It’s Riqa! A cancelled 3rd person shooter for the Nintendo 64. Developed by Bits Studios, Riqa was briefly mentioned in the gaming press, being touted as Tomb Raider for the N64 due to its female protagonist and 3rd person perspective. As it turns out though, the game actually had 3 playable characters: Riqa, Tak, and Kane. Riqa was recently released online by former Bits Studios team member Ten Shu.

The "anime-inspired western action game from the late 90s to the early 2000s" has gotta be my favourite genre (it gave me 2 of my faves: Shogo and Oni), so the fact that this was cancelled makes me extra sad.

It was briefly mentioned in an article in N64Gamer (Aus Magazine ) from an Expo presentation alongside other games showcased. That is the only mention of it I remember as a kid.
This game looks like it had so much style
this feels like it woulda been a cult hit on N64. which is why I also guess why it was better off not gettin released because that doesnt feel like it would've been the most profitable outcome
I can see myself really liking this game as a kid back in the early 2000s. I wish I could help this game be finished out. Maybe there is already some N64 modders working into it.
It would be a Public Service if this game was completely reverse engineered.

I played the leak and it's a decent game. It's no tomb raider though. The people who keep making the comparison obviously never played tomb raider.
@ZachAttackIsBack
13 күн бұрын
Well, it is unfinished, so not a fair comparison.
@Tall_Order
13 күн бұрын
@@ZachAttackIsBack True, but the main reason the comparison doesn't make sense is that riqa is a completely different genre than Tomb Raider, with different controls. If you played tomb raider, you know it's mostly centered around climbing, solving puzzles, dodging traps, and has tank controls. But Riqa is a runner gunner, with standard controls. I guess people see a female protagonist and immediately compare the two games.
Aesthetically, it reminds me of Tomb Raider, Siphon Filter, and even a little Deus Ex. Also - a Western-developed game going for an anime look like Shogo: Mobile Armor Division (1998) and Oni (2001). A product of its time in the best way!
This is absolutely amazing! I think it would be awesome if someone finished the game. Hard4Games is just such a special channel and I love you guys.
This is so cool.. There are a handful of cancelled games that I wish made their way online for the public to enjoy. Whatever content is actually playable, that is.
"mom can we buy Jet Force Gemini?" "no you have Jet Force Gemini at home" 🤣 still cool you preserved it though!
"Fighting force 2" for Sony PlayStation and Sega Dreamcast is very close to this game's concept. It even has a first-person shooting system.
Any canceled N64 game is sad to see because this system could have use it.
I totally would have bought this had it been released back in the day.
This game looks like it would have been so much fun. Glad to see this got recovered.
Cool that the game have masamune shirou art and designs, for anyone interested, the guy still working to this day doing manga
I'd really love to hear the entire track that plays at 6:33 and the rest of the soundtrack. The environments look great too; it really captures the charm of that era. Had it been released and I knew about this I might have played it back then, but I would have for sure today. Thanks for the upload!
Love how the main girl's face looks like a Ghost in The Shell manga trace-over and blue-hair dude looks like a DragonBall + something else manga trace-over. The other girl looks really familiar but I can't place it!

Lots of similarities, but I don't know why, maybe the common libraries that came with the n64 dev kits, or copy cat design? Stair ramps look like Ocarina, Aiming looks like Perfect Dark... jumping like Tomb Raider?. So many similarities make it look like a high effort asset rip/flip game. Crawling monitor is actually very easy to implement, it's just a scrolling texture often seen with water, doesn't even need animation frames.
I'm glad you chose to run this in upscaled on an emulator. Running games at 320x240 on real hardware looks awful.
@3dmarth
13 күн бұрын
N64 games do look surprisingly clean on a modest-sized CRT, to the point that it's hard to believe they're actually running at 240p. That said, the finer details are still a bit soupy, and I prefer to just play in HD on an emulator. Looks like Riqa could even run at a solid 60fps with the right settings!
Loving that Star Trek phaser sound effect
Looks pretty cool. It think that Masamune Shirow, creator of Ghost in the Shell, did the the main menu art. I dig it!
Wooah! THat looks amazing for an N64 game right down to the last detail. Ever place looks amazing. The models look so pretty and so do their animations. This could have been one the N64's 1995 tech demos.
Some of the element from riqa was incorporated in Rogue Ops.
This game had a sister game called Thieve’s World. Was a stealth based cat burglar game with another leading lady character. Hopefully that’s the next game leaked.
This morphed into Rouge Ops for the Gamecube/PS2/xbox
The art style looks really good on this! Shame this didn't get finished.

