Canned Heat helped revive Blues greats like Gatemouth, John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins and several more. Hite was a Blues Aficionado as was Vestine, They searched the country side for blues albums and players. Bob had a massive record collection that would humble the best of them. I had the great fortune to catch Gate perform and during one of his shows he was on a break and just hanging out in the hallway of the college he was playing at, all by himself, so i said," what the hell i'm a fan, a harp player and blues lover, I have to talk to him!". So i just walked up to him and said hi, how's the show going tonight? Well we talked for 15 minutes and he was the most humble, supportive, and kindest person. He finally looked up at his watch and said, whoa, i have to get back on stage. He signed a poster i had pulled off the wall and said thanks for coming to the show. He played mandolin, guitar and harp that night. Such a wonderful memory in my life.

I had the honor to get to know Gate from the mid 80' till he passed. He always told me he thought music could heal and bring people together unlike anything else. He let me walk Him out on stage on his last New York gig at BB King's place and told the crowd how much He appreciated me driving from North Carolina to be with Him. I have never been so honored. He will always be The Man!!

Poor Canned Heat. So good of them to use their fame to bring an American great to us all. Poor Gate was not used to having to actually wave off a Blues pickup band. :) But they followed despite their massive fame at that time. As good as the music is? Half of Gate's magic was in the audience's relationship. Which is not here in this video. Lord, I do miss him.

I never got to play with Gatemouth Brown. But my relationship with Canned Heat goes back to 1967 when I bought the orange album, with Al Wilson. I took classmates to the Cafe Au Gogo in 1968 to hear them live, after our graduation party. After Al died my relationship was discontinued until 1974, when I was working at a masonry-supply company, and by mere coincidence one of the contractors I sometimes serviced was Al Wilson's father, a mason in Belmont, Mass. We didn't talk much about Al, because he was taking the reported suicide very hard. In 1985-6, when Henry Vestine came to Eugene Oregon where I was getting my BA at U-Oregon. When Henry wasn't away with the Heat, he was playing in my band, Church of the Blues. He was even my roommate for several months. Once I graduated, I never saw Henry again, and he died in 1997. By 2006, I had my MA from Oklahoma State, and had "graduated" from 17 years of truck driving. My band, The Workers, was booked as co-headliner with Canned Heat, which by that time contained only Fito de la Parra, the drummer, from the original Heat, at a small winery-- "Soaring Wings"-- in Springfield Nebraska. It was May 6, but the weather was so bad, everyone went home except maybe a hundred or so people inside the winery. We played, and then Canned Heat played. And finally, 39 years after I got that pivotal LP, I got to play with Canned Heat. The next day, Fito even found me a joint! Only de la Parra, whose book chronicles the life of Canned Heat, survives today. I'm Watermelon Slim, and you can get my CDs and DVDs at www.watermelonslim- dot-com.

I played this video for my precious grand boys other day, 3 yrs old & 1 & half, and 3 yr old started shaking it & boogie down just like Clarence is getting down... Then the baby started to act like he was playin the harmonica and stomping his lil foot to every beat... I WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZED AT HOW MUCH THEY LOVED THE MUSIC!!! so now I'm gonna go n get both of them instruments this weekend so they can play whenever they want to at Memaws house.

RIP Gate. Got to see you twice. Stunned both times at your versatility. Thanks.

I guarantee you ruffed the feathers of more than a few Canned Heat faithful. There are legions of us. They are way more than a "white" backing band. Don't forget to boogie. old guy
