I didn't realize that Alan Wilson was a member of the "27" club. He died 2 weeks before Jimi and 4 weeks before Joplin. What a cool haunting voice he left us.

Al Wilson was pure genius... musically, intelligence and as with most gifted people, introverted and socially awkward. Reminds me a lot of Sid of Pink Floyd. God puts these extraordinarily gifted people in front of us to enjoy for only a short time ... so enjoy their greatness.

I worked at a McDonalds in the San Fernando Valley in 1967-68 and they would come in (before they were famous) and eat burgers inside the enclosure where they ordered instead of eating outside at a table (no inside seating yet at McD's at that time) They had a VW bus and had the cover of their first album taped in the window as an advertisement Later I met one of them at AA meeting in West LA and Bear would sometimes sing at the Topanga Corral where I used to go before sobriety, but I was never there when he was Great group and great sound

LYRICS: Well, I'm so tired of crying But I'm out on the road again I'm on the road again Well, I'm so tired of crying But I'm out on the road again I'm on the road again I ain't got no woman Just to call my special friend You know the first time I traveled Out in the rain and snow In the rain and snow You know the first time I traveled Out in the rain and snow In the rain and snow I didn't have no payroll Not even no place to go And my dear mother left me When I was quite young When I was quite young And my dear mother left me When I was quite young When I was quite young She said, "Lord, have mercy On my wicked son." Take a hint from me, mama Please don't you cry no more Don't you cry no more Take a hint from me, mama Please don't you cry no more Don't you cry no more 'Cause it's soon one morning Down the road I'm going But I ain't going down That long old lonesome road All by myself But I ain't going down That long old lonesome road All by myself I can't carry you, baby Gonna carry somebody else

This song is Alan Wilson at his best- a few years before madness planted its flag in Wilson`s great mind. As Hooker said, Wilson was one of the great harp players-right there with Little Walter. The tembura-with its mysticism-was Alan`s idea. And the vocals-pure Skip James. Hite, Vestine, Taylor and Fito were talented .But Wilson was in a class of his own-an example of Schopenhauer`s dictum: "Genius and madness are sure near allied-and thin is the partition that between them does divide."

Never forget walking into a mammoth, darkened cave-like bar in Boulder with friends in '68 after traveling from western PA to bring a bud who'd transferred to U of Colorado back east for Christmas break, and this Canned Heat classic was reverberating off the rock walls adding the mellowest touch to the coolest place i"d ever seen before or since.

When my friends and I first heard this back in the 60's we laughed because it was so different especially the vocals. It sounded like he was singing out of tune, like they picked somebody off the street to sing this song. It sounded great! I always picture a train engine when I hear the beginning and the end of the song, that drone sound. When I hear this tune now I'm amazed at how good it is.

Thanks Haake for posting the whole song, the extended solo is oft left out. This version if you know nothing of Alan is the epitome of blues harp. Yes they had to double, triple etc. the harpsichord sound but the harp is so rich. And his vocals live on in commercials, on the radio an in our heads still to this day. The real deal!
