I was so happy to see you put it use and share with us out and about in the elements. Thank you again. My pleasure and thanks for watching. Many people in this Vlog have given it a slating but it all depends what you want out of it! I won't use it in the pouring down rain, don't even do that with my R3 as I've got weather proof covers, who would intentionally without protecting your kit. So far images nice and sharp, bit noisy over 32,000 ISO which is standard but can be easily sorted with noise reduction software. Light, fast and pretty good battery life, all in all for BIF's and a backup I am happy. Still have more testing to do, BIF's Low Light and with my 500 Prime but so far, so good. Thanks again R

Thanks mate, I really love the 1-5, many people are put off by F7.1 but I still get a lovely OOF blur and it's fast as for BIF's, much faster than my 1-4 Mk 2. The 7D2 is a beauty of a camera and has done so well as a birders camera! I'm very happy with the R7 for the time I've had it, you'll need some De-Noise software when shooting 32,000 and over but apart from that it's a winner in my book. Cheers R 👍

Just replaces basically manual, Av AND Tv and the automatic mode lol ll my custom modes are not relying to Av, Tv and so, they are all Fv for 1/2000+ mechanical for BIF and electronic mode for regular birding, besides one mode for the rare landscape usage.

Hi Richard. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I have been using the R7 for a few months and agree with what you have said. I get over the buttons by having the iso, aperture and shutter speed in the view finder so that I can change each one with just the two dials. I have set the AF up the same as Ron from Whistling Wings and it works great, is this how you have yours set up? I am using it for handheld macro as the frame rate is more than the 5DSR so I can stack images handheld. My first choice is still the 1DX for ergonomics and image quality and personally if the AF is the same as the R3 then I will not be changing the 1DX until the R1 comes out. All the best.

I've heard rumours about the R1 and it's possible 100MP sensor, best of luck with a huge storage device, lol... for now I am happy with the R3 at 24. Thanks again R👍

What a wonderful accurate review of the canon R7 . To be honest I had the 7d ii 90d and r6 and was waiting for reviews of the r7 when it was launched , I stopped using my 7d ii and 90d after purchasing the r6 as its immense. I never was going to order the r7 as I was happy with my r6 . I was always reading people was waiting and waiting for preorders etc etc so couldn’t find great uk reviews at all. Then……. One day I emailed a few online camera stores to see if they had any in stock all my reply’s was pre order massive waiting list….. then one day a week later I got an email and asked if I was still interested I said yes got the old card out and purchased a body only …. Wow how lucky was that, I’ve had it a month now and love it at the side of my r6 …. Let’s say it’s an early Christmas present , sold the 7d ii and 90d , happy days

Thanks Paul, very kind of you to say! So good that you managed to bag the R7 like you did, as some people have been told at least 6 months.... Personally and obviously it lacks loads of the more desirable features of the more expensive pro models but I couldn't stretch to an R5 as a backup and the 1.6x crop and the weight were quite a deciding factor for me. Does it take great pictures in good light, Yes, does it struggle in Low light and at high ISO, Yes... But to be honest I can live with that and it's a fun camera to have. Best of luck with your combo, good to have a FF and a crop camera to hand. All the best and thanks for watching. Cheers Richard

Since I got my R7 have not used the 7DMKii since. My keeper rate has gone up drastically and with the RF 100-400 or RF600 (I own and use both) it is very light, portable and the camera is fast and auto focus superb. Combine it with a denoise system like Topaz and it does just about everything you need as a birder

Hi Richard, thanks for the video, very helpful. I have a R7 on preorder and looking forward to getting it soon. I swapped my Nikon D500 and D750 for a Canon R6 earlier this year, along with the RF100-500 and RF24-240 and have not been disappointed at all although it did take a while getting used to the Canon set-up compared to the Nikons. The R7 will serve as a second body and will be used mainly for wildlife and if it performs as well as the R6 (and your comments regarding the R3 and R7 suggest it will) I shall be more than happy.

