @@Vercoquin64 that might also be because I changed P to be "move to selects" since I was moving from Lightroom at the time. Control (or Command) Space should work at any time without needing to have the Loupe tool active.

    @@sedetweiler Actually Ctrl space does not. And neither does cmd space, which is by default attributed to spotlight on Mac (global search) and to Siri (long press). I could not get it to work either by changing the spotlight shortcut. Could not find either a shorcut for cmd space in C1. Nevertheless, not a big deal, I'll use P.

    I'm confused, I don't see any information for picking the images, say for example assigning an image a color with keyboard shortcuts.

  • @sedetweiler

    @sedetweiler

    most of those are in the keyboard shortcuts menu options, or you can right click on an image to assign a color

    Sorry, I think I initially misunderstood your question. Picked images are those moved to the "selects" folder. There is no flag like in lightroom, as you can do that same thing with stars, colors, etc. The real power comes in moving the images you plan to keep out of the crowd of images you can delete in the future.

    Based on what you were saying, I think I'll love the exporting/recipes options. I've make my own exporting automations (we have pretty similar workflows), previously with Photoshop Droplets and Automator on mac, but I've actually been moving to a mobile editing workflow (Affinity Photo on iPad Pro 12.9. SUPER excited for PS for iPad), and so I'm currently using Siri Shortcuts to automate my exporting process.
