Cancelled - The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien

Ойын-сауық

In 2009 and 2010, NBC provoked and encountered one of the most embarrassing television cancellations in history. What started the iconic and infamous "Late Night Wars" and permanently stained the reputation of Jay Leno. This is that story.

@@CharlesGoonan No, blame NBC. All Conan did was say he was going to move on to a better opportunity at another network at a certain point. Who can blame him for that? NBC greedily wanted to keep both Conan and Jay, so they pretty much forced the 5 year deal thing. Jay did lie about it publicly and say he cool with it. Conan skipped his other opportunities for this promise NBC gave him. Then Leno never really came out and said he was forced into this decision when the whole Conan debacle happened. It wasn't until AFTER he was gone that he finally admitted he was never OK with leaving. This was a really bad look on Leno and he should not have come back but ultimately, NBC is the main villain here.

I honestly don’t hate Fallon. I think his “game show” stuff with celebrities can be pretty fun to watch. As for interviews themselves, I think Conan does better. What sets Conan apart, and I’m sure many will agree, is his best stuff is his remotes. Conan does not need anyone else to be funny, many of us would watch a show if it was just Conan and no one else. Not many other hosts can claim that honor.

DMbatman K, first off, don't insult people if you want to make a point You will not be taken seriously Secondly, the laughter in Feel Good Inc, a song about the happiness industry, is there to illustrate society forcing us to be happy all the time Fallon's show reeks of the happiness industry. All of it is too safe and clean, with fake laughter and Common doing happy raps My comment compared Feel Good Inc's message with Fallon's tendency to laugh when the jokes aren't all that funny Not to mention that Fallon himself is an alcoholic. This is probably because he pushes his negative impulses away with alcohol, which is not healthy

  • @mistergrieves

You guys are talking like there are dozens of nightly late show hosts. There are six. Not sure what you mean by "politically correct." It's a phrase thrown around by social conservatives whenever anyone says shit like, "Confederates were racist traitors and all their statues should be razed." That's Colbert's monologue every night. All the other hosts are tame by comparison. Jimmy Kimmel isn't as flamboyant as Colbert but he's smart and his humor is relatively subversive. Seth Meyers is also really sharp. His show is smaller because it's on even later and not meant to be big and flashy.

I remember when this happened. What NBC did to Conan was disgraceful and Leno made no effort to stand up for what was right. Ideally, Leno should have just retired in 2009, like he had said he would, and gracefully handed the show over. By creating The Jay Leno Show at 10pm, he basically sabotaged Conan's ratings and it just felt like he had kept his show but moved it to a new timeslot. I can understand that maybe he did this not fully realizing the consequence it would have. However, once he saw that the timeslot wasn't working and that NBC was going to push Conan out, that was the time to show some class and bow out gracefully. Instead he went back to the Tonight Show, acted like Conan never existed, and never even acknowledged the guy.

Edward, he may have regained #1 in the ratings, but it still showed lack of class that he did what he did without at least acknowledging Conan or apologizing to him, or even just openly admitting that he had gone back on his word regarding retiring. Conan's Tonight Show may have resurged to #1 if it had been given more time to develop and if the creation of The Jay Leno Show right in front of it hadn't sabotaged it.

Actually, Jay's "retirement" was something NBC forced on him after Conan agreed to stick with the network in exchange for Jay's job. And after being blindsided like that Jay could've complained Letterman-style, but this wasn't going to reverse the network's decision. So, Jay handed "The Tonight Show" over to Conan. However, when ABC invited Jay to come over there, NBC feared he'd take his audience with him, and only then did they sell him on the idea of a 10pm show. Of course that show bombed, but when Jay asked if he could be released from his contract, NBC told him they were going to hold him to it. So Jay could not just bow out. And pushing Conan out was not NBC's wish. They wanted Conan to continue as host "The Tonight Show", but he resigned over the time bump issue. And why should Jay not have returned to the job Conan had a hand in taking from him in the first place?

Letterman lost my respect when he invited Rush Limbaugh on his show, then proceeded to insult the man right to his face in front of a national audience. Regardless of your politics, the LEAST a late night talk show host can be is civil to his guests. He tried to make of fool out of the late Justin Wilson in the same manner, but that old Cajun was wise to him and was able to give as good as he got. Letterman also stayed on TV way past his prime, so it was no surprise that despite Leno's underhanded reclaiming of The Tonight Show, by virtue of being polite to all his guests and keeping his humor fresh, he was always besting Letterman in the ratings, right up to the end.

