Capture One Pro Tips - Version 21.3 Upgrade Guide - In-Depth: Magic Brush, New Exporter +more | 14.3

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Welcome to the latest Capture One Pro 21 Update (Version 14.3) - introducing: Magic Brush, the New Universal Exporter Tool, Catalog Improvements and Synchronisation plus Leica & Fuji Tethering Enhancements.
In this video, we take full, in-depth look at the new tools and functions within the latest release and how to get the best out of them once you’ve upgraded to software version 14.3 of Capture One 21:
Magic Brush
A new way to make hybrid mask selections based on similarities in areas of your images.
In this session, we guide you through where to find it, what each of the settings means for your selection and how to get the best out of the new tool.
We look at how tolerance and “Sample Entire Photo” can have a dramatic effect on the final mask, across three different landscape examples.
Using the “Refine” slider on the Magic Brush, we discover how being able to define different edge feathering on different areas of the same layer can actually make this tool very powerful for complex scenes.
Limitations are covered - from non-magic-erase through to examples of images where Magic Brush isn’t the right tool, and Luma Ranges or Colour Selections should be used instead for better results.
New Universal Exporter
Process Recipes have moved! Along with the traditional “Export…” options, Recipes and soft proofing are now all combined into one unified Export dialog box for a consistent approach.
Similar in style to the latest “Import” screens, the new Exporter allows for both universal output folder selection and recipe-specific locations to be set, along with sub folders and filename variables.
We can now instruct Capture One to overwrite, ignore or append a suffix to duplicate files that are created by the Exporter.
All existing Process Recipe settings are retained, but now hidden from standard view under the “Show All Options” checkbox.
** Update 30th July 2021: For those who need the Output tab as part of their workflow, the team are aware and actively working on bringing back this function: learn.captureone.com/blog-pos... **
Catalog Folder Organisation
Subfolder image counts are now included in the rolled-up hierarchy of folders for catalog users - meaning you can choose to show the number of images either in the folder itself, or in that folder and all of its subfolders instead.
Top-down folder syncing is now able to search and add images from new subfolders - not just those which have already been imported into the catalog.
Synchronisation now gives the ability to launch the Importer for more options.
Changes to Toolbars and Layouts
To accommodate both Magic Brush and the new Exporter, along with future updates, the toolbars have been re-arranged - meaning some tools have moved and others have disappeared.
Leica Focus Nudge
Certain Leica cameras and lenses now have the ability to nudge their focus from Capture One while shooting tethered in Live View.
Fuji Exposure Firing in Live View
The restriction on triggering the shutter while in live view for Fuji cameras has now been removed, and can be fired while tethered and monitoring the image.
Capture One Live (Beta)
For those looking, the foundations of Capture One Live image sharing have made their way into the application, ready for an exciting new set of features to become available in the future.

    I can’t believe finally you can see the contents of sub-folders! Why did it take so long? This was the single most annoying limitation of using C1 as an organizational tool. Also having the option to skip or overwrite existing files on export is nice.

    The breakthrough for me is, that C1 produces DNG files after processing the merges instead of pixel files like TIFF or JPGs. Subsequent editing is then still possible like with any RAW file!

    The race has picked up. Cap one and Lightroom have their new feature sets. It makes editing easier. I'm amazed how the editing has been refined. But I have one whiny thought that I hope will not spoil the party. I struggle to use the print option in Cap One. I am confused by it. Can it be made as easy as LR's print module? Paul did you do a Cap One print video?

    Looks like some good new features that will be happy to have and I'm sure they'll help speed my workflow. But at the same time I wish they'd put more resources into speeding up the application and bug fixes. I have a brand new iMac with upgraded specs and CaptureOne still feels slow to me most of the time, even while working off of an external SSD with USB 3.1. And Luma Range is so buggy it's usable for me. I've even seen it crashed twice in your videos. I will never argue with new features, I just really wish they'd fix the bugs first.

    I wonder if some tweaking has been done to the Dehaze tool under the hood because I am suddenly able to use it without going intensely overboard with the results? It seems much more subtle now, or is it just me that’s gotten used to it better now...?

