    Three primes in one. All F1.8. Mine lives on a 6K Blackmagic. Something rarely mentioned. The size and weight of the lens makes it especially fantastic for hand held manual focusing. It’s long, it”s heavy Use a neck strap, pull the camera out front, left hand under the front of the lens index finger on focus, other fingers on zoom, right hand on controls. It’s stable, smooth and under your full control.

    Hi Josh. Thanks so much for this review. This is going to be my next lens after much deliberation and research. I currently shoot on a Canon 80D and R7. I make youtube videos and also shoot stills for events and food photography as a side hustle. It has been an interesting journey going from an entry-level (400D) to enthusiast (80D) to mid-range (R7). I can't justify the expense of an R5 or R6 (yet). Ultimately I would like to run the R7 and get an R6 Mark ii as I think they would compliment each other nicely. I do want to move into creating more video so this lens seems to be a great option. I have found that the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM works really well on the R7. I have the Tamron 35mm 1.4 SP which pairs beautifully with my 80D. I recently shot a cooking competiiton and having the two-camera set up worked great. Can't wait to play with the Sigma 18-35 and see how it performs on both bodies. Thanks for your review!

  • @Josh_Sattin

    Thanks! Background blur or creating a shallow depth of field comes from three things: aperture, focal length and distance from camera to subject. I can't tell you how blurry your specific background will get, but I would recommend using the longest focal length you can (move the camera to get the right framing) and shoot at the lowest aperture.

    Hey Josh, I am shooting with a bmpcc 4k Most of the time with the speedbooster and the Sigma 18-35. I'm totally happy with this combo in 90% of the time. But in Low lights it stinks. I also hate how Long it takes to switch to Gimbal. So sometimes i just use my old Canon 80d on my Gimbal or as b-cam. So i want to get a better b-cam and i really love the R7. I am also thinking about the a7sIII but not only the Cam is much more expensive, also i have to get new lenses as well... Would you recommend the R7 as a b-cam or would you rather save money a little longer and directly upgrade to the a7sIII + new lenses?

  • @vinjass
    @vinjass5 ай бұрын

    I'm about to get this exact combo after a year of saving!! It looks amazing. One question though and I've been battling these past weeks, I just cannot find a budget gimbal to pair this up with, someone recommended the Ronin S but that's too expensive for me right now, I searched more and I was about to buy one called Feiyu AK200s but the company told me this combo might be a bit too long for it so they recommended another one in the same range as the Ronin, so I'm back at square one, the length seems to kill it for me at my current budget, those pro gimbals are too much. If only Canon would let Sigma make the RF version of this lens, it would solve everything; no adapter needed, smaller and with all the new technology, it would be a beast.

    I am a little confused by your question. Yes, you can change your aperture on the lens when using this adapter. Depending on the camera, speedbooster and lens it may or may not automatically adjust the aperture down one stop. Easiest way to tell is to open the aperture up all the way and see how it compares to what the lens is rated for. If you open it up all the way on a 2.8 lens it will either say 2.8 or 2.0.

    I am saving up for the Meike VND adapter, the Canon one is just way out of my budget though I did try to win the only 1 I saw on auction. I think it went for $350(can) but at the time I wasn't sure if I would get an RF camera soni let it go past my $200 bid. I'm figuring it would save me money considering all the ranges of lenses I am planning and getting a threaded filter for everything from 55mm to 90mm is just pricier by comparison.

    It seems like you have a long list of potential situations that you will need your camera for. Unfortunately I don't do much photography, but most people usually use somewhere around 50mm or 85mm on full frame for portraits. You probably won't need the Meike VND adapter unless you are planning on doing video. Some people like very wide for landscape as well as a telephoto. If you don't need wide then something like a 24-70 2.8 might be more versatile.

I mean, outdoor I could not hear it and indoor was only slightly noticable when you werent talking and it's an almost dead room. So with just a small bit of room noise or as outdoors with birds, trees and cars moving etc. It wouldn't be noticable, I believe.

    I don't have an R to compare, but I have owned one and shot MANY hours on it. If I was more than 50% video I would definitely chose the R7 over the R. 10 bit 422, Clog 3, more dynamic range, oversampled image, and better autofocus is a huge win. I don't really care so much about full frame. Most cinema camera are S35. If full frame photo is important to you then maybe keep the R.