Conan's ratings didn't even come close to Leno's so THAT'S why NBC pulled the plug. And no, that's not the only thing people remember Leno by. He's known (and still actively famous) for Jay Leno's Garage on CNBC and the FREE, high quality features he does on different cars every week here on KZread. Apart from all of that, he still tours and does stand up across the country when he's not doing interviews and guest appearances. The only people that really remember this and are still bitter about it are salty Conan fans that you'll never be able to please anyway. JAY was the one that got put in a bad spot. He was obedient to the network that gave him his career because Conan's ratings bombed and now his reputation sucks with Conan fans so it doesn't really matter anyway.

The Tonight Show died with Conan's departure. And with it all it's attempts to be actually funny. Jimmy Fallon seems to be a nice guy. But his show is nothing less than a abortion. I always feel like I'm watching a family at Chucky Cheese on that show. Seeing celebrities shoot hoops or some other contest tacky shit. Conan was and has always been original. The ratings might not be the same but that's a no brainier since he's on cable and network.

In Australia, we only got David Letterman on TV here so I never saw Jay Leno or Conan O'Brien until much later. I've seen and enjoyed Conan very much, Jay on the other hand just doesn't connect with me like the others did and as for Fallon, he has got to be the worst late night host I've ever seen. He just comes across as so forced and fake, I'd love to see someone like Paul F. Tompkins host, he's hilarious!

Jay Leno is actually a very funny comedian. But, on the Tonight Show he was about as funny as taxes or cancer. He had no right to take Conan's time slot and he had no right to take the Tonight Show back from him. Conan had worked to become the host of that show his entire life and it's stolen from him in just under 7 months. Outrageous, this still pisses me off to this day.

Taking "The Tonight Show" time slot was not Jay's idea. When *NBC* proposed that move to Jay, he asked if they would release him from his contract. *NBC* said no, so he couldn't just walk away. And Jay never would've gotten "The Tonight Show" back if Conan hadn't resigned. The blame for that mess goes to *NBC.*

1: Leno was funny 2: Conan on late night was funnier 3: NBC are douchebags for not letting him unleash the full power of Flaming C and taming him, look up any of his original Late Night Show skits and compare with Leno in his prime 4: Leno lost respect for jumping back into a war that never should've happened so it doesn't matter if he's genuinely funny, all you see is a backstabber so you can't laugh at that man anymore like before 5: Moved the Tonight Show to 12:05 pm to accommodate the older crowd instead of embracing change like everything else in this world with a real shot like a full two years to win over the public 6: The reason Conan was scrubbed from NBC back then because they fired him and put him on a farewell tour basically for the last 2 months and it was his best ratings because he said "Fuck NBC, I got 2 months of airtime left to do what I always wanted to do", that's when he unleashed the Late Night writers room on the Tonight Show and also called in favors from guests over the years to really stick it to NBC near the end to let them know what they just gave up so no wonder those NBC executives were fired after he finally owned the show and still was let go! That's right, Conan succeeded in the end by sparking a new audience for the show after Leno's incredible run but they still fired him, this was also why Leno couldn't come back to his prime, Conan groomed the audience into something wackier so when Leno left, Fallon filled that Conan void so Conan is the reason now we like The Tonight Show because of the last 2 months where Conan owned, NBC and FOX owes a lot of credit to this man who is always greatly overlooked(best Simpsons seasons arguably), most people just see him as a clown until he stops clowning and focuses his powers and creates something magical! Don't let somebody's unpopular opinion help you overlook greatness, yeah he has a lot of throw away jokes but he's definitely a genius at work who also deserves everyone's full respect for what he's done for television comedy in the last nearly 30 years

But Fallon got ratings that Conan's "Tonight Show" never did. And you have to remember that when all this was going on, America was in the grips of a major recession. And as NBC was not enjoying much ratings success in prime time either, they may simply not have been financially able to grant Conan two years to gain the kind of audience size that "The Tonight Show" enjoyed with Jay Leno.

Conan had a college kid audience, Leno had their parents. I don't think the execs really paid attention to the differences between these 2 men. If they didn't want an immature acting, goofy, comedian who'd be telling his jokes to 50 somethings they prolly shouldn't of singed the deal in 5 years you got it. Clearly it was greed and when it didn't work for them, it was basically "fuck you Connan, too bad hahahaha."
