    What’s a sheer line?

It's a line of balance on the side of the canoe / boat. Imagine trying to push the canoe over from it's side while on water - for as long as the water is below that line, the canoe is going to bounce back once you let it go. However if you push it over that line, the center of mass ends up being on the other side and the canoe is going to flip over.

You are not going to run class 4 or 5 white water with an open canoe.
