CANON PRO 1000 Ink wastage! What Can We do?

The CANON PRO 1000 Ink is not a passive little printer you can just set up and ignore!
It is a beast requiring one very strong dude or more likely two semi strong laddies!
I has many great features that I will explore and report on when I have one here in the print room.
So far I have to rely on other folks who already own it and have been feeding me actual user information.
This has to do with it's scheduled ink maintenance and other situations when some INK will be used.

    Hi Jose, was wondering if you could please advise me? I have the Canon prograf Pro and have just changed the print head. To change the printhead I was forced to replace 8 of the ink that were running low-ish but not empty. I was wondering if these can be kept and used later down the line when the new tanks are empty? Thanks!

    In the video you talked briefly about firmware updates. I had a question related to that. I own a P800 and use only OEM ink. Recently I have been getting a reminder from my P800 printer driver that there is firmware update available for download and install. Previously I have taken your advice to not download and install based on if it's not broke don't fix it. My question is should I stick with my current firmware version since everything is working perfectly or do you think it's a good idea to download and install the new firmware version? Thanks

    Yes! Do not update unless you have a problem that the update will fix! The new firmware has to tell you what it will do to improve your current printer. So don't do it.

    Jose - you can move the printer around as long it is not tilted on its side or placed upside down. This is also confirmed by the service technician. I hand carried my unit to Canon Canada for some cosmetic repair without draining the ink and there are no in leaks. As for the ink agitations, it seems to happen after in intervals to prevent the pigment particles from settling and causing problems. This is actually a very nice feature whereas other printer requires you to physically remove the cartridge and shake them.

    Yes. And it actually has a built-in internal level sensor. How exactly or where does it perform Ink agitation? There is absolutely nothing inside the cart body except the ink valve and a totally empty ink container body. So maybe it takes place internally???

    Belated Happy July 4th Jose! When ink agitation happens, I hear distinct vibration sound coming from the the bottom chassis where the cartridges are installed and near the printheads on the right side of the unit.

    Thank you. That's interesting but someday I would someday know exactly where and how it is performed. I guess Canon likes to keep little things like that a proprietary secret. Thanks again.

    Two days ago, I printed the same image once in my Pro-1 and once in the Pro-1000, both with OEM inks and Canon Photo Paper Plus Semi Gloss, honestly, I couldn't tell the difference, they both look the same to me (gorgeous prints). Where I saw the magic of the Pro-1000 was in an image printed again, Pro-1000 with OEM inks (of course) and Canon Photo Paper Pro Premium Matte, the prints with that combination are fantastic, a tinny bit warmer than the prints on Canon Semi Gloss or Luster papers, but I assume that it is actually the characteristics of the Pro Matte paper which is a bit warmer paper.

What is your experience with maintenance such as I discussed in this video. What behaviours do you see that differ from the PRO-1. I would appreciate it immensely and so would the viewers. Thanks in advance.

    Jose Rodriguez o yea, of course!!! I didn't print that much yet (I am waiting to put my hands on the ink set from PC ;) to start printing the heck out of this printer) and didn't dig into the printer's function and menu yet either, but what I can tell from my experience is that after installing the first set of inks and initiating the printer, the ink levels went down a lot (about 50%) but it is because the ink lines have to be filled, just like the Pro-1, plus the internal tanks. Also, after few prints the ink level went down even more, let's say to 25% but then it staid there, after that I made some more prints but the inks level doesn't seem to go down any more, it staid stable. I am sure that this printer waste a little more ink than the Pro-1 in the process of keeping the head clog free, but honestly I don't think that the ink waste is much more than the Pro-1, I am really not worry at all about it, and I am also willing to accept that little extra waist to keep this beauty running good. After 2 days or so of not using the printer, it will perform a cleaning cycle and it will start a shaking process (I don't know if it agitates the internal tanks, the actual cartridges or the print head) in order to keep the print head clog free. Going to another aspect of the printer, when I first started doing test prints using standard images (those one to test the printer, no editing done by me), I used Pro Luster and Plus Semi Gloss from Canon and I noticed that the prints where warmer than they should be, I noticed it specifically in skin tones (faces) and also a little bit too contrasty in warm colors tones like oranges/browns, I performed an auto calibration function using Plus Semi Gloss paper from Canon and it solved the problem. Now my prints from the Pro-1000 look so much similar to the Pro-1 in colors and contrast, MAYBE the Pro-1000 is still a tiny tiny tiny bit more contrasty in some prints, but that my be just my eyes that are tricking me. After that, I started making prints with images provided by a friend of mine and man, the results are very good, especially with matte paper from Canon, what a beautiful combination. BTW, I got so lucky with my Pro-1000, I won an auction on eBay and I got it brand new for $600 + $53 taxes + around $35 in gas to go to pick it up. I believe it was a returned item because the box was wrecked, so the cargo company (Cargo Largo) probably had to respond for that and then they sold the item on eBay, the box wasn't even in bad condition for real, it was a minor problem. The printer was brand new and complete with all its accessories, and it is working great so far.

