Tony & Chelsea review the AMAZING new full-frame mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS R8. The Canon EOS R8 has a 24 megapixel sensor, 40 frames per second (FPS) with the electronic shutter, a fully articulating flip-screen, full-width (uncropped) 4k/60 video that's PERFECT for vlogging. It has human and animal eye AF and is AMAZING for landscapes, travel, sports and wildlife. It's a hybrid camera that's great at everything!
It does have a few drawbacks, though. Tony and Chelsea cover the strengths and weaknesses of the Canon R8 and give you some alternative suggestions, including the Nikon Z5, the Canon RP, the Canon EOS R, the Canon R6 Mark II, and the Canon R7.

    I moved up from the 6d to the RP after 10 years, mainly because it was another entry-level full-frame camera. I was happy with it until I read about the eye detection in the R10, so I got that camera as a backup/wildlife body. I was fairly happy with those, but now I shoot more short films and my group always wants me to use their LOG cameras. All the different cameras have started to become too much. I've started fumbling for buttons. So I sold the RP and the R10 to get the R8. I love it! The image quality is amazing. It's Full-Frame, has eye detection and fast fps for wildlife, and shoots LOG 4k with no crop. It checks every box for me. I know it lacks joysticks and buttons and IBIS, but none of that matters to me. I use the rear screen joystick feature to move my focus points and reprogrammed buttons for what I need. I love this camera and hope to have it for 10 years like my 6D.

    I bought a mint 6D a couple years ago as my digital upgrade for full frame. Great color and good dynamic range from that sensor, in a chassis that's not huge. And of course its AF tech is from the 1990s (and not even the best of the 1990s from Canon). I'm tempted by the R8 for the AF improvement alone.

    @@thenexthobby The autofocus is pretty nice. My method for the 6d was always focus on an eye with the center point and then reframe and shoot. I got a lot of really great pictures that way, but this auto focus now is on another level.

    I have the R8 and it has been a great upgrade from my RP. Not that it's that important, but one thing I think you may not have mentioned about the Z5 is that it comes with IBIS, which none of the other Full Frame camera's in this video have.

    I didn't know about the lack of IBIS with the R8 until digging. Makes sense as a more or less derivative of the budget RP, with better video functions, but with the Z5 going for about $1000 (but Z5 has 8 bit 4k30 with a DX crop), I don't find it acceptable for any FF body to lack IBIS in 2023. But if it's not a feature people want to pay for, it's not an issue.

    If Nikon could do a $1500 FF with full 4K 30 10bit and their latest AF, and 20+ photos per second, that could beat everything else in that price range. So a Z5 II could be an interesting offering.

    The R6 m2 transfers files flawlessly for me. If you connect it with Bluetooth first soon as you open the app, it's already connected with Bluetooth and you just click on view images which starts up the Wi-Fi connection. I never had issues with the R6 either though the 5 gigahertz is much nicer. I've also used the app to update the firmware and it is lickety split transferring the file over

    I find the app fine for transferring a few to maybe couple dozen photos at most. Which is usually fine because i'd mostly need it for grabbing a couple picks from the shoot and do my real serious work sitting down in lightroom. Its not good enough for a full professional workflow, but then again neither is grading jpegs on your smartphone.

    For file transfer I always use a 3rd party app "Camera Connect & Control", does RAW, transfers in the background, marks the photos already transferred and most important, just works. Don't know about the WiFi in the R8 but in the R5 it's fast, 40MB RAW takes about 6 seconds at 500mbits.

  • @Toamserippa

    Correct me if I'm wrong. The dynamic range when using the electronic shutter vs the efcs should technically be the same. The sensor does not loose the ability to take in light, but the AD Conversion gets cut down to 12bit vs the 14bit with efcs. So the actual range is identical, but the steps between black and white are reduced. Edit: Also thank you so much for dedicating 5 Minutes of this review to talking about the horrible state of file transfer and Wifi App. Going out with my camera is so much fun. When I travel back home via train, I like to scroll through my images and maybe even share a few already with my phone to friends. The App makes that process so incredibly slow and boring, that I usually get frustrated and wait until I get home.

  • @AVerkhovsky

    @AVerkhovsky

    Dynamic range is not just the ability to take in light. It's the brightest intensity that could be correctly recorded by the sensor divided by the darkest intensity that it could reproduce over the noise. 12 bit conversion reduces the accuracy in the darkest intensities, therefore reduces the dynamic range. However, this is only noticeable in the darkest shadows at low ISO, at high ISO there is practically no difference.

