CONCLUSION
Time to recap this review and draw some conclusions about the canon ef-s 10-18 - so here goes;
The BUILD QUALITY: it's clearly not professional grade, nor was it ever intended to be, but canon had to cut costs somewhere to produce a lens like this for just $299. And where canon really cut corners was in the housing, it's made out of a thin - lightweight plastic - which lends itself well to the lenses paltry weight of just under 9 ozs - nice if you're going to walk around with it all day, not so nice for long term durability, even the filter thread and lens mount are made out of plastic. There's no weather sealing but surprisingly canon did include image stabilization. And remember, because it's plastic, you have to wonder if it cold survive the day to day rigors of a working professional. The focus and zoom rings are - but truth be told, it's about what you'd expect from a $299 lens, for build we gave it a 7.5/10
AF SPEED AND ACCURACY: the stm motor that's included is very quiet and reasonably quick, the stm works exceptionally well in video mode, specifically with the dual pixel technology in the 70D, it has a full time manual focus override, even in AF mode. It's no where near as fast as a canon ultra sonic, but it's also not as buzzy as some of the other lower end models from canon, like the highly regarded 50mm f/1.8 e.g.. Fortunately, when you're considering a wide angle lens, focus speed isn't usually on the top of the list of priorities, all in its an adequate and accurate performance, format speed and accuracy, we gave it an 9.5/10
OPTICAL QUALITY / QUALITY OF RESULTS: Downright excellent, especially relative to the price. I'm getting sharp results straight from f/4.5 and things stay great until about f/11 where diffraction really sets in and starts to degrade the sharpness. With a couple of tweaks in lightroom, getting to the promised land is a snap. Overall, it's a much better performance than the price point would indicate. Optical quality 9.5/10, Quality of the results 10/10
VALUE: At $299 in my opinion, the 10-18 sets a benchmark for price to image quality ratio. When you consider that the majority of wide angle lenses - specifically from canon start at prices much higher than this, then the 10-18 is nothing short of an amazing value! Major pros include a low price, excellent optics, a silent and reasonably fast and accurate focus motor, and decent build for the money. On the downside is a relatively narrow - and variable - aperture, there's no weather sealing, and even though the quality of the plastics is a notch above the average kit lens, they're still plastic down to the mount and the filter threads, Canon had to cut costs somewhere, so they sacrificed on the build quality. But all in at the price point, the 10-18 represents an outstanding value from the folks over at Canon. So for value, Canon just knocks it out of the park and it easily earns a 10/10
Overall 45.5/50 - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
THE FINAL WORD: If you're thinking about getting into landscape, real estate or architectural photography and you're just starting out, then I think you have to consider the 10 - 18 from Canon, it's a low cost, high quality lens with only a few compromises, I wish it were built a little bit better, but image quality like this is a bit of a shock at only $299. It's nice to see Canon diving into the value game head first, and the 10-18 is a winner. Great video thank you. I picked one up used for 175 Canadian with a hood for my back up 7d and I could not be happier with it. One thing I would add is there is a metal mount that you can swap out the plastic one for on Amazon specifically designed for this lens. But it’s an amazing lens even before that mod.

Great review. I picked one up from eBay in like-new condition for half of its original price. I use it on my Sony A7ii with a Yongnuo EF-E II adapter. It focuses very quickly. I'm loving it.

Excellent review - I was given one of these by my Dad just before I headed off to Alabama (I am UK based). It swallowed up most of the Saturn V at the space and rocket centre in Huntsville and gave me some great sunset beach shots at Gulf Shores. I was curious to find out what was being said about this lens, hence my visit here. Thanks.

Like you say though, it's a shame on the plastic build, but I'm still not complaining about that because the picture quality is absolutely outstanding. Great review. I watched a few of them on this specific lens. I liked yours the best. I am watching these AFTER I bought the lens. I was browsing on BestBuy and looking at the " store pick up " stock.. Well I searched for a good memory card cause I needed one and stumbled upon this. Needless to say with in an hour it was mine. I couldn't be happier. I know it will be my main lens seeing as I use my camera for shooting lots of cars/realstate, and action sports. People say that its a little dark, but to be honest, I have not even noticed. I dont shoot professionally. A lot of my shooting is done for hobby, and for friends. So I got two lenses for 350$ from BestBuy, it came with the 50mm one as well.. I am not complaining. OH NO I AM NOT. Best 350$ I have spent on camera equipment. My next lens will obviously be a better wide angle. This will do for now.

It’s 2024 and recently purchased my lens. I’m loving my 10-18mm and am realizing how I missed so many great shots not having this super wide angle lens in my kit.

I used one on an APS-C Sony camera for awhile with a Neewer adapter... It worked flawlessly. AF was darn near as fast as native lenses up to Low speed continuous shutter.. can't beat the price from BB on a lens in this range..

I might - everyone that's tried it loves the AF in live view for video, but sadly no 4K....

I have it and i don't like it at all for the reasons i explained before. It you use it at the maximum angles it only does rubbish at the edges. I's is not at all a recomendable one to take good shots with it in wide angle the reason why people buy it, to find out it's garbage.

Martino190 - Thank you very much. I've not used that Tammy 28-75, but in general the reviews are pretty good, but I understand the focus motor is a little loud on that lens...
Is it noisy indoors? Thinking about one of theses lens to make building photography.

f/4.5 - f/5.6 is about as slow as it gets for DSLR lenses. To those who own this lens, do you often end up with crappy, grainy photos? Or have trouble getting enough light for your shot?

I am in the market for a zoom lens. Would you recommend this over the tamron 10-24mm? I read reviews saying the tamron is heavier and very noisy. Thoughts?
But what about the flaw of the high aperture you didn’t mention?
Hello Darren, what is the image quality in comparison with de canon ef 17-40mm f4? It is comparable? I now have de canon 7d mark II, and I use to go hiking with the canon 100-400mm and also take the 17-40 f4 for landscapes. Maybe the 10-18 is a better choice in terms of lightweight, and more range on the wide side. Thank you very much!
Great lens for the price but I often find this lens for video work, is always a bit noisy when you're filming anywhere that isn't outside in bright light. Even in a well lit studio at f4/.5, low ISO, still got lots of noise. Nothing that a denoiser can't fix but something people should know!
Nice review! Thanks. This can be picked up over here for £180 with a Canon £20 cashback offer, so for £160 this seems like a steal. It's close to a year and a half since it came out, so do you still consider it a good buy, especially at this price, or is there a newer better equivalent?

You may have just sold this to me......I am looking to purchase one of these and a canon 7d to compliment my sony nxcam which I used purely for shooting weddings. This is my first step into the world of DSLR, so hoping that this will do well as an all rounder to begin with.