Just in case people missed the title! I’ve taken 50 images with this camera! It’s a FIRST IMPRESSION look at the R7 😀👍 And just to reiterate the points I mentioned... It's not a Pro Body.... It's not better than the R5... The AF is probably better as stated by Canon, comparable to the R3. It might be of interest to some Pro's as a backup.... It does get Buffer lockout, selective actuations needed, CRAW does offer 46 shots before buffer locks.... takes time to recover using the fastest cards. Most of all I Love it and for £1350 it's well priced for what it has to offer..... No cameras perfect! ISO above 32,000 needs noise reduction software... Thanks for watching all :-)

Richard Give cRAW a chance! Since I tried it I never looked back. Zero loss win your files, the whole process speeds up from by far less buffer lock ups to file transfer, ... I Just finished watching. It seems to be a decent camera. I like Canon optimizing ergonomics. I own the R5 and the R (ans an old 1DX II) The R is by far too slow to shoot bird and things. But I find myself shooting quite a lot with it and not using the R5(!) due to the 4-way non rotary wheel which offers five buttons free to be programmed to own preferences. The R5 has 3 rotary wheels (R only 2 if you do not count the Lens' ring and the R lacks a dedicated joy stick), but the R5 offers less buttons. And those 5 buttons on this Wheel" are very intuitive to feel and remember. The R7 offers all in this tiny body! I haven't used the joystick within the wheel, but this seems to be a nice new approach to use the real estate beside the big screen. Due to me primarily shooting BB-AF the AF-MF switch at the body is not so much of an add on, but this is great thinking about lenses like the 50 1.8 or the 16 2.8 The body might be on the small side for my hands. I had once the hands on a R3, oh boy this biest is great in the hand, better than any other camera I touched. But I did not order it up to now, the 24 MPX at this price point are holding me back. Thank you for your vid!

Hi Martyn, That's very lucky indeed! That's a nice amount of time to spend in a wonderful location! How did you find the R7 with the Red Squirrels, I'm certainly interested as I imagine you were shooting in low light and at high ISO, I only tested the R7 in low light briefly yesterday and it was quite noisy but I was at f7.1 and really quite high ISO so can't expect miracles, I was pushing it intentionally though, lol.. I'm hoping to do a video on the Rf 800 f/11, I've had it for over 6 months now and mainly use it for video hence the purchase, saying that in the right light it produces nice clean sharp images, and for f11 a pretty good bokeh all things considered. My pleasure as always and thanks again for watching. Cheers R😀

I bought mine as a back up to my R5 for a big trip coming up. Pros - the weight. Super light but less well balanced with the 100-500. Pleased with the high ISO performance. Shots at 12800 are fine if properly exposed. Price point - attractive. Reach - yes the crop sensor is nice to have for small birds. Cons: ergonomics suck. Trying to get so much into a small package. Switching between R5 and R7 needs getting used to. I find the AF less reliable but I may need to change the customised settings. It’s slightly small for my hands (I’m 6’ 3”). But on balance, as a back up body or as an alternative to those who don’t need something heavier and pricier this is a decent package. Question on FV. I tried this but it keeps jumping back to auto so I’ve gone back to fully manual. What have I got wrong? Thanks.

Hi Andrew, the ergonomics are hard to get to grips with at first but coming from the R3, DX II & III, I found in time my muscle memory took to it straight away, I have small hands which may help. I am waiting for mine to be delivered. I'm in the second batch of customers who pre ordered the R7 with my chosen retailer to be taking delivery any day soon. I have been waiting for a mirrorless body like the R7 for over 4-5 years now and finally it's here. My go to lenses are the Canon F4 300mm L and the mk2 100 - 400mm L lens, plus the 1.4 mkiii converter. I'm currently using the 90D and it is a great camera, love the additional battery grip for the extra hand holding and battery, but can easily do without the weight. I have been watching countless in-depth reviews and I guess it's Marmite, you either love it or hate it. Horse's for courses. I'm hoping that it will be a keeper but I'll be keeping my 90D as a backup just in case. I'm a big fan of the 1.6 crop sensor, but if this isn't going to work I may have to look towards the R5 or something similar FF 🤞 Thanks for posting. Shooting 32,000 ISO and above needs noise reduction software but I am more than happy with the images. I've still got to test it for BIF's and Low Light but I am sure for BIF's it will be fine, where as Low light it will let the side down but you can't have it all. Thanks again R 👍

  • @RichardBirchett

    @RichardBirchett

    Жыл бұрын

Hi Peter, If I am shooting birds moving at speed like a Kingfisher diving I generally switch to Mechanical Shutter to reduce the rolling shutter. On the R3 the rolling shutter is much less due to the newly-developed back-illuminated stacked sensor. On the R7 and possibly on the R5 this is more obvious. I get a bit on my 1DX Mk III when using electronic/Mechanical shutter. I hope that helps? Also good to disable auto correction on the R7 as that produces quite odd results when fast moving subjects are captured. Cheers Richard

