Funny, I was just thinking this. Yesterday I walked to my local park and found some willing subject and today I enjoyed some backyard birds and the first green of springtime. As healthier individuals it's also our responsibility not to spread this to others that may not be able to make it through this. My wife and I have been vegans for the past 4 years trying to do our part for the planet and our health. I hope you keep up the great videos, I'm always happy to see when a new one has been posted and I like that you sometimes expand outside of just photography in these talks.

Hey Adrian, always look forward to your interesting observations and thoughts on wildlife photography matters. I assume the juggernaut that Canon is will release an amazing camera in the EOS R5. The issue I have with Canon and Nikon is that their mirrorless cameras require adapters to work with their existing telephoto lenses. Would you use an adapter to work with the R5 or a Z7/Z6? I'm turned off by the idea but I also am reluctant to invest further in the DSLR systems. Hmmm, wonder who might make native mount telephotos for mirrorless cameras?? Stay healthy.

Gary G I am hoping that the inclusion of animal AF in the EOS R5 plus the fact that no RF telephoto lens are on the RF roadmap means that they are expecting people to have to use adapted EF lenses for a while and will therefore ensure that the performance is good. But we’ll see... Take care.

Hey Adrian I shoot 7dmkii for action of dogs. I'm seriously considering jumping to sony A7R3 for their animal eye AF whilst the dogs are still for portraits. I mainly use my sigma 105 f1.4 @ f1.4 & sometimes just want the eyes in focus. I wonder if this kind of animal focus will end up having out of focus eyes & more on the nose or ears. Have you heard anymore if canon will have their own specific eye af for animals? I can increase my aperture if I want the whole head in focus lol. Why specifically eye AF is important to me is the fact that on my 7d mkii for the style of dogs I shoot & the way they have to be posed etc the eye can sometimes be out of my focus points. Sony will just lock on & give me full freedom of composition. Thoughts?

Hey there. So Canon have definitely said that in the “Advanced Animal Autofocus” in the soon-to-released EOS R5 (although apparently won’t be available until September) it will recognize the eyes, heads, and bodies, of dogs, cats, and birds. The thing about eye AF is it definitely sometimes can get it wrong in the following ways. a) Sometimes it won’t see the eyes even though you can see them. b) Sometimes it will mistake something else like patches of fur or the ears as the eyes. In one of my recent videos about how I do and do not use the auto features of my cameras, I talked a bit about how I use animal eye AF. Basically I use it as a bonus. I still move the focus area around with the joystick to follow the eye (or head) but if the camera can identify the eyes faster than I can move the focus area there, then I’ll take that as a bonus and get the lock on quicker. How successful it is at finding the eyes depends a lot on the species and the conditions but I can definitely say that even though I haven’t photographed a lot of dogs, I have photographed a lot of foxes and bears and lions and generally the animal eye AF is very, very good and especially so with canids. If you look at my style of photography, I shoot a lot of shallow depth of field like f2.8, f1.8, and f1.4 (including the Sigma 105) and a lot of my shots have eye contact with the animal. If I had to go to a camera system that didn’t have animal eye AF, I would miss it a huge amount and it would definitely reduce my effectiveness to get the shots I want. Happy to have an extended discussion about this over on the Discord server if you want: clickon.link/wildlifephototalk.

The Marksman sorry, I initially posted the wrong link to the Discord server. Just updated it. I should also mention that I previously shot with the A7RIII before moving to later model Sony cameras and the animal eye AF was very good there.
