Capacitor ESR Testing and Comparison

Ғылым және технология

In this video we get into Capacitors and ESR testing. Talk about safely discharging caps and test 4 different meters head to head on the bench with very little editing. some edits are made due to the video length. The BK Precision 879B, Peak Atlas ESR60, Signstek MESR100 V2, and the YOSOO GM328 battle it out on the bench....

    What if you want to measure a capacitor that falls outside the given ESR table? For example, I have a 400volt 80 Farad capacitor in circuit. How would I test that one to make sure it is good using the MESR-100? Or, can it be done at all using this meter?

    Great tutorial. You can also test the resistance and microhenries of the inductors with the esr meter. The reactance formula is 2𝛑FL. That would be 2 x Pi x frequency of esr meter x 100 (uH) Just plug it in. R=0.628 X L(uH) L(uH)=R(ohms)/0.628

    Hi, Thanks for the video. I have several Capacitance meters but I do like the Peak model. The Peak ESR70 also uses the 12v battery. One thing none of these meters do is check for Leakage on the higher voltage caps. I think you had a polarity issue on a couple of the tests but that is an easy mistake to make while making a video. I'm sure you know what your are doing under normal conditions. Oh and yes the audio is low but I cranked my audio to max and was able to hear Ok then. Thanks again.

    For your information your metre is Version 2.0 and not version 1, read the manual you see, you are mistaken. V2 stands for version , it even tells you on the box if you look. look for MESR-100 v2. version 2 operates with a sine wave and not a square wave , page 2 in the manual will confirm that. I still gave you a thumbs up because you sound like a good man

    my atlas esr70 olus measures some capacitors with an esr of 0 and also some with a very low esr but up to 2-3 times its marked capacitance. I assume these caps are leaky and replace them. Not sure if this is accurate or not but I do notice that all brand new capacitors test within their marked value +- their stamped tolerance so I know the meter is working.

  • @ovi_4
    @ovi_44 жыл бұрын

    Good comparative tests but: ESR70 is way way too expensive for what it does (they officially say that the capacity reading is just informative reading and that it is not accurate) so what is left really is just the ESR reading and just for that function is....well simply not worth buying. I would say that if you are serious about electronics BK is the tool to go for. However, to be absolutely sure of a capacitor you will need another piece of equipment (not many people are aware of) is a capacitor leakage tester. I have encountered caps that have reasonable ESR reading and capacitance is within tolerance but when tested but failed the leakage test. Its an important test

    James Rockford, I would use the Peak ESR70 most likely, but also I have always had luck with hvac caps (5-80uf) with the newer flukes. The 87V and the 179 both measure the capacitance well up to 9,999uf. But only some of the newer ones, the older (87III for example) did not read high capacitance at all (mostly for Electronics use) For Hvac checks that’s really handy to use one meter that does a lot. But having the Peak ESR 70 around will always be handy as well. Hope this helps and thank you for your comment.

    Dear Thrifty Tool Shed, question, please. Regarding the Peak ESR+ Meter: ¿is it safe to 'power on' this meter on with the leads connected to a passive discharged capacitor, or a resistor, please? You do this with a charged cap even, and seemingly without any issues. (The reason I ask is that the manual says: "To allow the self protection mechanism to function, always ensure that the Atlas ESR has completed any analysis before connecting the test probes to a component"). ¿Do they mean powering it up (turning it on) with leads attached to component under test? Just wondering. (I own one of these fine instruments and am very worried about damaging it [big deal for me just purchasing one]). Any comments most welcomed. Thank you for making and posting this fine video.

    Hi, thanks for your kind comment! I believe I understand your question. Yes- I would always make sure the meter is powered and self test complete and ready before connecting to ensure the leads to a cap. I also would make sure no dangerous potential is on the terminals of the cap. I don't think the atlas meter will discharge anything safely but a low residual voltage and of course no powered circuit can be tested. I always try my best to have already discharged a cap before the leads are connected and the meter ready to test. Hope this helps.

    Audio is perfect on my pc (via amp tho). Thifty probably knows this, but just in case there should be a 'normalise' function in your video/audio software that gains up the volume... if that indeed is the issue.

    The main feature of the version 2 is the in circuit testing. meaning you don't need to remove the component from the circuit board, there's another mesr -100 meter that is blue in colour and looks exactly the same that one dos capacitance and esr reading its a 2 in one meter , but this one the mesr-100 V2 dos the in circuit test , and the other one dos not . that is the difference , so i think you can make better use of this one better because of the in circuit test. not many esr meters ar capable to carry out in circuit testing. i think you are getting confused thinking that the other one is better because its telling you the capacitance but if you are working on a faulty PCB than you only need to know the esr and not the capacitance as the capacitance would be be printed on the component/ capacitor that you are working on . and you dont have to desolder any thing to check it. i hope you understand now. for the is circuit test to work the meter has to operate with a sine wave of 100 kilohertz test.

    Honestly sine imho is a bit sick idea bcos in mostly voltage pulse regulators doesn't work on the sine. This signal looks like 2 step stairs rectangular and exactly rectangular signal is the most closelly of the truth, real work of caps. Here this caps work in dangeros, and here his esr is much much important. In many circuits where the caps work for filtering only the power his esr it's not so so important, and can be work over years and years. Also meassure in circuit its not allways possible, often can be falsed by the connected circuit frankly speaking.

    old video but here's my opinion, capacitors needs to be tested several ways, open/short/capacitance/ESR/Leakage/Life Span, and not one single tester can do this testing of this device with accuracy and consistently, for the hobbyist like me we need a reviews of this tester which is which best bang for the buck, but i would say i have an eico bridge resistor/capacitor leakage tester and it was old tube tester that give me accurate and consistent measurement but not esr, although power factor testing is there, just my 2-cents. also some of the meter you reviewed is not as "thrifty" as your you tube name/title indicates, they're quite expensive, the atlas and b&k, thanks from toronto....................

  • @ThriftyToolShed

    Very true. This early video did have a learning curve, including volume level! My goal was to show how well the cheaper meters did for the hobbist like you and me against the higher cost items! I wanted to leave it to the viewers to decide but I did think the cheaper meters did well. And I absolutely agree about the many ways a capacitor should be checked. ESR was just one of the ways and important for higher frequency devices and up until about 3 years ago I did not have a way to check it. Thanks for your comments!
