Candlepin Bowling - Jim Powers vs. Steve Vadney (Higher Quality)

(Re-uploaded in higher quality and in HD. Thanks to Scott Rondelli for providing this tape which was in better quality than the original upload I had posted back in 2019. You can still view that here if you want to: • Candlepin Bowling - Ji... ) Air date: 3/14/1992. This was the third week of Steve Vadney's run on Channel 5 in early 1992, featuring himself taking on Jim Powers. Steve had rolled a very nice 411 triple the week before, but wanted to better that on this show and certainly put on a GREAT performance that led him to do just that. UNFORTUNATELY, it all pretty much meant nothing in the end, as his very high scoring in this show only got him the 6th place alternate position for the True Value Championship show that year, which was ultimately won by Paul Berger.
Either way, this match is a great one overall and hope you enjoy :)

Steve is such a nice guy, I used to keep score for him from time to time when he bowled on the same leagues as my dad.

I'm always impressed with Steve's performances. He's one of the most fundamentally sound candlepin bowlers of all time.

That 1992 championship show was an absolute monster to get into. Paul Berger had that 500 and Tom Olszta was in the 460 range as well (I want to say it was a 463) for second place, and neither of them had posted those scores yet when this show aired.

It's amazing when you look at it from face value, just considering that the AVERAGE triple to make the Championship show in 1992 was a 459!!!! (Broken down like this, Paul Berger's 500, Tom Olszta's 469, Peter Surette's 453, Jack Quinn's 437, and Tom O'Brien's 436. 2295 pins total divided by 5 bowlers, basically needing a 153 average for 15 games straight!) And if you throw in Steve Vadney as the alternate, it still comes out to a 454 average triple for the 6 bowlers!!! No other Championship show even came close to this stat, though the year before in 1991 was right up there with roughly a 445 average triple to make the show, and 1984 is I think the closest to 1992, with the bowlers averaging just under a 447 triple to make that show.
