Join me for another edition of Canteen Cup Tuesday. Today I am cooking up some Depression Era Potato Soup. This was super easy and turned out GREAT. You have to try this one in the woods, on a cold day this will really warm you up!

Just wanted to thank you for this recipe. I made it today, but I used chopped up Turkey Bacon. I’m sure bacon would be great too. Easy to make and exceptionally good!! 😊👍🏻✅

Looks good. The bacon adds to the soup. Add some onion and a couple slices of buttered bread and lunch is served. Good job Matt. I like a small can of evaporated milk in it too

I luv me a good potato soup. Again, ya beat me to the punch. It just won't stop raining up here here. At least it's not snow. I've got a few other easy tips and tricks I like to add to my soup. We are putting up two "deer condos" this weekend on our back forty. So I'll have a dry little cabin to do some videos in.

I'd probably add some garlic and onion powder to that to round out the flavors.

In the old days, we mashed up a few potatoes to thicken the broth.

I thought about depression era recipes myself some time back but not necessarily canteen cup. My parents both grew up in this time. My father said if it wasn't for their fishing and trapping they would have starved to death. My mother grew up on a farm so they were a little better fed.

I went out to do a Canteen Cup Tuesday today and had so much fun looking for a good spot that I ran out of time for cooking. LOL!! Wish I had a bowl of this out there in that rain today, Matt. Potato soup is one of my favourites.

"What's "taters", precious? What's "taters", eh?" " Po-tay-toes! Boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew. Lovely big golden chips with a nice piece of fried fish." 😄

Lol...they are taters in the south...
Nicely done. The powdered milk would do well just as is; put some in the water and it would reconstitute. The potatoes will add their own thickener with the starches from the potatoes being cooked out, so continuing to cook them down past fork tender would facilitate that. The bacon grease is a great idea, but there's nothing like butter. Bacon grease needs on refrigeration, so if you put the bacon in the grease after it was cooked, you could preserve the bacon in the grease. Cheese is always a good move. What cheeses can you pack in that don't need refrigeration?
@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival

Thanks! You can really dress this one up any way that you want. You could always bring along some cheese wedges that are already wrapped...like the little BlueBell cheeses
Well now I'm going to have to go and search Depression Era Cooking. Time for some Hobo camp cooking. Oh and the soup looked great!

I’m old.... we called that “dinner” when I was growing up. Mom used milk and butter.... we ate that so much that in my adult life, I have NEVER eaten it again. I don’t hate it, I just have no desire to eat it...... until the next depression I suppose! 😉 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

It probably would have thickened up more if you cooked it another few minutes AFTER adding the milk and corn starch slurry!
@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival

Probably so. At least thats what Martha Stewart says lol
Ah yes, but mash it up some with a fork some, add the cheese, and a little garlic. Add the milk and cornstarch (stirred first) while still cooking on the fire to thicken it up some more. Are you going to camp anymore this fall or winter?

Researching the depression era of recipes is always so interesting. They even had ketchup soup whereas you use ketchup packets and water to make free soup. Add some free salad croutons and you'd be set. LOL. Also Haluski, what I call Poorman's Stroganoff, is awesome. I make mine with both butter and bacon fat. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zq1tqKybfcm_j5M.html

Ok so all good but just not liking the idea of stiking a plastic spoon in anything very hot and . Some years ago I watch someone stick a plastic spoon to stir in a small pot and it came out warped and an ex co-worker stir hot coffee with a plastic spoon and similar thing happened. From Broward County, thank you for the video. Peace.
