I cried when he said he mostly hand holds it, not because you can't. You shouldn't lol, thats what a monopod is for in the first place. You should use support for super-tele lenses anytime you can. It's not about the amount of weight, it's about the stability it provides, which makes for sharper images. I would never shoot sports without a monopod when using a 300mm 2.8 or above. This is a 300mm 2.8 size and weight so you should be using a monopod buddy.

I should clarify my last comment, I would never use a super-tele lens without a monopod unless it was prohibited by the league or organization. I have been forced before to hand-hold my 400mm f2.8 lens at some basketball arena's. If you don't have a choice than I understand, but obviously he is choosing to hand-hold it.
Very helpful. Thank you.
Great review !
The coolest lightest tele lens!!
Thinking of getting this lens for wildlife
Amazing lens i like it
Nice review .
Hi Vincent, great review. Tested the 400 DO versión 1? What's your opinon of this lens versión 1 vs the 2?
According to Canon MTF with 1.4X or 2.0X teleconverter, it should be very nice for both. I will try as soon as I get one next week. Thanks for the post
I have to get one of these canon lenses one day
so with the 7d mark ii did work well on cloudy days? how over roll u like it on a 7d? thx so much sir
Vincent, thanks for the comment comparing the Sigma 1.4x TC and the Canon version III TC. I have the version I 400 DO, and was wondering if the Canon 1.4 TC would be worth it, and you saved me over 300 dollars!

Hi Colt. I 'm looking for a 400 DO 1 versión. If its ok for you please contact me at diegofineart@yahoo.com. I have some question about this lens so maybe you could help me. Tanks
Canon and Nikon are the leader with bright telephoto lenses. Sony a-mount has the heritage of Minolta bright super telephoto lenses. However with e-mount it is very behind.
sp...which lens worked better for you this one or the 100-400 is II you did such a great job reviewing?

Hi Ignat. You have autofocus with the 100 400 II + 2x II? Which body do you use?
Better this tool over the canon 500 ii
Hi Vincent. how the cenon 400 compers whit the sigma 120-300?

Short answer, if you have good light and almost all of your shots you need as much reach as possible, I would go with the 400. If you need versatlity in your focal length or shooting in low light, the Sigma. Long answer - The Sigma definitely falls behind the 400 in terms of image quality and auto focus speed. Not to mention the weight. The sigma weighs a full pound more than the Canon 300mm, so it's heavy. Very difficult to hand hold for most people. But the 400 you can hand hold an entire game without to much trouble if you need to (but I recommend a monopod). The 400 is just so fast with auto focusing and the images are tac sharp. I rarely missed a shot when using the 400. But, the 300 gives you a one stop advantage which is huge for low light. And it gives you the ability to zoom. So if your like me, and really hate using two camera bodies, the Sigma is really the only option out there right now. I absolutely love the 400, one of the best lenses I have ever used, but the Sigma is just more versatile and that is why I use it. For a sport like high school baseball, the 400 works great. I typically have good light and im usually zoomed in all the way for 80% of my shots (and often times still want more reach). But every other sport I either have lighting issues or I need to zoom out for enough shots that the Sigma just makes more sense, unless you are willing to use two camera bodies (and get proficient at using two camera bodies, something I have struggled to master).

raulsalza I did not buy it new so to be honest I'm not sure. but if it has a hard case with a lock it should. I would contact the retailer you bought it from and ask about it.
