Captain Cook Monument Hike and Snorkeling on the Big Island of Hawaii

www.jordanoutside.com/captain... We got to hike to the Captain Cook Monument to go snorkeling on the Big Island of Hawaii. This is a 3.7 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain of 1,272 feet. There's free parking on the shoulder of the road by the trailhead. The snorkeling here is amazing!

100% use hiking books! The hike back is rough, especially due to the lave rocks. But totally worth it!

I totally agree. The snorkeling was amazing, but that hike back up was intense!

How easy is it to exit the water? It looks like there was a ladder in your video, but some folks seemed to climb out elsewhere. Thanks for any more info and the great video!

I didn't even notice that ladder while we were there. We just swam up to the wall and used both arms to lift up to the wall and sit down and then stand up to walk out. It wasn't too hard for me. It was like getting out of a pool without using a ladder. Hope that helps 😃

Did you pack your own snorkeling gear? What do you recommend packing for the hike down and up?

Yes, we brought our own snorkeling gear. We brought water, gatorade, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and some cliff bars. We wore our running shoes which was perfect for this long hike. We do a lot of hiking, but not hiking then snorkeling for hours and then hiking back up. It's definitely a tough hike back up, but it was totally worth it. Hope that helps. 😃

It would be good to specify the best spot to get in and get out. Going there in September.

Is it pretty much from the concrete in front of the monument?
