Ойын-сауық

Canon have released a new lens in the RF range, the new Canon RF 35mm f/1.4 L lens and this is absolutely a beautiful piece of glass. Coming in a lot lighter than the EF version, this is still able to produce stunning images and is perfect for photography and videography alike.

Just me, or is there an odd amount of vintage-esque "swirly bokeh" happening with this lens? Not a complaint, but it stands out for sure, especially comparing to the old EF 35/1.4 II

Looks like a counter-point to GM Master Lenses from Sony system, I do thinks it's the way to go. Imagine a series with Leica M flares and autofocus from Canon ? That would be freakin lovely.

@@PALALALALALALA unfortunately, I have no reason to believe this is Canon chasing some vintage optical formula, it’s just a combination of the compromises that come with making this lens this size.

I have the RF 35 1.8 and find the IQ stunning, despite its being an inexpensive non-L. I was wondering if you tried it and how it compares to this 1.4. I do no video, and so I was wondering if it would be a waste of money to buy it.

May I ask you, does the image quality compare to the EF II version in terms of subject separation. The glass in the front of the new lens looks really small. The EF version was perfect with a certain "depth" and "pop" to its subjects. I assume it does the same.

Yes absolutely. It's still 1.4. The new one is superior in every way from what I can see in product demos, especially for border sharpness.

Thank you for the review. Although you didn't mention vignetting, shape of the bokeh, distortion, flaring and many other things. How does the lens perform in these regards?

Thanks for the video. Sorry to see Canon has built in compromises to an L supposedly for stills and video. The fact that the aperture ring is not BOTH clickable and declickable is one such compromise. Are there any others that impacts the performance for stills only shooter? Nobody seems to be fleshing that out. Sony’s GM lenses don’t appear to have this type of limitation. Right now I’m not sure I will replace my EF 35/1.4L II that I adapt to my EOS R5. Take care.

Coming from a Fuji shooter. It’s a shame the aperture ring (iris ring) isn’t usable for photos, such a waste. But I guess that’s their reason not to have it clickable. Maybe they will update this with firmwear with enough requests.

Coming from Sony GM lenses, the choice to have a click-free aperture ring without the option to turn clicks on seems absolutely insane!

@mousbleu stops it from turning to a random aperture in your bag for one thing. Also means you can change it on the fly and add a stop with three clicks without needing to look at the ring.

The macro setting is worse than the 35mm 1.8, and it doesn't have a built-in image stabiliser like the 35mm 1.8.
