I jammed with Gatemouth in Monroe, La back in the early 70’s. What a great guy he was. I was just blown away by his guitar technique as were the other guys there. He hung around for a long time afterwards showing us wannabe guitar players licks and answering questions. One of the fondest memories of my 79 years.

great story - great artist - wish they had more of him on this channel. I have him on several iTunes.

I saw him in a little bar in San Antone during a thunderstorm that was so bad nobody came out. So I grabbed a chair, took it across the empty dance floor to the foot of the stage a few feet from where he was sitting and playing and I pretty much got a personal performance from 5 feet away. I regret that there couldn’t have been a larger crowd to appreciate him, but what a memory for me. I will never forget it. He was amazing.

Gatemouth was a truly great guitar player, and multi instrumentalist, who was somewhat unknown in mainstream America, and passed on too soon. RIP Gate playing in the angel band

One of the best nights of this old man's life! My ex-wife and I witnessed Gatemouth demonstrate his amazing ability to pull a crowd INTO HIS WORLD with his awesome and unique musical talents. The year was 1981 and the venue was the Whiskey River located on Grenville Ave. in Dallas, Tx. Absolutely one of the GREATS. He was not only a master on the guitar but played the mouth harp and a fiddle in his own unique style. Damn, this man could sure play some wicked blues on his fiddle.

This song was written by Clifford Scott. I was a little drunk at Fiesta San Antonio and he was on staggered playing. I asked during a break if he knew Cockroach Blues by Albert Lee. He said yes,do you? He asked if I would like to come on stage and sing it. What a gentleman and what a memory. I did my best and everybody seemed to love it. Fun

James bueker This song was written by Bill Doggett, Billy butler & Clifford Scott a another guy in 1956, I was 13 years old, that honky-tonk beat is behind thousands of songs

Gate was like a chameleon . He could play anything. Big Band, Swing, Texas Swing Blues, Country. Played some cool stuff on the fiddle, too. Sad to see him go. We're losing all the great old performers and they're not being replaced with greater talent, that's for sure.

Yes, and the lack of good replacements is so sad. I wish more people had really wanted to learn and learn from all of the greats while they were here. Virtuosos don't come along all that often. People need to learn.

Met Clarence at a little honky tonk back in the 70's. Nicest guy you'll ever meet...and he sure can play!

I saw this great man and underground Atlanta and was privileged to stay after hours. He did a fantastic show after closing he sit down at the bar, ate his dinner on a tin plate just like you and me he’s truly magical.

That entire band is solid as a rock.. I love how he sits back and let the band do their thing..

Clarence is awesome! He's the Texas Blues equivalent of Wes Montgomery!

Love it. That's my late friend Dennis Taylor on sax with the red shirt. When he wasn't touring he'd come and play with our little local blues band in Boston way back in the 80s. RIP Dennis and Gatemouth.

Hey Hal - don't know ya, but we got something in common with Dennis "Two N" Taylor from Barton, VT. He was too good to be workin' up here and went to Beantown and then Gate and others. He sat in with my late 70's band, The Slant Six Revue, as well as 80's band The Throbulators up here in VT. Great cat an' a helluva player. I'm with ya - RIP Dennis and Gate.

What a genius that is some soul sound from the man. Can definitely show the young ones of today how to play with his toes. God rest his soul. RIP blues man.

Saw him in Cleveland Ohio a few years before he passed. What a great show.

Gatemouth was the definition of a class act. Used to play at the Stanhope House in NJ. He was something very special!

I used smoke Hippie hay on Chimes Street with Clarence.That is next to LSU campus .Never knew he was famous.Untill I saw him on TV. What a cool man.Heads up!!! If he had his tobacco pipe in his mouth.It was cherry tobacco and weed.He said you cannot smell the Weed in the pipe if ya got cherry tobacco in the pipe. he grew good smoke!!!!

Holy Cow! Gate mouth talk to that guitar!! Luckiest child in the world got to listen to this as a child, no wonder I love music!