    Hi. Good stuff, thanks for the post. Would you say that Capture One Pro is capable of doing -- in real estate interiors photos -- everything that PhotoShop can do. For example: masking/painting in or out color shifts on a white ceiling ... and, say, revealing some of the ambient layer? Also, combining, say, an ambient shot with a flash shot and a 'window pull' ... and then do the masking out/painting in to make color reflections that are off? Thanks so much for a reply. I really don't want to have to learn PhotoShop just for doing these adjustments ... and I only have SONY alpha camera. I don't need anything else, since I'm only in doing real estate interiors that need these typed of adjustments. Cheers and thanks again, Chuck (NE Florida) : +)

    Great video. Is there a way, when exporting, to have the exported files(s) be added automatically into the catalog like Lightroom does? I am in the minority that export my finished raw out to a tiff so that my edits are safe forever and so when I export I want that Tiff to show up in the catalog ready for adding metadata to and at the moment I have to use the Synchronise function to do it.

  • @Paulreiffer

    @Paulreiffer

    3 жыл бұрын

    If you "Edit With..." they'll appear alongside the raw, but if you export, no - they won't automatically show until you synchronise that folder. (As not everyone wants their exports to show in the catalog - including me!)

    @@Paulreiffer Thank you Paul. Yes I am in the minority that works in this way I think. I don’t like to entrust all my edits to a particular catalog system whether it be Lightroom or capture one. I like to have them saved out for future proofing. Only downside is for every raw photo I keep in my catalogue there will be a tiff as well so I’m bloating my catalogue with many more photos than some would deem necessary.

    Helpful presentation, thanks. You didn't actually say so (unless I missed it) but I presume that once you have created a mask using he magic brush, it is then just a mask like any other and so you could use the Luma Range feature with it?

  • @Paulreiffer

    @Paulreiffer

    Hi Ian, Yes - absolutely, it's actually creating a mask just like any other, so you can still apply a luma range (and refine, etc) on top of what's created by the magic brush too - albeit at a global level for the layer.

  • @Paulreiffer

    @Paulreiffer

    3 жыл бұрын

    Kind of.... (ish). So, the Style Brushes have their (normal) brush type stored with them. You'd effectively need to start the style brush layer with a normal brush, and *then* use the Magic Brush on that layer. So, click a small dot to create the style brush layer and then any of the masking options (inc. gradient filter) are available from that point onwards...

    @@Paulreiffer I did a comment about the new export tool which I found on one side quick and great for small project, but a pure catastrophe for bigger project/pro. This comment has been removed. I confess that I thought it was from your behiave. But sure, could just be KZread which does not like negativ comment on commercial products. So excuse me for that. You can find more on my thinking on the CaptureOne Forum / Feature request. support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/4404489002641-Export-tool-is-broken-for-advanced-users- I would be very interrested to get your opinion about that! Let's keep debatting: What do you think of the new export tool for pros ? As an example, exporting up on different sub folder based on token into a root output folder is not possible anymore in "one click". The same action which tool 10 seconds before, will not take 10 seconds to 5 minutes depending of the complexity of the project. Moreover, "on set" you can not pause the batch anymore. -> I have the feeling a lot of pros/technicians/operators are in trouble and won't upgrade.

  • @Paulreiffer

    No comments have been removed - so no idea where you posted it, but it wasn't here. I don't see the new way of working as a "catastrophe" - but that's based on my own workflow, which is fine with the new setup (and quick access to Export with Previous that's still available). I'd also consider myself very much a "pro", so making this a "pro vs amateurs" issue, when it's actually down to how an individual's workflow is set up feels a little flippant. The thing with this is that while one group may (do) feel it's a step back, others may have a different opinion. I understand people have built a familiar workflow around the previous toolset - but with any and all new features, changes, enhancements, there are some who love them, and others who don't. I know some level of feedback has landed with the guys in Denmark around specific use cases, but also remember there are high numbers who are writing that they love the new interface too. Whether Capture One decide to build something in future that delivers more flexibility for both groups, I couldn't predict - but for sure, the feature request and support system are the right place to put your thoughts if it's something you feel strongly about.

    OK. If I'm using sessions what is my default export location? If I set Output from within session 1, and then move to session 2 will the default location be output session 2 or will it still be output session 1? At long last locations being linked to recipes is a good idea. Will I still be able to use tokens to set subfolders? I ask because I will now have "legacy" recipes (e.g export to a folder: named-collection_date_creator_copyright) - will they still work?
