Halleluja! Someone doing something experimental with their camera design - and who would have thunk it would have been Canon??! Sends me back to memories of their once experiment Powershot N lineup. I won't be buying one of these but I can certainly appreciate it.

Only thing I'm not a fan of is the internal battery that didn't appear to be replaceable while they were handling it/messing with the kick stand where you would think a door would be. That just relegates it to the landfill a lot sooner than it would have had to be if someone could swap out the battery.

Now all we need is Canon making a fixed lens camera for the prosumer. Anywhere between 28mm and 45mm will do. I'd buy it in a heart beat. Their G7XII has been one of the best cameras I've ever bought and I've bought a lot of high-end cameras.

Wow, I'm really impressed! Impressed how in 2023 leader of camera market can make a camera that shoots SO BAD. In regard of everything - dynamic range, noise, color profile, focus loses, exposure and white balance jumps - literally everything looks way worse than on any other camera you can buy today, including smartphones.

@@myself3209 im not hating on old gear, kindof the opposite. nothing made since 2014 has brought anything revolutionary to anyone who isnt a niche photographer or cinematographer. i hate how reviewers get hung up on niche features as if 20% fewer autofocus points makes a camera obsolete.

This takes me back to the days of the Flip video camera. It is targeting a different market, though.

Wow feels like they have stepped back 10 years, sure it’s a new design and different to other cameras out there but you get better image, stabilisation and audio from a GoPro 🤷‍♂️

Do you? Sensor is bigger, no ultra-wide lens that needs correction. Can't judge the mics yet from this, but since it has external input for a mic so it allows other configurations (like a cheap lav mic, or a simple wireless thingie).

@@jorismak The sensor being bigger doesn't excuse the actual video quality. It's just poor, man. In low light it falls apart easily even if it's technically big and the color science is just rainbow mode, skin tones look awful. Take into consideration that you only get just the most barebones options and you have something way too restricted and without any benefit to your regular pocket device. Most phones have stabilization to top all of this off, this has none... Canon is just being weird, like they've been for a decade+. I just don't see people with Iphones and stuff going for this thing. It looks cool and has that experimental spirit about it but that's as far as it goes. If you want a bigger sensor there's way better and more versatile options.

I don't know if these camera companies understand what's the most convenient thing about vlogging with the phone is. It's the seamless ability to share the footage on social media. People vlogg on the phone, 15s footage, apply filters and in matter of minutes it's on Tiktok. With a separated camera like this, you still have to transfer file, which add another cumbersome step into the process. If this thing aims at casual vloggers and Tiktok users, it will flop really hard.

I think there are times when a portable mini camera works better than having a phone for vlogging. Example when I travel, I wanted to save my phone battery and hardrive (For various reasons) So having a separate device that films in 4k is great. I use an osmo pocket which has 4k quality, stabilizer, pocket size, and allow me to record for about 1h and 20m.

As a new dad - I’m puuuuumped for cameras like this. Added a couple old canon and Sony point and shoots to the collection so this is right up my alley for family documentation. Keep up the solid work, brother! So good to see you two making content together again. :)

Thanks! These are definitely Dad-suitable cameras: small and easy to use using one hand, while you're trying to do kid-related stuff at the same time! I find myself using Leica M these days and just using something with a decent level of automation. Congratulations on becoming a new Dad! 😀

You can use cheaper car dashcams which are basically portable webcams (but some have larger sensors designed for phones) but usually need separate power supply which you can provide from a powerbank and have the same issue as webcams in that they have no image stabilisation. I'm just hoping for a new DJI Pocket 3 though.

The whole point of the smartphone camera is that its attached to your smartPHONE, you know, that thing you carry with you so you and others can communicate with everyone else. This thing cant compete with the DEFAULT and ONLY camera that most people have. If you/ they want to replace specifically the smartphone camera, then the camera needs to compete within the same parameters as the smartphone.

@@1theredrooster It could/should compete on price. I could see dropping $249 on this camera at the most. Based on this demo, I wouldn’t be willing to pay more, and definitely not $429. Also, maybe I missed it, but what is the battery life of this camera while recording? How long does it take to recharge the battery? Will it operate while recharging? (And while I’m asking the battery questions, I need to ask myself: Do I really need one more thing with a damn battery to keep track of?)

Yeah... I film my videos with my $50 smartphone. This thing just seems like a kiddie toy at an astounding price. If Canon dropped the price to $10 then I might try it but probably wouldn't use the videos. Might be OK at $10 for kids to play at making home movies.

