    Thank you for watching! im glad you found it helpful. I wont be doing the same test for the Electronic shutter. I originally did this testing for myself to solve the issue i was having of a slower shutter than expected. I was also curious to see if there would be artifical bottlenecks placed on the camera, which i was happy to find none. At the end i figured it would be useful to the public and made the video. I would expect the results to be consistant with the Electronic shutter. Keep WIFI off, use an LP-E6N/LP-E6NH battery above 50% and you should get the R5s fullest speed.

    I should also add it doesn’t appear you were focusing in between frames and that plays a factor. That’s the reason some EF lenses can’t achieve max FPS, because they physically can’t focus fast enough. It’s easy to achieve max FPS when you’re shooting still life that doesn’t require continuous focus.

    Some nitpickers like to consider the true FPS as as the shots properly tracked in continuous autofocus. I recall Tony did that in a previous video which is kinda a moot point but I do agree for flying birds not having tracking paced for the full shooting speed is annoying (like in the 90D).

  • @kurtissutley1485

    You make a good point but you also make Canon's point of "up to" FPS. Everyone tries to get the best specs for their product. I flew the F-4E in the early 70's and McDonald Douglas claimed the F-4 was a MACH 2 airplane. It was when completely stripped down without pylons or external fuel tanks, which it would never be in the "real" world. Start adding capabilities and computer tasking and this is what you get, a great frame working it's little processor to give you everything it can. Expectation is everything and the source of all frustration. I love my R5.

    @@kurtissutley1485 I love my R5 as well, but I can definitely say I don't like a lot of the marketing "gimmicks" companies are doing nowadays. Like in your example, don't market something that you know darn-near every one of your customers won't be able to achieve because they wouldn't use the product in a manner to do so. But hey, whatever looks good on paper I guess, lol.

    Hi. I am lost about third parties batteries since of course I want to reach the H+ mode and 12fp/20fp speed. I have found a Patona Platinum battery LP-E6NH 2250mAh 7,2V and a generic brand (DSTE), LP-E6N with 7,4V and 2600mAh. Hey Steven, thanks for watching! The tests I performed were in Single AF mode. I was trying create controlled and repeatable test to isolate where and what the bottlenecks within the camera are. I was able to figure out the biggest factors in the camera were wifi and battery type and charge. I figured servo would add an extra variable that wasn't repeatable in the 60+ tests i did. Also it would add the lens AF motors as another variable which could be a bottleneck in itself that has nothing to do with the camera. Hope that makes sense.

  • @thejpegexperience7488

    @thejpegexperience7488

    I did not. I knew flicker would drop the shutter speed to match whatever light was flickering. Which would be to a huge variable to test. Each light would flicker differently and That would be more of a review of lights than the r5. It would be interesting to explore though. 🤔

  • @TubaSolotheHiker

    @@thejpegexperience7488 Yeah my only concern is that where I shoot (high school sports) I usually have flicker control turned on. There is no noticeable difference with the 5DIV but the manual for the R5 says speeds go as low as 4.9fps..(Yikes!). That is a huge departure from 12/9fps you know? Now with that said, if those 4.9fps are all in focus then its not the worst thing in the world honestly but yeah I was kind of surprised at what I was reading in the manual when it came to flicker control.

    High frame rate draw a lot of current out of the battery. - The older versions of this battery are not specified for this current. - If the state of charge of a battery drops, the maximum current drops. All makes sense, for me it is more a miracle 12 FPS is possible with a camera of this kind at all. With some other lenses you will recognize a drop with closed aperture as well. Those older lenses were never specified for such high speed operation.

    Thanks Peter! I appreciate your feedback and agree 12FPS is a wonder. Its honestly the stat that i was most excited about. I agree that results will very when it comes to the lenses but i wanted to know if the battleneck was with the camera on "unsupported" lenses or if it was truely just the quality of the lens. My testing suggests that there is not an artifical block by the camera and is just dependant on the quality of the lens and its AF capabilities.

  • @Methodical2

    Good tests. Canon is being conservative on some of that stuff, which you've discovered. I get 12 fps down to 42% battery life (use battery grip) and then it takes a dive; you can hear it. Also, I I've gone down to 1/800 and still had the blinking green H+. I've gone out shooting and have yet to go below 50% battery life, but I also carry 2 spares, just in case. With that said, I am ok with 8 fps as 12 fps gives too many images. I usually set my fps on DSLRs to 8 fps. I like to modulate my shots, so I am not getting 12 of the same images. To be fair, the 1Ds had qualified requirements to get the max shutter speeds also. I get the max fps with the EF 600 f4II, 100-400II. I get the flashing white with the EF135 f2, EF 85 1.8 and EF 100 macro (non IS) lenses. Is that the 100 macro IS lens? If so, 12 fps make sense.