  • @onlysublime
    @onlysublime Жыл бұрын

    The way I would view the RP is that it's a fantastic studio camera because in the studio, you completely control the environment in terms of things like the lighting. it can produce some phenomenal photos in controlled environments. Its biggest weakness is dynamic range but in a studio environment, that's not a factor at all. In an outdoor environment, you can mitigate the DR limits by using flash (expose for the highlights and use the flash as fill). Good photographers are adept at flash anyway because flash gives so much flexibility to your photo taking. The RP can never be used as a run and gun camera because of its speed and its DR limitation.

    I have an R8 and an iPhone 14 (Lightning connector) and an iPad mini (USB C connector). I have a third party battery grip on the R8, so I can't easily access the SD card without removing the grip, which is a pain. So I wanted an easy way to quickly transfer images from the camera to my phone or iPad while in the field, without using the Canon software or wireless transfers, which I agree is not easy to get working every time, especially if you are not connected to home wi-fi. But I found a fairly easy solution, just using a USB cable. Transferring images via a direct cable connection between the R8 camera's USB C port and the phone or iPad or Mac works great, but there are some things to know. For the iPhone Lightning port, you need the Apple Lightning to USB adaptor for photo transfers to plug into your iPhone (older version and newer adaptor versions both work) and then plug any USB C to C or USB A to C cable (depends on what adaptor you have) to connect the adaptor to the camera. That's for an iPhone. But If you are connecting to a device that has a USB C connector instead of Lightning (such as my iPad mini) a high quality USB C to C cable is all you need between the camera and the computing device. I just open the Apple photos app using either method after connecting the camera and the device. Once the pPhotos app is opened, the import button pops up and I select which photos I want to import. (Best to use jPeg images if you want to share immediately.). I believe this direct cable connection may also work with an Android phone having a USB C connection, but I can't test that. The needed cables and/or the adaptor are small and easily stay in my camera bag or pocket.

    I couldn’t get it to work to the iPhone with just a cable. But the Apple adaptor did the trick. My old adaptor is a lightning to usb a port, but I just attached a usb a to c cable on the end of that adaptor and it worked. Supposedly an Anker Usb C to lightning cable model number 514 model will work but good luck finding that discontinued model. I think it has to do with the need to have only one directional data flow (camera to phone) and other cables want to do bidirectional flows. That’s why the Apple usb cables probably won’t work with the phone and why they sell that adaptor. What I found interesting is I didn’t need that adaptor for my iPad mini with a Usb C port. Just a Usb C to C cable did the trick.

    As somebody who owned both the EOS-R and the R6 Mark II (same sensor as the R8), the image quality of the R6 Mark II is heaps better (and surprisingly sharper) than the EOS R. The R was a letdown from the 5D Mark IV as it had more noise, worse dynamic range, and banding in the shadows. The 30 MP on the R doesn't have as much detail surprisingly as an upscaled (in Adobe Camera Raw) R6 Mark II image.

  • @michelecintramika8482

    The EOS R has Dual Pixel Raw mode. In this mode, it takes 2 Raw photos in a single shot. The file doubles in size and you have incredible dynamic range. And regarding the ISO I always shoot with bounced flash at ISO 50 or 100 so I don't have problems with noise. And yesterday I did a test and set it to ISO 25,600 with bounced flash and it was AMAZING! What you need to know is that photography is basically LIGHT. If you use a flash to illuminate your sensor, you won't have a problem with noise even at ISO 25,600. And look for the Dual Raw function. I don't see anyone talking about it. If you shoot in Dual Raw at ISO 50, you'll get insane dynamic range. This Canon R8 doesn't allow you to use HSS because of the lack of a mechanical shutter. This terribly limits the use of speedlight. The Canon EOS R is an evolution of the 5D Mark IV mainly in the focus points of more than 5 thousand collectible points and also the focus in the eye which is perfect. The Canon EOS R is weatherproof and the R8 is not. The EOS R takes online video and records to the card simultaneously. Only the R5c and R3 can do this. You have no idea what you're talking about. They are different cameras for different audiences. There's no way to compare. For me, the R8 is an excellent complement to my EOS R: If I shoot outdoors or with a flash, I use the EOS R. If I shoot indoors without a flash, I use the R8. But if I had to choose just one of those two, I'd go with the EOS R. You need to know the equipment better before you go around saying what you don't know. And you are spreading misinformation on many KZread by copying and pasting this erroneous comment of yours. And I saw this same comment of yours on another KZread. You are misinforming people.

    The Canon R6 M2 supports IEEE 802.11ac (WiFi 5.) Even for a single antenna system on the camera which operates at a 20 MHz bandwidth enables a maximum throughput of 86.7 Mbps or 10.8 MBytes/sec. Thus, a 25 MByte image will ideally take approximately 2.5 seconds to transfer. Of course, there are other factors that affect throughput.