When I learned of the SmallRig accessories, I had a similar reaction: “Why?” Clearly, this camera is for people who want the least complicated device possible for vlogging. And tbh I’m not mad at this. I’d rather pull this out over my phone any day. I think I’ll get one upon release.

I don’t understand why the camera companies haven’t figured out that what “vloggers” want is a camera no bigger than the G7XII, but with a F1.8 20mm lens, doesn’t even need to be a zoom lens, and a side flippy screen (not a flip up screen) because it must be able to have an external mic like the Deity D4 stuck on top. Nobody wants their mic stuck on the side of the camera like we did with the A6400. Then it needs a good long lasting battery that can be swapped out without any fuss, unlike with the GoPro and the media mod case. Then the image needs to look like a Sony A7III at the least, and it must able to do well in low light and not look worse than an iPhone 12 Pro. Is that too much to ask for?

Like if GoPro would build a camera with a cold shoe on top, a 3.5mm on board, no more cages, fix the close focus problem, and make the low capabilities light better, with the built in front screen I think they would win the “vlogger” game. I’m coming up on a fishing trip where I want to film myself and it’s coming down to choosing to run the GoPro 9 with the media mod and the D4 on top, I know the GoPro is going to be trash at night. I do that, or use my iPhone, or go with my FX3, 16-35, and a Rode mic, which costs so much more money and I don’t want to risk dropping for this particular trip.

Yeah that's too much to ask for. You have to beat physics for better low light

Unfortunately I own five tripods and require that they all be attached to the camera at the same time. The choice to only include four on the cage is a major oversight and makes this product useless to me. Nonetheless, Kai, I appreciate the review.

I think that’s excessive. Where are you supposed to put the shotgun mics and Tascam recorder? A shotgun mic or three extending into the frame gives the scene depth and draws the viewers eye to the subject. I guess the work around for both our problems is a cage for the cage that will give us 12 x 1/4-20, and 8 x 3/8ths threaded holes.

Quality is no better than a smartphone. But finally someone doing out of the usual camera BS. Hope the final version would have a better performance.

I feel like a GoPro makes way more sense at that price point.

It is very interesting that Canon came up to this mini rectangular video camera for recording daily life. Perhaps the main reason of manufacturing this product is a sales drive.

I have an HD Flip in a kitchen drawer and it still works perfectly. It still shoots better than a lot of cheaper android phones.

It looks like Canon had plenty of Ixus and Powershot P&S digital camera models lying around. So the management took decision to turn everything vertical and call it a new vlogging camera. That's how the V10 was born 😂 Same old p&s camera just the tweaks and new name.

I actually miss my canon vixia mini x. That workhorse held up for 10 years until the cable snapped. But still records.

Reminds me of a Flip Video camera from 2007 with a modern sensor. Smartphones killed those in about 2011 and I don't think this is going to take any marketshare back.

Would it be so hard for someone to make a 20mm equivalent compact 1" sensor camera that's actually usable for photography? Both this and the ZV-1F seem like big misses if you wanted an ultrawide for street photography or such. I know they're video-first designs, but like, an ultrawide compact for photography would be unique. Would double-duty be impossible? I'd love to see one with better handling than a phone, ideally with RAW capabilities to get the best out of a smaller sensor, and some usable controls.

I scrolled through the first 30 comments and was surprised that NOONE mentioned that this is just a resurrection of their Legria camera in a shittier formfactor!!! They did this kind of selfie-video back in the day, with a stand and good mic, acceptable lens... This here is, in comparison too chunky and awkward for my liking. If I wanted size and quality I'd rather go ZV10 or ZV1 with a small lens, maybe a dji osmo pocket 3(with accesories it would still be smaller). I really do like Canon and I used their multiple DSLRs and compacts through the years, icluding the legria and legria mini, but this is just too much novelty in an awkward formfactor for me. Thanks to you @KaiW for making this video though, as entertaining and informing as always!!!

This camera is the unofficial successor of the Legria cameras many KZreadrs used at the time it was current.

It seems like this could have been kind of cool if it was a little higher quality and maybe 10 so years ago. Or maybe if they really went back to the drying boards and came out with something that was much more functional with better auto focus higher quality with a hot shoe bigger sensor. Like I think it's kind of cool for a concept. But yeah "why would I use this instead of my phone" or my camera. I get it's for people that just want something a little better than your phone. But there's definitely I think better alternatives than this. Again, I think it's kind of cool, but I think cameras are cool So. It's like the audience that would like this. Would probably just spend more money and get something better.

You know what, this is actually really cool. No idea if they are gonna sell loads or not but nice try!