  • @nedmartin5831
    @nedmartin58313 жыл бұрын

    I suspect you may find the aperture starts to make a difference once you factor in autofocus - the camera is probably having to open the lens up to max aperture to focus, then close it down to your chosen aperture for the photo, then open it up again, autofocus, close it down again, take photo... as many times as it can per second. This is likely to have a considerable effect on the maximum number of photos you can take per second. Or in other words - it would be interesting if you try re-running your tests but with autofocus trying to focus on stuff.

    and to imagine I was complaining about Nikon's marketing when I had my D850, lol. with my D850 I get 9fps even when my grip battery has 1%. what is this? seems like canon hard coded a limit to fps in the camera's software to not cannibalize the R3 sales. I really don't believe canon's lithium battery manufacturing is this bad, that a pack with less than 50% change delivers less voltage. there's no way. they literally nerf their cameras even at this level xD.

    The manual isn’t incorrect, it’s conservative. Had that information not been there and you didn’t achieve the listed FPS, you’d be making this video, ironically, still saying the same thing. I hate to break it tp you but EVERY camera, every brand has limitations on its max FPS. Up to in marketing is necessary because...well, the number listed is the max you can achieve. Where’s the problem?

    Hey Anthony thanks for watching and appreciate your feedback! I agree that some of the items in the manual could be construed as conservative and that's not a problem IMO. The Manual says 1/1000 shutter and my testing was around 1/500, the manual says 60% battery charge or higher in my case I found it was around 45%. Both points being under the "results will vary" caveat which is understandable, reasonable, and to be expected. I think there is value in the testing and information I shared in knowing what to expect in those aspects of the Camera. The information in the manual requiring an LP-E6NH is incorrect IMO when an LP-E6n produces the same results. I don't consider that being conservative but actually incorrect. The manual is also incorrect with the "Maximum aperture, and RF/compatible EF lenses" requirement, This changed nothing for the camera and was glad to find there wasn't an artificial bottleneck placed in the camera to limit 3rd party lenses. I would think this is also valuable information for people to know. With that knowledge they now know that the Bottleneck in FPS would be in the quality of the Lens and AF. Another reason for investing in quality glass. I do mention in the video that there are reasonable expectations for what the "up to" could mean. I use the example of AF, lens compatibility, and buffering as reasons for the "Up to" which is not a problem IMO.I would expect that to be the same in all cameras but I don't think to a reasonable person the "up to" covers battery charge % and Wi-Fi connections which is also a highly advertised feature which happens to be advertised directly adjacent to the 12/20 FPS. I took exception to the marketing because those are important things to know about such a highlighted and important feature of the camera without disclosing the limitations. When I was buying the camera and thoroughly looked for any such limitations they could not be found even on the full spec sheet and at that time the manual was not released on the canon website. I really love this camera, it's easily the best i've ever used. I mention how much I like it and how I am continually impressed by it. I think my criticism of the marketing and limitations on the Shutter is a testament to the engineering behind the camera. It's a workhorse of a camera and delivers on everything I ask of it. Again thanks for watching and commenting Anthony! I appreciate your feedback.

    Nothing earth shattering about the performance versus the quoted specifications. Its the same with my Sonys. What I did notice is that when you fired off that burst saying "check this out", it was shooting noticeably slower than when you actually were doing the tests later on. This wasn't acknowledged or discussed . ?????

    @@thejpegexperience7488 I respectfully must say you're looking at things in a vacuum. When you put out a manual, you can't include, exclude, or dictate what you say based off of one round of testing, one type of scenario, etc. Yes, in your very controlled testing you have favorable results but that certainly doesn't mean the manual is incorrect, and one could argue you're giving someone a false sense of hope. You really needed to do A LOT more testing to come to the conclusions you have. AF'ing on a plant is the most basic and mediocre way to test anything FPS/AF related, and FPS will be largely dictated by how well the camera can achieve focus (if you have your camera set to focus priority). To be frank, I likely take issue to anyone who, as an individual person, would assert that a brand/company manual is wrong and they are right. You should probably do some research into the amount of planning and work that goes into creating a user guide.

    I like the use of "Negative Nancy" :) But i honestly dont think i was negative in this video and that certainly wasnt my intent if i was. I mention how much i like the camera and how impressive it is a few times. My goal was to share results of my testing of the Mechanical Shutter. I think there is value in knowing exactly when and how to get the most FPS out of this camera and where the battlenecks actually are.

    @@thejpegexperience7488 - Agreed. I think your test results were actually very positive. So many people think they need to get the new batteries in order to get these framerates.
