Canon 5D Mark IV with Severe Liquid Damage - Let's Try to Fix It - Revisit - I bought this camera for $500 and tried to fix it in a previous video but wasn't able to. So I decided to give it one more try to see if I can get it working. I check the battery and battery connections, check for shorts on the board, and check the LCD screen.

The little grey thing between the lock switch and the rotary encoder is a red led which should turn on when you change the battery or open the SD card hatch, if it doesn't work the problem has to be on the mainboard or on whatever powers it Source: I have used a lot of canon cameras and they all do the same
Another example of how Right To Repair is important. If Steve had access to schematics, he would be able to diagnose this issue more easily, and it would mean less "broken" electronics out of landfills
Can't win em all, but I appreciate that you post it all the same. That's why you're one of my favorite electronics fix channels.

That cap on the right at 7:55 looks gone, maybe the fuse too
I like the honesty in posting fixes that don't work out. It makes me feel better for when I struggle to fix something
Apologies if someone else has already mentioned it but at 8:10 in the video the cap just below the resistor on one side does not look very healthy to me. Now it may of just been dirt but I didnt see it again after you cleaned parts so hard to tell.
Glad I'm not the only one waiting around for these videos to come up, even though I don't attempt my own micro electronic repair, it's good advice and practices for all repair.
Don't give up! Time to search for another one that you can try and use for parts to prove this camera out.
Hey steve, and your spare time I highly suggest while attempting to power the camera on that you look over the main board with your thermal camera. Although I agree with you the LCD could be bad, you could also have one of those main IC's bad as well.
I might have missed this, but did you try pressing the shutter just to see if it works even without a display. This was a great 2-part series, even if you didn't get it fixed yet. I think you can, but just gotta leave it on the backburner to stew for a while. You'll get it.
Learning that it is not fixable is just as educational as learning that you can fix it. Great video! Thank you for showing your process
Yes please, I love to see you fix expensive mirrorless cameras...
Yess, these camera fix videos are fascinating stuff!!! love it!
Best repair videos on KZread!
Hello Steve! I know I can't be sure that only the LCD's defective, but if you really want to try and replace it (and make another video out of it?), those LCDs are available (just search for the printed numbers that are on the back of the LCD. But since you're a smart person, I'm pretty certain that you've already done it.). Love to see you expand your horizon!
its cool seeing you fix more electronics than consoles... love your vids about cameras
I was waiting for this!
I would love to see you try to repair graphics cards
Definitely try again. That was interesting
sometimes you just have to let one go.....excellent attempt!
Digital cameras are some of the worst to repair. Even disassembly is something a ride into a rabbithole as when I fixed mine(luckily just a cold joint). Very interesting to watch again.
Don't give up!
I think you can just try to put all circuits in ultrasonic cleaner and inspect all connector under a microscope after that. Monitor them under a thermal camera too if say. Also check the power button is good or not. And maybe check if voltages change in case you turn on off the switch?
Nice video Steve 😀👍

Don't give up on this!
Thanks for the video! it was great seeing you try again. I was just wondering if there was an hdmi out port so that you could check if there is image sent through that port
Honestly, with Canon keeping schematics close hold I wouldn’t bother with trying to repair any of their cameras that have liquid damage. Excellent video!
Could the lcd just be toast? If you got another one you could just try swapping the lcd. Either way I do like seeing the insides of different kinds of electronics.
I have that exact came and she takes amazing pictures
You must be sure of battery's capacity. of course You can try battery in suitable working camera (Have some battery capacity testers too or connect a resistance for checking current capacity) Also monitoring to curent while all controls.(While current increase that is mean "fix it one problem") And you must find same model working camera and must replace boards with working machine also must replace flex cables too Actually you must use ultrasonic cleaners too for boads (especially for flex ribbon cables too)
im just wondering why you didnt try to take a pic with the camera maybe the lcd's aint working but throwing a memory card in and trying to snap a few photos then checking the card on a computer??
I don't understand how it's not fixable. If it's just the LCD, buy a replacement?
Another great video about only person I watch every video from on KZread. Also the reason I have my broken xbox one controller in peices on my desk

Yep, it's sad
You should maybe try to connect the hdmi out from the camera to a monitor to see if something happens or maybe try to connect the usb cable to see if a pc would recognize the camera. Love your videos :)
Just my thoughts on this. Look for another camera of the same make and model that has body damage from being dropped. Hopefully where the lens attaches. This way maybe the LCD and rest of the rear panel are intact.
You could try connect the camera to monitor, see if you get anything out of that. At least you can confirm if the display is the issue.
Love to see you fix Xbox 360s red ring. Definitely a cheap project. Love to see those get fixed up
Please do another video trying to fix another camera
I’m curious as to if the lenses need to be attached. Also The real possibility of the LCD screen not functioning prevents the camera from working at all if an LCD replacement would be viable

Sucks about the camera but I love this content and seeing you attempt to repair and learn more about high end camera's. So I would love to see more content like this.