    The R6 II's negotiated rate is 433Mbps, but the fastest transfer is about 25Mbps. That link rate matches the max theoretical 1x1 80Mhz channel width. This is when connected to Aruba access points, 5 feet away with no obstructions. Edit: long story short, the upload feature mostly works but is far from optimized. I’ve found since the R6 & R5 generation came out, once the Canon app is setup and ‘knows’ the camera, the process to transfer is now convenient enough for me to use for low resolution previews at the end of a gig. My phone can see the camera even when the camera is off (via low power Bluetooth), I would never use camera wifi to send videos, but for sending low quality previews to a client at the end of a shoot, it’s very handy. I like to ‘rate’ my fave images in camera with a star, and in the app I have the filter set to show starred images first, and I have the default download file type set to low resolution jpeg, they download 2-3 images per second, so for sending 10-20 previews straight after a shoot has definitely helped me impress clients!

    So sports photography is my largest use case. I went for a Sony sports body years ago when I went mirrorless, and that was the right decision then I think, but today it’s not anywhere like that clear. I’m very frustrated that Sony intentionally hinders the frames per second on their standard a7 bodies. I don’t think many people are cross shopping an a7iv and a9ii today. I think they’re instead looking to Canon, even without the stacked sensor, because of the higher fps. I’m already heavily invested in the Sony ecosystem, and I do like the fact that Sony allows third-party support, but if I were starting over today from scratch, I might be looking at the Canon bodies instead.

    The A7iv is not only crippled by its low FPS (8 FPS actually usable) but also by its totally unreliable autofocus for moving subjects. Tony found a hit rate of 90%, Mathieu Gasquet found 79% but that is for a person walking. When it comes to running, my personal best experience is 10% fully focused plus 60% acceptable in tracking mode. Just shot a race, took 10 frames of the winner, none of them is sharp. What keeps me there is the huge loss (A7iv + 2 GM2 zooms) of shifting systems.

Honestly, I a have a very nice Sony camera but I almost never take it out. I went to Hawaii and I didnt take it. It's just too big to lug around when I have a really good camera in my pocket, that can take pictures and post them anywhere in seconds. If my Sony could integrate seamlessly with my phone, like if it was just an extension of the built-in camera, then I'd probably start taking it more places. Why dont these companies figure this out and put more R&D into this?

    IDK. I think while the R8 does have some impressive specs, I think the Nikon Z5 still is the best value FF camera. It's not based on the latest tech, or the fastest sensor/processor, but you do get a lot for your money (especailly now it's $999 on sale). I mean you get dual sd card slots, IBIS and USB charging/power. The IBIS and dual card slots are probably the two biggest things going for the Z5 to keep it from your typical "cheap" FF camera. Even some equivalent APS-C bodies don't have these features. If these features don't matter, then yeah the R8 is probably the next best thing, or possibly the RP at $999 for the body it seems, but that camera is also a bit older and does not include Canon's latest AF routines. I mean the Z5 is not the fatsest camera out there, but it never really was marketed as a video or sports/wildlife camera either ... more a still camera for non-moving subjects like landscapes, portraits, and pretty much everything not relating to sports or wildlife.

My uncle had one in Vietnam. Steve McCurry used Nikon his entire career and is one of the all time greats. It sees common usage among NatGeo shooters. I don’t think that’s the issue. T&C are very wrong about the brand, and their saltiness is unwarranted since even the basic Z5 blows the pants off this supposedly “amazing” brand new R8. It can’t even achieve two card slots lmao

    @@sacredxgeometry I used Nikons back in the film era. I switched to Canon’s superior AF with the Canon 1n. Virtually every sports photographer since that camera switched to Canon. All those photographers with white lenses were Canon’s.

    Great overall review. I’m glad even you found the Canon Connect app tricky! I take product photographs on a Canon 6D using the app on an iPad. It works fine but every so often I have to go through the whole procedure again of naming my camera, naming my iPad and then hopefully connecting it all together. It can take me ages sometimes. I was rather hoping that this was something Canon had worked on with the new generation mirror less cameras but it seems not. I’ll just stick to my 6D for now.

    the 6D and the app was pretty primitive. If you could test out something like the R5 (or the recent modern cameras) with the Camera Connect app, you wouldn't feel like you're missing much (maybe video transfer is still a bugger). Here's the process I use and it's really rock solid. I turn on the camera (the camera had initially been set up with wifi enabled and Bluetooth enabled so once initial setup has been done a long time ago, you forget it thereafter). I launch the Camera Connect app. I tap the Reconnect button to connect the app to the camera. It should connect within 5 seconds but at most, 10 seconds. If you wait too long to hit the Reconnect button, it'll disappear but then you just tap on any button like "Import Images" and it'll begin the connection. No more connecting to the camera's wifi. No more codes. no more typing in numbers. no more remember wifi names.
