Incredible shots John and I dare say you looked right at home with that lens. Osprey’s are my fav so I was glued to the screen on this vid. Great video and shots as always my friend. Thanks for sharing the results and adventure out 👍🙏

Peter!!! That is where the EF 100-400 or the RF 100-500 would have the advantage..... and the minimum focus distance. LOL. This is such a fantastic lens and I forget how fantastic it is until I take it out! Thank you, thank you Peter. 🙏🤗💖

It is a fantastic lens. I have the 600 F4 these days, and a couple of other lenses as well, but the old 500... still amazing!! 🙏🤗💖

Stunning Osprey image John!👏Doubt I could hold that lens with both hands and maybe one foot! It is definitely top tier quality though.

Great footage. I dream to test that lens one day soon. One suggestion: Crappy mic audio with highway noise doesn't get better by adding a boring stock footage audio on top. :D Best of luck to the future photoshoots! I hope you get to shoot something great!

Eero - thank you for the input!! That highway noise is what you hear there. It is near a major freeway, major roads and the regional airport make it really loud there. I was trying something different there for this one and didn't want to lose the who video. I had the Rode Videomicro on the GoPro Hero 10 instead of my wireless on my 90D that does cut a good bit of the ambient noise. The GoPor is a wonderful action camera but since you can not adjust the audio as I would like, that will be the last time with this set up. Just wanted to save weight. This audio is crap - I know that. Ah well, I will not be using this set up again unless I use and external recorder. Did my best to quickly clean it up without getting too in-depth with it. Thank you Eero for the input! 🙏💖😁

🙂 great stuff. I have the same 500mm f4 and love it so much even more on the R7 but the weight is a pain. recently got the rf 100-500mm and now the 500 f4 is the best door stop I have 🙂

Hi John, I just got this lens with the R7. I get the full 15fps in mechanical with servo tracking, but only about 10 fps in electronic. It makes no sense to me. Why would electronic be slower ? Is it the case with you too? In one shot AF and MF I can get the full 30 fps Thanks a lot !

Simon - I just saw this comment so please forgive me for not responding. You know, I actually prefer the slower FPS - less to go though. With my older cameras, I shoot at the max but that is 4-5 FPS. It still works for me You will get more if the shoot compressed raw - that works as well. I noticed how slow it was with the Nikon Z9 shooting full raw without compression. That may have something to do with it. Give it a try!!! 🙏❤🤗

I have the exact camera, but I am contemplating getting the same lens. I know the video doesn’t do it justice. Do you have to crop by much? I would imagine they are super crisp images.

I have enjoyed this lens on this camera body a LOT! The weakest part, other than the weight, is the minimum focal distance. The RF 100-500 can focus closer and is actually sharper..... at about the same price. These older lenses are still amazing and work perfectly with these new camera bodies!!! With everything, I crop to present the image in the way I want - video too. The awesome thing with the higher megapixel cameras is the detail - you can crop way in and still have an amazing photo!!! 🙏❤🤗

Great video. Thank you. Question related to the function of EF 500mm f/4 IS USM I lens. I am finding, when IS is activated and camera body is also on, the IS motor seems to make a constant whir or hum as it if is working or poised to work at any moment. Do you hear anything audibly coming from the lens, if the camera is perfectly still?

At the time of shooting this, I was not having that problem. However, it did start creeping up before I traded it in. The RF lenses are so quiet, so I am going to spurge and get a new long lens. Believe it or not, the RF 800 F11 blew my mind. So much so, that when I saw the results I was getting and the noise from my EF 500 F4, for me that was the deciding factor to trade it in. 🙏💖🤗

Bonjour Stéphane !!! oui le V1 500 F4 fonctionne parfaitement sur le R7 - V1 si ce que j'avais et le extender que j'utilisais était la version III - j'utilise toujours mon V3 sur mon 600 F4 III. Une chose à propos de Canon est que TOUS leurs anciens verres EF s'adaptent parfaitement et fonctionnent parfaitement sur les nouveaux boîtiers RF. La seule raison pour laquelle je n'ai pas cet objectif en particulier est que je l'ai vendu pour pouvoir avoir de l'argent pour le 600 F4 III - le V1 500 F4 est un objectif IMPRESSIONNANT. Aie du plaisir avec ça. 🙏💖🤗

This will be my next lens. I already have the 100-500 for hiking. The 500 f4 mk1 will be for stationary or out of the car. Great footage. The mark 2 is lighter, but over double the price lol

Kevin, thank you!!! I LOVE this lens..... other than the weight. I have seen so many talking about how the old EF lenses are not as good on the RF mount and I just dont think that is the case. I just put out another video using 3 lenses for video and the results surprised me. All I will say, is that I will continue to use the EF L lenses with an adapter. They are imperceptibly almost as sharp with the adapter, and less expensive. Thank you, thank you thank you!!! Kevin! 💖🤗🙏

I attached my R7 to my old 500 4.5L (w/vitrox adapter) and getting vignette> any thoughts on how to eliminate? Dont want to crop. Thanks

Hal, it is most likely the adapter. I use only Canon and have no problems. Others I know also use only Canon adapters. When shooting macro with extension tubes, for me, I discovered that I had problems with the off brand but the Canon native were no problem. And that was just extension tubes. That would be the first thing I would try. 🙏❤🤗