Where/how do you find schematics for things you’re repairing?
How much for the camera i need the front screen for it
Great video as always hopefully u can resell it on eBay for parts to get back your money
Steve you think it would be fixed with a new LCD?
If the voltage changes when you power it up. Even with no LCD if you try to take a picture, will it click?
Hey Tronics, when drag-probing those tiny pins like that, aren't you afraid of shorting two adjacent pins and eg sending 3V into something that can only tolerate 1V, destroying the logic you're probing with your probe?
Hi normal they are fuses on mainboard do you know they are good?
hi do you know what could be wrong with a nintendo switch docking station with a blinking green light when connected to power and no switch in the dock
hope it will work now man

I would check fuses. These does not like shorted circuits by water. And it also was not properly cleaned - circuits are full of minerals from the water and this mess is conductive. So IPA or destilled water with ultrasonic cleaner could help with cleaning inaccessible areas. But 500 dollars is a lot for water damaged camera so i would not give up. It feels like you did not much to save this thing in this video. It feels like this video was made just for advert. I am not blame you - just say how does it feels like. We saw just dissasemble, bit of cleaning and measuring.
Can i get the camera and try to fix it
dont know if u will ever see this but my 2ds xl recently stopped working and now it the light turns on and it just makes this pop sound and then turns off and when i go onto your website there is no options on 3ds or any ds so i was wondering if u could fix it for me
So I know it’s not necessarily related to the video, but does anyone know what’s recommended to remove corrosion on battery terminals? Someone left some batteries in an Xbox controller I bought in a lot and it doesn’t seem to come off easily with isopropyl alcohol.
Thanks for taking another crack at it. Seems like just either too much wrong or the lack of schematics keeping this one from being fixed.
Nice job on this one... Tough break. Cameras are hard. Seems like you should be hearing the musical tones or beeps on startup, even if the screen was kapooie...... When I fixed mine, I did need to go ALL THE WAY TO THE FRONT, for the shutter assembly & motor.... I sense that you are DONE with this one... but off camera, you might try pulling it ALL the way apart.... SO much dirt in there.... Ugh. In the Sony world, there are parts, on EBay... The parts I got sold did come in real Sony-embossed plastic bags, so.... If you could figure out what's wrong, isolate it to one board, or one component.... Buy a part.... Fixed! You were saying "I don't know what's wrong on this board" talking about the main board behind the LCD.... You don't have to. If you have strong suspicions of the board, try to buy another one.... Follow me? If you took it down to the last screw... and found something... Bingo! Buy a part. Just a thought. Great job though, really. I kinda like those connectors they use. The Sony was all scary ribbon cables, that slip in, or are locked into little holders. Those always scare me.
keep up with the videos though much fun pogpogpogpogpogpogpog
For next video Repair a dead gpu would love to see that
Why not?
The only way you can fix that camera is getting a working camera of same model. Canon cameras are known for damaged LCDs. Swap LCD and it might work. Another issue you will next encounter is with the lens pogo pins. Don't waste your time as it is not worth the effort. Still you haven't disassembled the entire camera, there would be a ton of screws and we can have a guessing game. 40/50/60/70 screws?
do a nother one
Maybe send it to Vince?

Make sure you are not keeping it cooped up, two hours pretty long, there is likely not any issues with the hardware. Make sure you have it sitting out in the open, and try replacing thermal paste like mentioned before If it was overheating immediately it might have been a hardware issue, but it doesnt sound like one to me
part 3 dont give up get a spare lcd
vim pelo canal do Joãopsn,,,e ja me inscrevi no canal
Why didn't you replace the screen? You said that liquid might have damaged it .... maybe the screen is faulty
😃
Even if you managed to make it turn on, it would never take decent photos. The image sensor, the auto focus sensor, the pentaprism are probably ruined. Not to mention the shutter curtain which is delicate as hell. I see no point in trying to fix that camera. By the way, you are most likely shorting the pins when you sweep them with the probe like that, even if it's sharp as a needle, the pins are smaller.
why not find a donor camera and try to fix it that way?
Hey