Interesting. Conker's Twelve Tails... You're next.
This looks like it could've been rad as hell given some time to polish up the graphics and tune the controls. Reminds me of Oni but without the hand to hand combat options.
Would love to see the ROMS combined into a more completed project. This game looks amazing! Definitely the type of game that was missing from the N64 library back in the day!
Kind of interesting how the in-game models have a darker skin tone when compared to the 2D illustrations. I wonder if this is just a simple design change during development or if there was something else going on, given how tense design choices like this can be.
Great job This looks cool
The design of the menus remind me a lot to Gun Valkyrie on the OG XBOX, sad that RIQA got cancelled
nice work - still waiting on that BETA goldeneye cartridge that "someone" claims to have
Looks like Jet Force Gemini and Perfect Dark had a baby and it just really wanted love and affection but was instead callously disregarded
There is no audio or sound; am I deaf or has my cellphone stopped working properly !? 😮
Wow, I really would have enjoyed this back then. Shame it never came out.
Wow! Looks exactly like a game that I love to play. Is there a finished or near finished build available?

This looks like it would have been awesome! I wish it was finished.
Do we know why they didn't get to finish & release it?
I love those menus! Why does no one make fun menus and title screens anymore?
imo...by the time 3rd parties became familiar with the N64 hardware say in 1999 for release in the following year or so the platform was dying. Many studios moved their projects onto the GCN, but the GameCube had a completely different architectural design philosophy. I'd imagine the same fate RIQA saw was common around the turn of the century.
I bet I would have enjoyed this back in the day had it come out.
I do stumble upon one of the game got thankfully leaked in the gigaleak gameboy lotcheck. In a tweet i saw one of the ex employee Who worked in bloomland Philip Marlowe by quest by the original vision had initialy planning lot of levels but the later got released by cutting the of be streamlined. I talked to him if he had master rom, and sure does but unfortunetly it cant due the scared being layd off or laws nlt sharing cause shaneingan. Is one of those case the devs actualy want preserve is old projects some occasions but they cant due to contracts.
Looks really good for an N64 game. Thanks for sharing!
I think this game would have done well, depending on when it would be released looks cool.
Riqa looks like an interesting game, so I could have definitely seen myself playing it. There is a certain level of charm to it that makes me feel like it could have been a hidden gem on the N64 if it were released.
60 FPS menus, eh? Always nice to see
Anyone know the circumstances on why this was cancelled? How long was it in development?
Cant wait to add this one to the everdrive!
This is really cool. I doubt it would happen but if LRG managed to give this a Shantae Advance-like shot at a second life and to finish developing it, I'd love that.
Honestly Nintendo should've bundled the N64DD with the console at its launch right from the start. It wouldn't have been all that expensive either. No more than say $250 combined the cartridge console itself and the N64DD put together. More than likely 90+% of the games planned for the N64 via the DD would've seen release; including Riqa!
I never heard about this game before, it looks nice, such a shame that it never got finished.
I just hope that panel de pon 64 gets released

Damn, it looks like a real N64 game. You can't recreate this aesthetic from scratch, you had to be there at the time.
Thats a pretty damned good looking game! Its a shame it never came out. I would have been stoked to play something like that on N64.

This looks like it could have been one of the best triple-A games on the system. So sad it was cancelled. :(