I introduced the Eric Dimmer the lead Sax player to Gate in Houston, Tx. at the Black Forest in 1991 and he put him to work. Gate let me front and play Harmonica with his band when in town he was so Gracious. Eric and I played together on the Houston scene in those days. I worked with T.C. and the Cannonballs, People with Hands, did some shows with Albert Collins and sat in with Willie Nelson, while living in Tx those were epic adventures. R. I. P. Great Master of Music, Clarence ( Gatemouth) Brown.

My best friend and I took his mom and dad to see B.B. King and Gatemouth at Interlochen Academy here in Michigan. This was back mid 90s, B.B.Kings 70th Birthday. Fricken awsome!

Yep at Stubbs on East Broadway. Gone now, so is Earl "Stubbs" Stubblefield but his kids carry on in Austin

His style caught my ear in the 80s. He was the gateway that got me into jazz. Back then it was Sabbath & AC/DC all the way, until I heard him.

I'm 64 and only discovered Gatemouth recently and love his music, I wished MTV would have featured artist like Gatemouth way back when because I would have listened to it. Life is a new adventure with KZread when I discover new but old artists from my generation. The music was so much better then, no rap crap like you have today!

I caught Gate at a little dive bar on Speedway Ave in Tuscon in the late '80s. I almost cried when he did "Take the A Train". We miss you Clarence.

From the Stones, to ZZ Top and many of the best bands in between … I saw Gatemouth and Orchestra at a Gulfport, Ms Holiday Inn back around 81. The best concert and performance I've ever seen !! RIP Mr. Brown.

One of the best guitarists I'VE ever heard.

I went down to San Antonio to hear him at a Country Club. I was a musician in Fort Worth and we loved Gatemouth. We played Okie Dokey Stomp all the time in Fort Worth. They are playing Johnny's Playhouse in this recording.

A lot of people don't know Gate was a Grammy winning fiddle player too!!!

Saw the late Gatemouth Brown in Shreveport during my senior year of High school in Shreveport in '82. I told him I was from Beaumont and he smiled and replied that he was from Orange! What a musician!

I had the privilege of meeting Gate, literally in my driveway in the 90's WHENI lived in Manchester,Ct. Good friends of Gates were my next door neighbors. They made sure to call me to meet him bc I was just getting into playing guitar. I was so nervous I was shaking. He had told me to keep an eye out for his daughter bc she was a up an coming singer,songwriter. Sadly I don't know if she made it in the business. We also talked about BB KING, and a few other things. I will never forget that day!

There really is. I honestly forgot about Gatemouth til I recently started rediscovering artists. Such an unrecognized talent. Shout out to Rory Gallagher and Roy Buchanan, two of my favorite guitarists that are always overlooked.

I saw gatemouth play live several times.the guy was phenomenal. Absolutely one of the best.i thought I was a pretty good hotshot guitar player but after seeing clarence I knew I still had alot to learn.

I came down with The Salvation Army after Katrina over Christmas. When you see it on tv and then actually see it in person, it's a whole difference experience. We worked in the warehouse in Biloxi. Handed out lots of stuff.

Many years ago I saw Clarence Gatemouth at La Boite, a pub that no longer exist in Barcelona, Catalonia: although the crowd in that small place, the show was incredible!

Gatemouth settled on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain later in life & spent a lot of time playing clubs in Orleans, St. Tammany, the casinos on the coast. The grocery I worked over night in in Slidell, La was open 24 hrs. before Katrina. Gatemouth had a 60's model Cadillac limo, and a white boy driver late 20's or early 30's. They used to leave his gigs at 2:30 to 3:00, on weekends, & always ended up in our store. He lived in Pirates Harbor near the Rigolets of Lake Pontchartrain. Katrina destroyed his home & he never recovered. He died within a year of that. A fine old man. I hated to see him go. Check him out playing with Roy Clark back in the 70's on KZread.

