Canon EOS 5D Mark I vs Canon EOS 5D Mark II (Summer Tree Twilight Landscape Photography)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I was passing a beautiful Hawthorn or maybe Blackthorn tree at twilight. I thought this would be a good subject to compare the Canon EOS 5D Mark I against it’s predecessor Canon EOS 5D Mark II. The Canon EOS 5D Mark I or Classic was renowned for its filmic rendition of colours. Which would do well in this LUT Map Instagram world photographic world.

    I liked the mark II until you showed the comparison with the mark 1, the colors on the mark 1 for the tree looked much better and the greens seem more natural as well. Excellent useful video -thanks for the efforts. Best wishes! Now I am going to clean (eventually) my mark 1 sensor and buy one of those infrared filter things. Quite good information on these Canon cameras.

    If you want a filmic Instagramy look the mark 1 has a few more creative options, especially on those blues sky days in infrared. Though I haven't tried it in autumn and winter yet. Have some photographic fun with your mark 1 especially next summer. 😎

    Good video and nice pictures. I have to agree that the Mark I photo seemed the most appealing though the II's not bad either. I got a mark II not to long ago to get into full frame photography. Besides being a Canon fan since the 80's, I've been shooting with a 70D for a while and already had a collection of full frame ef lenses, so the 5D2 seemed like a good option for my budget. I have to say I've been pretty happy with it.

    I was literally taken back with the end conclusion of this video. Like I actually had exclamation of surprise on my face and pulled back in my chair. hahaha. I'm in shock that you and everyone felt the classic had the better photo. I thought it was definitive the mark 2 had the better image. The contrast and saturation was good without being too much. It had a more artistic feel to it.

  • @andrewfindlayphoto

    @andrewfindlayphoto

    It's just personal taste. The greens in the mark 2 are more contrasty which was more realistic compared to the flatter greens of the mark 1. But the main thing is that the mark 2 had to much orange in the pinks which the mark 1 doesn't have. It's vitamin C deficent 😆

    @@andrewfindlayphoto ok, yep. I just went back and rewatched. I totally see what you're saying now. I guess it just depends where your focus is and what your taste is. I guess I was looking at the majority impression it gave me, which was the contrast and saturation. It just hit me. But yes, I can totally see if the tree was the focus, you would want to capture it as accurately as possible. And of course, with Lightroom you can make both of these images look identical to each other, if one wanted to.

    @@jasonkrug6277 Yes software can do wonders to match photos from different cameras. Sometimes the lack of saturation, contrast, dynamic range and resolution adds to the image. Gotta stand up for the mark 2 here.. Although the same size they are two completely different sensors along with two different processors.. Having said that I actually prefer the image from the mark 1 in this instance but I feel that given a bit of fettling with picture style settings the mark 2 could produce an equally impressive image and as Im sure you are well aware 10 minutes in post process will turn out anything you wish. If you'd like something really fresh try leaving the L in the car and stick a Mamiya/Sekor 200mm on either camera, Or an XR Rikenon 50/2 L (Tomioka).. • @ShutterNChill

    @ShutterNChill

    There's also a significant ISO difference: when you set them to the same ISO setting (such as 100) they are not the same actual ISO. The 5Dc is about 93 and the mark II is around 70. (Similar difference applies to the other ISO values as well.) Enough to squash the highlights enough that the 5Dc runs out of the little headroom it has compared to the mark 2, at the same setting that is ideal for the mark 2.
