I filmed the following video with the Canon SX50HS and the SX60HS in full auto mode at 1080p/30fps. I tried to match the framing as much as possible between cameras, but that proved to be really hard, especially since SX60HS can zoom out to 21mm (as opposed to the 24mm of the SX50HS). I didn't alter the clips in any way in post (other than putting them next to each other and stuff), so the brightness, color balance, sharpness, and such are all untouched. If you have any questions, comments, or whatever else, feel free to leave it in the comments below. Also, make sure to SUBSCRIBE to my channel for more tech videos, tips, unboxings, and quality tests. THANKS FOR WATCHING!

In the movie mode, clearly the Canon Powershot SX50HS is top dog. When you're panning in video, the transition is smooth. The Canon Powershot SX60HS video shot seems to jump and, or, skip as you're panning an outdoor scene. How Canon can screw that up is beyond me. It seems like they don't test their upgraded cameras.

Thanks for the side to side comparison! Hardly anyone takes the extra editing effort even though that is exactly what we need. The low/dim light stuff is especially helpful with the super zoom catagory

I own the three SX40, 50 and 60. The Sx40 is far better in image quality and audio. The Sx60 is superior to both, in fast focusing, zoom quality, there is no way that the Sx50 could level up with the SX60, I have tried it in many conditions, SX60 is always a winner, not even close to be honest. I love all three cameras, the one thing I love about the SX40, is the image quality, the feature that you can take a picture while shooting a video, which to my knowledge was removed in Sx50 and Sx60, if anyone managed to take a picture while recording a video, please let me know how you did it. They all have something to offer. I used all of them depending on the situations. The Sx60, I use mainly for its powerful zoom, the IS hey all have fantastic Image stabilisation, I really don't know why in this comparison his came out so choppy and sometimes out of focus. Weird.

The SX60 is inferior to the SX50 on three aspects: the fluidity of the video (choppy), the stability of the autofocus (flickers constantly on a still subject - easy to notice at the beginning in the indoor scene) and the sound of the stereo microphones (muffled with poor stereo separation).

Awesome video test between these two great cameras, in the beginning it seems the sx60 is a bit soft and also at the end with the beaver it seems a bit soft But thru out the sx60 is much clearer and faster focussing BUT the Big Deal Breaker of the two is the Zooming noise. There is No noise with the sx60.the Best review I've seen Thanks.

Mine has what looks like moving pixels when I film like its not really super clear. Is there a certain setting it has to be on? Or do you think something is wrong with my Camera?

I owned both the SX50 and the SX60. In the beginning all video I shot by the SX60 at 60 fps was clearly superior to the sx50. (much better results than the demo posted here) However suddenly one day the SX60 began to 'malfunction' and all video became so grainy that the video mode was rendered useless under all settings.

I currently use the SX50 HS for my videos and I find 1080p 24 FPS to NOT be enough when shooting sports video. Amazon isn't 100% clear, but can the SX60 shoot 1080p at 60fps? Also does it have a super slow-mo like the SX50? I could shoot 640p at 120fps and 240p at 240fps... does the SX60 have that feature? If so, is the resolution better? Thanks so much ahead of time :)

  • @DigitalTechReviewsTips

The SX60HS can shoot 1080p at 60fps. It can also do the 240p (aka WVGA) at 240fps. The resolution is exactly the same on all those modes unfortunately. If you really need some higher resolution slow mo, maybe wait for the next gen or check out a different camera.

Xeriox01 I personally think the SX50 HS has slightly better photo and video quality than the newer SX60 HS. However, if you really want/need the convenience of Wifi, a little extra zoom, 60 fps video, and 16mp photos, than the small decrease in image quality may be worth it.

65X Zoom is simply marketing, I'd say anything over 50x zoom will look noisy. 30x Zoom would be a sweeter spot. The SX60 has a built in mic piece for your ear. Looks more professional and is newer. 1080p at 60 frames is not a bad deal for the SX60, with some good lighting you should be fine. Shop around for the SX60 (:

That's cause of the OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) or maybe it might just be IS (Image Stabilization) cause I can't remember if they feature digital or real stabilization. You can turn it off in settings for when you aren't going to be shooting handheld and it definitely makes it look more responsive.

I'm pretty sure I put some numbers in the video if I was zooming in saying how many times zoom it was (or the equivalent in millimeters). I didn't use any digital zoom while filming this video, so the max for the SX50 & 60 HS are 50x and 65x respectively.

+Digital Tech Reviews & Tips Yes thanks, I watched it again and caught it the second time, good video, I have the sx50 and really like it, I was going to upgrade to the 60 but I think I will wait for the Sony RX-10 iii . It will be the first Sony in my arsenal but it looks impressive. All my DSLR cameras are Cannon as well, but I'm thinking on making the transition to mirorless in the future and Sony looks like they are ahead in that game. Take care eh, and keep up the good videos.

Great! And I forgot to say, that if you're planning to do some color correction it's best to set the saturation settings to low so you have a flat profile, otherwise you can leave it in the middle so: Menu, custom color settings ,C1 then press"disp" and you can change it. go beack to automatic (you can leave the settings as they are) if you go photgraphing again for else the screen will go green. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qGmXqpmTmaqwcdY.html is an example of flat profile with color correction kzread.info/dash/bejne/c3ydzbSRn93Le6g.html is an example of what i can do. ALSO I have noticed that (probably beacause of the focal point) the sharpness starts to get best from 3 x 5 times zoom. Succes!!

The SX60HS is clearly behind in handheld mode. The video is shaky. Are you sure you didn't put a lower mode? You were in 60 fps? Because SX50 is far beyond with its 30fps. I own a SX50HS and was wondering if I sell it and buy the new SX60, now I really Wonder and don't think I will buy the SX60HS. The new Nikon P900 with a incredible 83x is out now. Price is much higher but I'm waiting for the reviews on this Nikon camera. What I don't like with my SX50 is the out of focus very easily if the environment is not bright. Indoor, even in the day, suddenly you can lose the focus so the video is completely blurred 100% for 1, 2, 3 or 6-7 seconds then focused again on the subject. Quite irritating. I was hoping the new SX60 would do better but in the last video handheld, at the beginning it is clear the SX60 goes out of focus where SX50 doesn't. :-/ Last question: did you encoded video yourself before uploading them? Because they don't seem very sharp. Looks like 720p maximum or even under sometimes. Thanks a lot for your test.

  • @DigitalTechReviewsTips

I don't remember for certain whether or not I filmed the test footage with the SX60 HS at 60 fps orbit, but it really wouldn't make a difference. Higher framerates aren't necessarily smoother when filming handheld and in fact can sometimes exaggerate any shake or vibration. The main difference between the two is just likely the internal stabilization algorithms which Canon included. I completely agree with you on the focus issue as well and am possibly thinking of selling my SX60 HS to get the new P900. However, this type of camera (superzoom bridge cameras) with their small almost cellphone sized sensors are inherently bad in low light so it might not be much better. Finally, I exported the video to H.264 from Final Cut at 1080p and didn't touch the footage otherwise so what you see is what you can expect.