    I have a suggestion on how to get around the waste cartridge container re-use problem. But I haven't tried this yet. I wonder what you think. It's possible to remove the chip from the cartridge with a Phillips screwdriver and then insert the chip into the back of the pro-1000 without the cartridge container. There is a small tube that sticks out of the back of the pro-1000 that inserts into the waste cartridge. What if I placed a small container to catch the waste ink from the back of the pro-1000, while the old cartridge chip is inserted into the printer? Maybe that will by-pass the need to replace the cartridge!

  • @johnguillory7759

    @johnguillory7759

    I could place cotton balls into the small separate container that catches the waste ink.

  • @johnguillory7759

    @johnguillory7759

    I tired this. The printer is saying that the cartridge is full. Probably because the chip is already known by the printer. I've ordered a new cartridge. When it arrives, I will remove the new chip from the new cartridge and insert it into the printer to see if it 'sees' the new chip and lets me print.

  • @johnguillory7759

    @johnguillory7759

    I looked closely at the nipple that inserts into the waste cartridge to see if there is a sensor on it and don't see one. So the printer does not sense when the cartridge is full but rather presents the replace cartridge message after printing x number of prints. So the new chip will not by-pass the replacement message. This method could work if a chip existed that tricked the printer into always seeing a new chip. Maybe a third party could make such a chip, like Precision Colors. If this makes sense then maybe you, Jose, could make them aware of this.

    Hi Jose. I've had the Pro-1000 for over a year and have had no issues and I am very happy with the print quality. Ink usage maybe more than other printers, but I don't attempt to track usage. I frequently exceed a week plus between printing and have had no problems. I enable the auto nozzle check and set the system cleaning frequency to standard, also enable the auto shake/agitate function for the ink tanks which appears to run about once a week regardless of print frequency. I have a calibrated monitor and paper profiles for various papers and all seems to match nicely. There is an option to let the printer perform color calibration for specific paper types. Do you see any reason that this function is necessary or helpful if you have profiles for your papers? Maybe this is for someone who doesn't create paper profiles? I am puzzled. I have to confess that I am not a print or camera expert and the printer is probably more that I need, but as you say I am married to it now. Thank you for the excellent videos. They have been very helpful and I have learned more here about printing than any where else. By the way I spent three years in Puerto Rico close to the old Ramey AFB. Cheers.

    Hi to you both, I have been married to my Pro 1000 now for 5 months and have kept a log book since day 1. Thanks for that tip Jose. I am very impressed with the printer and especially the tonality. Seeing how this is built up on the print with a microscope is very interesting indeed. I replaced the surplus ink cart a month ago and the cart contained 260 grams of ink! All inks are showing warning ⚠️ lights but as yet they are still at around the 10% left level. Canon tell me that I will get a new warning ⚠️ light when past the point of no return and the printer will automatically go into lock until the cartridge is replaced. I run a Mac and unfortunately do not have access to qimage yet. Does anyone have a work around for timed/scheduled prints when I am on holiday or away from home? Br John Perry

    There is no option on the printer menu but there are from the computer. But not sure about them. I have been having a big problem with ink waste. I print no LESS than every other day. When I start the printer it makes so much noise like a car starter for a few minutes. The other day it took like 20 minutes of this and then came up with a 5C14 error. I Had to shut down and turn back on then it was fine. I lost a lot of ink. Last month I spent $500 to update to PC inks. It hurts to see all that Ink go to waste. I don't have this problem with my Pro-100 which also prints wonderful prints CHEAP. I don't let this printer idle for more than 48 hours. THIS PRINTER IS EXPENSIVE!

    Why would you want to shut down Auto Nozzle Check. This is not an actual printed nozzle check but and internal identification of nozzles that are about to die and have to be replaced or rerouted to other Redundant Spare Nozzle. It occurs behind the scenes so you don't mess up even more trying to clean or print with that bad nozzle. The second one I think is ok to check but in practice I've been told it makes zero difference!

    Yesterday I printed, 3 x A2, 8 x10x8 and 33 5x7 photos with 10 Empty Cartridges (They been empty the last 2 times I started the printer, still printing fine) I try to wait until I have a bit of printing to do them in one go to avoid starting the printer over and over again. I feel this saves a bit of ink. I only print maybe once 1-2 month. How long can one leave the printer going for? seams like a lot of people never turn their once of... Im extremely happy with the print quality of this printer. It's amazing.