Just 2 years ago, I was somehow confidently using a bridge camera, the Canon SX60HS, and then I upgraded to a Canon 100D with the kit lens and a 55 - 250mm lens. I was happy! Now I have a holiday job and have been able to afford both a Canon R7 and last year a Canon EF 100-400 mk ii. I am very happy with this setup (will confirm when I get it haha), and I will be for a while, especially considering my last cameras! I've gotten some amazing pics with my last cameras, all things considering, and every time I see people disappointed with the camera, they are comparing it to an R5 or R3. It will be a big upgrade for me and at least I know I dont need a super expensive camera to take good pics already😊. Hey Richard, I've been using the R7 for 2 months now. In the beginning I regularly thought off returning it, but eventually it grew on me. I have hardly used my 5DIV nor my 7DII since. Only the 5DIV goes with me when I know I will be in a dark situation like the upcoming deer rut. (Altough I will then miss the silent shutter) The R7 is not perfect, but you can buy 4 R7's for 1 R3, so I'll take the inferior weathersealing. 😉 The warping off wings is true with fast birds like swallows, certainly when auto-levelling is active (so turn it off). The shuttershock with mechanical is no issue in my mind, we use slow shutterspeeds in wildlifephotography for non moving subjects so then electronic shutter does the job silently. What I did find a big pain is the freezing up off the AF on my 500mm F4II, this happens regularly when walking around. I then need to turn it off and on again for the AF to work. It could only be my specific camera or lens so let me know if you also encounter this issue with your 500mm f4II greetings from Antwerp 👋👌

First thing I did is turn off auto levelling, can't have the warpy effect ruining the shot, lol.. I've not even tried the mechanical yet, might give that a go😂! Only solution: go back in photo mode, press once the AF button, change back to video mode and it works as intended. The AF also begin to work when starting recording (after about a second when the camera realize NOTHING is in focus!), but somehow the camere refuse to use any AF function, not sure if its a bug in the firmware, but it must be since it happens at RF 800, EF 100-400, basically on all my lenses.

The R7 is a great camera for the money and the AF is far superior than the 7D2, but does it take better pictures?? Probably not, it really all depends what you want to use it for. If I had the choice I'd go for the R7 every time, but if money is an issue then the 7D2 is a brilliant camera with loads going for it and won't let you down. The R7 has it's limitations especially in low light and the buffer gets filled quickly even shooting CRAW but I love it. I hope that's helped a bit. @@RichardBirchett . Private lake ... you were at then . As for the R7 I can't see myself buying one . not enough affordable lenses as not that rich lol .Though the RF800 Budget priced lense did make me rethink my decision .. in the end am happy with what i have already have C850D/90D .

Yes that’s right, private so not really setup for the wildlife photographer but great to have access. I’ve got the RF 800 f/11 which isn’t bad considering it’s f/11!! Purchased it for video which works really well, and takes good stills in good light, not so good in low light, lol.. sounds like your setup works for you which is good. Is a shame about the 3rd party lens situation! Thanks again R

Too small physically, no battery grip, no support for 3rd party lenses, new RF 100 -500 is physically too small, external zoom , ugly small lens hood 500 just isn't long enough and it's too expensive. Why have canon made so many mistakes with this combo. So frustrating. Best option now we have no 3rd party lens support and the sigma has terrible pulsing issues is the Sony 200-600 but even that has the problem with Sony not making a decent apsc cameram These camera companies know what we want but they simply will not make it.

Hi Paul, it was such a shame and a bad decision by Canon to not allow 3rd party lenses, and agree about the pulsing issues and have heard this can be a big problem. As always they never listen, this combo works well for me and I find it a great on the go outfit to use, although an added grip would have been nice. Thanks for watching and sharing your view. Cheers Rich👍

Canon dropped the ball with the R7, the electronic rolling shutter is horrible and the mechanical shutter sounds like a .50 caliber machine gun, guaranteed to scare the birds away.

@RichardBirchett I was really hanging for it's release and then......... I've got a 90D and the sensor is fantastic. Not having a battery grip was the final deal breaker for me and the R7.