Interesting story. My girlfriend passed away a year ago and her family was from Mandeville. So I have visited there frequently. 20 years ago or so I wondered into a small jazz club in Knoxville Tennessee. Gatemouth was playing and I was immediately moved by his lyrical style. I hope he made a comfortable living throughout his career as he deserved it.

I'm 67 and from New Orleans and can remember him having steady gigs at some of the better music clubs on Bourbon Street. Since I was 11 or 12, we always snuck to the French Quarter to walk down Bourbon Street and while we were trying to see into the strip clubs we could hear him playing in the music club with his name and picture lit up on the marquee. I saw him several times years later at the House of Blues in New Orleans and he was great. He always mentioned that he wasn't a bluesman but he was an entertainer and he didn't always play the blues but he always put on a great show. And he always wore that outfit. I'll miss him.

I had his grand kids in Oklahoma City Schools, knew his son Dwayne (not sure if he is still with us). Did a wikipedia search and found the family information. This just happened to appear on my you tube list ! ? ! wow.

Fantastic performance by everybody. Great sax solo.

That's my old homeboy Harold Floyd on bass, originally from the Mobile Alabama area. Growing up in the late 60's, early 70's Harold was in many influential local bands in Mobile. During the Vietnam war, 1969, Harold was drafted and we drove in my car to Kentucky to pick him up when he was on leave. Listened to the Beatles all the way back to Mobile. I'd love to know if he's still around and where. He was always a fabulous bass player and was a tremendous asset to Gatemouth as he aged and became more infirm.

Seen em tons of times...what a MONSTER musician & showman, y'all‼️ One of the last times, I was at New Orleans Jazzfest, Gate was talking with with the desk guy at Louisiana Music Factory.

Without Clarence there could never have been a Stevie Ray. ..... LEGENDARY Blues MASTER!

We love this stuff, Hi there Henry Wilson here from Clitheroe Lancashire England.

I was doing a Saturday mid-day DJ shift on a radio station down in the 4 Corners area in 1976, when I heard a knock on the door. When I finally was able to answer it, the man there introduced himself as Gatemouth Brown. Luckily I had heard of him and had even seen his picture somewhere so I knew it was him. We sat and visited for about an hour. It was one of those conversations that seem to have a life of their own, what a thrill it was. About 25 years later I saw him in concert and he more than lived up to his reputation. We visited for about a minute after the show and I even scored an autographed poster. To show his street creds, he recorded LP's with Roy Clark for C&W and Eric Clapton on the blues side. A true giant.

I should really sell all my guitars! This is what real talent looks like!

I didn't know this video existed. Thanks SBMteam for noticing the dbl C's. It brings back some great some memories. You will not believe the pre-show story with this gig! Another time maybe. Dennis and I were no longer playing full time with Gate. They flew us in for the show. What a night! Unfortunately Dennis and Gate are no longer with us. RIP mis amigos.

I tried to never pass up a chance to see Gatemouth when he came thru DFW. I first saw him when & was 23. I probably caught close to 15 of his shows before he died. I got to talk with him several times.

I did FOH sound for Gatemouth at least 4 times that I can remember. He always was easy to make his band sound great. He always had top notch musicians. I do remember this drummer in this video.

This stuff is so good. Every note counts.

Johnny Winter and Gatemouth are both from the Golden Triangle in Texas and its notable that they both use a similar multi finger picking style. I grew up around them and was fortunate enough to see them both a few times. Thanks for posting this video. BTW, Gatemouth's guitar is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You see it when you first go in.

The guitar of Gate’s in the R&RHOF was just one of his, a big body blonde electric Gibson is on display. It is on display along side the guitars of many other great blues players at the Hall. He loved playing his Gibson Firebird for many years. Gate is buried in Orange, Texas at the Hollywood Cemetery.

Gate’s grave is the only one I know of with a State of Texas Historical marker at the foot of his grave. Special recognition for someone of Gate’s stature and I am glad he is remembered this way, he was one-of-a-kind and an excellent representative for the State of Texas. His brother Bobby, still lives in Orange, TX.
