Canon R5 - Dynamic Range in the real World

In this video I show you some photos I captured during a hike in the Austrian Mountains back in August. For those photos I was photographing directly into the sun, so the scenes I captured contain a huge dynamic range.
So how did the Canon EOS R5 hold up in such a situation. Is it really as good as Sony and Nikon now or even better? Well, I cannot directly compare it to their latest cameras, but I can at least tell you exactly what you can expect to get out of the EOS R5 now, when taking landscape photos.

Yaa I mean it's just unfortunate the R5 is bad in dynamic range, especially now I've seen A7S3 footage and comparisons!. I can see the shadow detail is bad, and the highlights are losing detail and low light is just noisy!. It's the Sony A7S3 or the Panasonic S5 or S1H you need if you want good dynamic range!. There is countless comparisons on KZread now that show the R5 dynamic range just isnt there!. I have Sony and Nikon cameras so I'll buy any camera brand that offers what I need so that also includes canon if they create something that suits my needs I'll buy it before anyone goes oh your a canon hater!. Just being objective the R5 is not a good dynamic range video camera.

For still photos R5 DR is only a little behind Sony A7r IV and A7 III (and some Nikons etc. using the most advanced Sony sensors). I don't see the point in compairing to A7s III because of too low resolution for still photography. And when compaired to A9 series R5 has a better DR. (This is because A9 is designed for extreme speed with stacked sensor and has a superior sensor readout time / ES rolling shutter performance than anything else. A9 series 12-bit FF readout is 6ms vs. R5 ~16-17ms vs. A7r IV 50ms and A7 III 35ms.) Typically Canon DR is not similarly balanced around 0 EV than Sony so you are better of for setting EV to something like -1 for example (if doing single shot photos). From DR measurements done by professionals it might first appear that R5 has the best DR of any cameras (at the native ISO). But it seems that this reading is caused by Canon adding a slight amount of forced NR even with "pure" RAW output (also applies to R6/1D X Mk III). So technically R5 doesn't have superior DR compared to the best Sony sensors. Here is a link to one of the good technical comparisons: www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm P.S. I'm at the moment Sony APS-C user but about to upgrade to FF. And it looks like I'm choosing the R5. Sony cameras are really good too, but I do pretty much only wildlife still photography and for that, for my preferences, it looks like R5 is the way to go.

@@mibreit-photo Yes, for a while Canon was somewhat behind Sony in tech (well, the glass/basic AF/ergonomics/durability etc. were excellent). So it's great for the industry development that Canon has made really nice progress and have an extremely competitive camera like R5. Now when the situation is quite even it will push Sony (and hopefully other manufacturers as well) to the next gear. But I think that Canon also has more tech R&D up their sleeve. One design improvement that I see coming is BSI sensor tech. Canon has it in some of their sensors but R5 doesn't have it. BSI brings more benefits for smaller pixels - so not that much at all in ~20Mp FF sensors (extremely good for small/high resolution phone camera sensors). But it's harder to manufacture for large sensors with higher pixel densities - so that's why R5 doesn't have it. With 45Mp FF sensor the change to BSI could maybe provide up to a 1/10 stop increase in DR. It's worth to mention that in some internet sources it's falsely stated that change to BSI was the reason A7r III have about 1 stop (actually ~4/5 stop) DR increase over A7r II. A7r II already had the BSI... But it was badly made (at least in some tested units). And badly made BSI sensor has lower DR than well made traditional sensor. But BSI tech becomes more interesting with something like rumoured upcoming Canon 80-90Mp sensor. But for my use this high resolution is mainly only beneficial if the sensor also includes an option for a native 4:1 binning. This could mean 16-bit sensor readout and about 1,5 stops DR improvement! (In theory it could be 2 stops, but in reality it would be closer to about 1,5.) But this tech will probably be really expensive at first so R5 is great for now 😊.
